It’s to preserve database calls etc. it’s been suggested before to save an array of info instead. But there was some mention if speed
The reason for this is to protect site content from broken links. All activity is hard coded. So those links get broken.
In reply to: Premium Plugins?There really aren’t that many paid plugins. Many people have created free plugins. Some are great others get abandoned.
In reply to: How to add links, what would be correct code?You wrap your link to admin with a capability check
`if ( current_user_can(‘edit_post’) ) {
Link code here
}
`Cool!
I might have some code that might help, I’ll post later. I was messing with BP external blogs plugin to add the group avatar to activity. Haven’t used it in awhile but I remember it overrides an activity avi per type
In reply to: Display user’s role on the members-loop.php fileDon’t query table, BP and WP has methods to get the info.
plop this inside the members loop:
`<?php
global $members_template;$user_id = $members_template->member->id;
$user = new WP_User($user_id);$role = array_keys($user->wp_capabilities,”1″);
echo ‘User Level: ‘ . $role[0];
?>`In reply to: Extended settingsThanks for the suggestions!
In reply to: Upgrading from 1.2.8 to 1.6.1 via 1.5.6?De activate all plugins and then delete the 1.2 BuddyPress folder. Then upload 1.5 and activate and go through upgrade process. If you haven’t edited core BP files you should be ok. The plugins may need a one x one activate test to make sure they work.
In reply to: buddypress is striping tagsAre you using a plugin or custom code?
In reply to: Adding Dynamic Profile Link to Main Menu Itemsince this is such a requested feature i’ll update the plugin to work with other them locations besides bp-defaults
In reply to: BP.org – Us vs ThemYou don’t have to add tutorials to the blog here. Create your own blog. You don’t need permission. Others have created their own sites. Then go to codex tips and tricks and post up your link. Or you can always post a how to here in the forums. I contribute to BuddyPress and I don’t have the keys, so can you.
I’m not trying to sound hostile, just speaking my mind.
In reply to: BP.org – Us vs ThemAll of which you complain of has a feeling of “somebody should do all these things so I benefit” not “I want to help by doing all these things” and it’s coming off as anger.
I once felt similar as you do in regards to the potential. I felt things did not progress as fast as I’d like. I even went as far as saying I’d never write BP code again. Then I took a breather and rethought how I fit into the project and moved on.
Many of my suggestions here get vetoed all the time, I can point you to the trac tickets, but then I just turn those ideas into plugins that get download thousands of times. I smile because I get the feature I need and learn more about BP code.
My advice is if something isn’t being done and you think it should be then do it. You want more tutorials then write some. There is a tips and tricks section in codex you can add links to posts that are about BuddyPress.
Also, you have been negative in the wireframe threads. Stop being negative and attacking others ideas. Nothing there is stone. It’s just everyone’s ideas. Those ideas get discussed in the dev chat and decisions are made by popular vote. You don’t like it but everyone else does and idea gets voted in. That’s life my friend. Not all our wishes come true. And you sure as heck can’t sway popular vote with negativity or attacks at the ideas being presented.
See you in the dev chat!
In reply to: My host keeps shutting down my accountleave hostgator. worst hosting i ever had.
In reply to: BP Stalker – errorMighta broke with 1.6 I will check it out.
In reply to: Is this possible? YES / NO?I did not test this but this is more in the direction you want to go.
`$user = $bp_displayed_user_id ;
$capability = ‘some_s2_level’ ;if ( !bp_is_my_profile() && !is_admin() && !user_can( $user, $capability ) ) {
wp_redirect( home_url() ); exit;
}
`Also, you should write this as a function and then test against the profile page
`function my_member_level_redirect(){
if( bp_is_member() )
code to execute when on profile
}`
In reply to: @all / Mention everyone at once.You could create a function that if user is admin a check near update box all users get a notification. Funny you bring this up because I am working on an Extended Notification plugin and this is one of the features.
I wouldn’t go hacking the @mentions code.
Just go into one of the plugins and change the function the error refers too. Thus happens when people copy a plugin and don’t change function names.
In reply to: My host keeps shutting down my accountGet mediatemple grid service. It’s $20 a month and will never get shut down. It works fine for less than 5000 users. If you ever get larger they can upgrade you without you having to worry. Stay away from super cheap hosting.
In reply to: Can’t See Some Users in Members Page?Yes, they must login first.
This plugin may not work as it hasn’t been updated
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-disable-activation/if it doesn’t work reply and i’ll add a setting in BP Extended Settings to turn off activation
In reply to: Turning off and adding social layersHave you tried this plugin?

Are you using a BuddyPress compatible theme?
In reply to: Profile fields – I dont get it!On each profile field in the admin there are visibility options. Are they open for all or only user?
In reply to: BP Profile Privacy…removed class, your right, easy to target children. I have seen some stray `
` no id before.In reply to: Group Sub nav linksDeveloper has been MIA for about a year. When you install plugins make sure the developer is active in the communtiy and plugins are updated regularly. You can also hire someone to fix the plugin.
If there is contact info in the plugin file, I would try and contact the developer to get an update.
You can also try this BP trick, tricking BP to use a WP custom post type that you can edit it the wp-admin giveing you a full WYSIWYG editor.
