In reply to: Still getting spammers!! HELP!
You need to change the register slug. Pick something unique. Ex. http://www.mommychats.com/join-mommy-chats
This only blocks bots, people are getting paid pennies to sign up to sites so you can’t really block real people.
If you can, look at server logs to see a pattern for spam. Then block ip or emails. I would block yahoo emails, they are a spam haven. You could also limit to Facebook login only.
Did you by chance install WordPress through a one click host install?
@dude this keeps happening to people and i’m thinking its because sites have been hacked. Nobody has ever come up with a solution. I cant replicate it to find one. It’s probably a hacked site, if it’s not the browser saving info.
Might be a malicious plugin.
What you want is not currently possible with BuddyPress. You can only block an entire page not individual activity items.
The plugin works as advertised, it does not block group activities.
In reply to: how to create and insert a custom activity typeYou need to learn how create your own BuddyPress component first. The skeleton component plugin is a good start and has commented examples.
If you do not know how to get form values you might be in over your head. I’d google a bit and find some tutorials on php.
In reply to: how to create and insert a custom activity typeIn reply to: mobile photo sharingI doubt a native solution will be written for free, too much work and native app couldn’t be branded to an individual site. Not sure if that matters but if enough people wanted I could build one app to upload images with a site license fee. “BuddyPics” or something similarly named.
In reply to: mobile photo sharingCreating a mobile theme for BP is a huge task that others might not want to take on. There seems to be a movement in using responsive themes instead.
As for pic uploads on iOS there is only 3 options: the intermediary app, a native app and an email image option. I’ve never tried doing the email option as I think it’s a clunky method. Facebook gives this type of option but I think it’s more for feature phones with cameras, not smartphones with apps. Would instagram be as successful if you could only email in photos?
Other option, like you stated, is to use other services to get photos into BuddyPress; twitpic, instagram, Flickr etc.
In reply to: User privacy settings ineffectiveMake sure you read set up instructions. There is a code edit required to make settings work.
Looks like the code above is missing some code. You need an action saved.
In reply to: Conditional statement for member components?Try: (bp_is_page( BP_MEMBERS_SLUG ))
Picup app is another native app that uses JavaScript to get an image URL. The issue with these apps are they DO NOT upload to your server they get the image URL externally. I have succesfully created a native BuddyPress app. I’m not sure it would be of value to anyone because of it not being branded to every individual site. Considering the only real reason for a native app is image uploads I didn’t think it was worth losing brandability. This is why I’ve chosen web tech for mobile.
Not easily possible on iOS, might be possible on some Android devices. There is a way by using a native app on iOS but It’s too much work involved for a free plugin.
In reply to: BuddyPress Mobile Domain MappingThere should be a link in your sites footer to switch back and forth, I don’t think domain mapping will work very well considering the hijacking of theme is how bp mobile currently works. There will be a future version that does away with theming in the WordPress sense and will use an API and then you will be able to put mobile version on another url. You will be able to even create a service that allows users to send content to your site from another domain. Think twitter apps.
In reply to: Import Twitter Feed (not buddystream)Ahh JavaScript that magical thing. Make sure you add this code to footer so it won’t slow your page loads.
In reply to: Import Twitter Feed (not buddystream)Activity items must have a user ID attached and then BP does a little code magic to get the image url. Not an easy way to get the avatar on the fly.
In reply to: Buddypress DB queriesUse a cache plugin
In reply to: Import Twitter Feed (not buddystream)PressCrew’s external blog plugin is for Users, the older plugin is for group rss feeds.
In reply to: Import Twitter Feed (not buddystream)CJ, the blogs plugin adds tweets to the database and only gets new ones every 30 min so rate limit doesn’t really get reached.
In reply to: Import Twitter Feed (not buddystream)True, but I’m making it more apparent what are tweets and what are blog feeds.
CJ, I’m updating bp share it as a jetpack add on, so it wouldn’t be a good idea to duplicate the plugin.
In reply to: Import Twitter Feed (not buddystream)I’m going to update the bp External blogs plugin in a few days and it will import tweets to a groups activity stream.
In reply to: Using BP content / API to create an iphone appYou can convert php to json easily enough. The challeng is getting the right data from BP to function like an API. I have a 50% API done but I had problems with some of the info because of the database structure.
The best way would be to pull from database directly convert to json and disregard BP functions. The future web will work this way sooner or later. Web pages will be built from API data and not this archaic page rebuild method we currently use. Twitter.com is an example of this, the site is a web app pulling it’s data from the same API native apps use.
In reply to: Using BP content / API to create an iphone appBuddyPress has no API for external communication. It was created before the mobile scene took off and now apps have become the norm. You could load web pages in a native app that were optimized but it wouldn’t be 100% like a native app. You could also create your own json API.
I have this on a site and it was neither hacky or fiddly, I’ll add the ability to bp share it plugin but I warn that the plugins next version will require Jetpack
