In reply to: The wire won’t update…
Wire? What version of BP are you using?
You have to edit the part about the server. On mamp it will be localhost and your user name and password is usually root. This is so WP can connect to your local database.
// ** MySQL settings – You can get this info from your web host ** //
/** The name of the database for WordPress */
define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘buddypress’);/** MySQL database username */
define(‘DB_USER’, ‘root’);/** MySQL database password */
define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘root’);/** MySQL hostname */
define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’);As for creating a database you go to phpmyadmin enter a name of the db in the create database input and hit create.
Then in the wp-config file you enter the name you entered here define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘ PUT YOUR DB NAME HERE’);
In reply to: Buddypress Text to all caps.profile{
text-transform: uppercase;
}Add that to your CSS file
In reply to: Child Theme questionI would add it as a sub domain then. You could do a different install all together or put your WP install into multisite mode and use the instructions in the link below.

In reply to: Any plugin/hack to allow update space in top bar?That file is the complete post form but you may need to edit it to make it work on other areas. I wouldn’t do it on a live site.
You could try adding this somewhere in a theme file.
<?php locate_template( array( 'activity/post-form.php'), true ) ?>
In reply to: Child Theme questionI think it depends of your site. If you have a blog site with social component added then stick with template pack. If you want more of a social site with a bit of blogging then i’d go with a full BP child theme.
No wrong or right just different options. Upgrading a child theme is significantly easier than the template pack. Currently the template pack is two versions behind.
In reply to: Any plugin/hack to allow update space in top bar?You can use the code from plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/activity/post-form.php to cobble a post form on other areas of a site.
Well, don’t blast something for being exactly what it’s suppose to be. Since BP is a WordPress plugin and the dummies books are for absolute beginners then it makes sense to spend a great deal on the core. Is there room for more documentation? Yes!
Read the documentation on this site: http://codex.buddypress.org

http://wpmu.org/category/buddypressI’m sure there are more resources out there. Just search or ask.
In reply to: Why using pages for BP sections is a bad ideaThe reason I suggest something along the lines of post types is to allow adding new “components” so BP would install activity – forums – groups etc content types and then a theme could add it’s own. Allowing more individualized networks. BP could be nothing more than allowing front end editing of post types / components. But this will never happen. From a BP core devs mouth “can of worms”
In reply to: Why using pages for BP sections is a bad ideaShould be post type. Then BP could use post type templates for output. Create a group post type and it will add URL.
In reply to: BuddyPress for dummies book“There is no listing and explanation of functions. There is no explanation of hooks, actions or filters.”
LOL, it’s called “dummies” meaning for people who don’t even know how to install WordPress let alone BP. The Dummies book is great for an absolute beginner. If you have moderate experience with WordPress, then no, the dummies book will not do you any good. You are better off reading this forum, going through the developer docs.
Not to mention, why are you replying to a topic that is 8 months old? Are you a troll?
I asked about this weeks ago and no one has responded. I even offered to update the template files my self.
In reply to: Happy Christmas!Cheers!
In reply to: Default theme with widgetized home pageI will be updating themes this week.
Read these docs. https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/
This isn’t BP specific. Google is your friend. There a ton of tutorials about WordPress plugin creation.
In reply to: Why no good buddypress WP Themes?If you used the template pack plugin and BP looks “awful” with your WP theme it’s because the template pack is missing most of the CSS styling. It’s a bare bones to get BP to work inside WP themes. Your statement that there are no good BP themes is flawed in that any WP theme can be used with a little adjustment to the HTML and CSS.
Another reason there not that many BP themes that are different is because all BP themes are child themes and severly retards enabling custom themes but that is another discussion.
That is the BP classic theme. If you download an old version of BP you can get the code out of that theme but you may have to edit code to work properly.
Search, there is a plugin that allows you to set up default settings for newly activated WPMU blogs. I can’t think of the name but it’s out there.
In reply to: Where can I add some php code in activity page?wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/activity/
In reply to: RiotCart.com: A ReworkingIn reply to: Citizen Kane Theme white spaceI’ve fixed this and will upload to WP repo when BP gets updated.
In reply to: I need a tutorial of Citizen Kane ThemeYou are missing some CSS. This is the theme that’s in the WP repo. http://tempsg.com I notice that a plugin is adding @jQuery more than once and this theme is using jQuery to add CSS. Try disabling plugins. Having jquery load more than once can break javascript. Might be the site wide activity widget.
In reply to: Default theme with widgetized home pageYes, waiting on the next BP release and then I’ll update the theme in the WP repo. Right now, child themes are getting rejected becasuse the bp-default theme is not meeting WP theme standards.
