    I am a huge fan of cometchat… It integrates with the BuddyPress user system (single-signon). It’s also $49.00, but well worth it as it just works (if you have a fast enough server VPS or better). This is what I use on MusicPLN.org.

    @karmatosed the plugin is here (and this link is posted at the above link I posted):
    http://bp-tricks.com/wp-content/uploads/external-member-blogs.zip

    It is listed on that page, but for some reason is not int he WP repository… it’s a great plugin, and no others really like it (via @boromir)

    These failed for me in 1.5 beta:

    Bp-Like – Failed. via @hempsworth (will be updated soon according to him)

    Activity-Stream-Bump-to-top failed. via @nuprn1 (Currently Rich is not updating this, but I hope somebody does for 1.5 as this is a most useful plugin)

    External blog failed. via @bowromir found here:

    Ok, so the issue was resolved by upgrading to the latest BP-Pro Mag theme… Here is my question for the “know-how-to-do-its”… If this is a jquery/theme issue, then what files must be replaced on the theme to make it work correct… I think if you post the answer here, people will find it and fix the problem themselves…

    I’ve read this same problem being asked multiple ways on the site and there is no explanation of what to fix other than to “have the theme updated”… is it just a matter of swapping out jquery files? If so which ones? If something additional, what then?

    Thanks and hope the coming answer(s) will help someone.

    When I upgraded to 1.2.9, I experienced this same issue… I just discovered it from my upgrade to 1.5 bleeding… it’s appears to be a theme issue for sure…. I can disable all of my plugins/bp-custom.php and I still have this issue with my current theme…. when I switch to the default theme, the problem disappears…

    So to recap… for me, not a plugin or custom.php issue, but a theme issue AND I am experiencing this in current stable of BuddyPress… I’ve asked @sbrajesh to look at this as I’m using his themes….

    Just some more info to this.

    I would like to add that I’m also looking for a mod/hack/plugin that would allow someone OTHER than administrators at the ADMIN USER ROLE LEVEL to mark spammers and edit text on all of the streams while NOT giving the access to the ADMIN-side of the Back end… a real problem on our site…. because of this I have few ADMINS with the ability to do this type of BASIC “global” moderating across all groups/forums, etc…

    Here is a recap of some posts I posted at http://buddydev.com recently:

    I use Bp-Cosmic-Pro Theme built of of bp-mag and have about one spam registration per couple of weeks (and it’s usually a real person that registers and gets through)… They are caught within minutes of posting something ridiculous and marked as spammers by the admins.

    There are a number of reasons for that:

    1. It’s a closed/ register only site (but free to all), (note: I do not require e-mail validation either)
    2. I use BuddyPress Humanity Anti-Spam Plugin
    3. I use Si-Captcha Anti-Spam
    3. Multiple Profile fields are required to be filled-in at registration as an ANTI-SPAM measure – in part.
    4. I have a TERMS and use that Requires THE CHECKING of a box to register.
    5. I use the bad behavior plugin to keep out the crazies and use the Blocking-list feature of it.

    Occasionally, I get the I can’t register e-mail, but it is rare and there is a note for people to contact me if they can’t register properly… I have 1700 active (non-spam users) on my site and virtually no SPAM.

    I believe one of the keys to success here is that it is a “private site” and as such it’s not indexed (I realize this could be a problem for many sites, but not my niche site). So, sites don’t scrape it as a potential source to attack.

    I would also recommend the ANIMAL BuddyPress Captcha plugin.

    *****************************

    I usually think about SPAM protection in the form of a Castle for open community WordPress Sites:
    1. The Moat: Programs like Bad-Behavior and plugins that stop bots/scrapers before they get “through” to the site.
    2. The Gate/Drawbridge: Programs like Captchas, Math Challenges, Reverse fields that SHOULDN’T be filled in to “trap” bots from auto-filling.
    3. The Keep: Programs like Akismet.
    4. The Guards: Moderators with the ability to knock out spam when they see it.

    The biggest issue with BuddyPress is that THERE IS NO KEEP (no. 3 above) for the Activity Streams…
    As far as I know, there are not programs like Akismet or any of the “KARMA” / Comment anti-spam plugins that work for the BuddyPress group/activity/forum streams… DJ-PAUL has talked about making Akismet work on BuddyPress Streams at the BuddyPress.org site, but there is nothing yet that I know of yet –

    If anyone does know of something that will “auto-moderate” the BuddPress Stream updates/comments, please let me know… ;)

    Regards.

    As I am not able to program this type of thing… Is there anyone out there that already has a patch/mod for this type of “super-user” for BuddyPress?

    I need users that can edit moderate every group as well as make text edits and delete items in the activity stream, yet has not access to screw things up in the back-end, because they are “admins”.

    @pisanojm

    @djpaul I saw you all moved the roles adaption to BP back to 1.4 in the trac.

    Is there any quick fix to give somebody the ability to edit all groups/activity yet not make them an admin? This is the biggest issue for us. We need a way to make a couple of users moderate everything as well as be able to edit activity items, etc.

    I am using cometchat quite successfully and it works great with BP. It is a single-user sign in and pulls avatars and passwords from your wordpress/bp site. You can choose to have friend-to-friend chats or make public/ private rooms… You can also choose not to have it appear for non-logged in users. You can also have other modules like Wibya chat… I have had not one issue with it on my site. It is a little heavy for shared-hosting… if you have a VPS 512 Meg plus, you should be fine. It’s well worth the $49 U.S. dollars. They are working on version 3.0 and it should be out within the next 2 months, so it should be getting better (free upgrades for those of you within the year of your purchase).

    It speeds up my site… I’m using opcode xcache for database cache, so my guess is that people using “disk” aren’t experiencing the gains.

    @pisanojm

    Do you think we will be at 1.3 by 1.4 time slot? I guess there is no use of trying to anticipate the next major update… there still are 60+ tickets in the trac, most without patches.

    Here is a good answer by Frederick Townes the developer of the W3TC plugin:

    @pisanojm

    I mistakenly posted above, we are using “database” caching. Object caching did not work for us and caused many problems with others seeing other users names appear when viewing private messages as well as other object cache related issues.

    Greg, I am using W3TC for object caching (xcache opcode) and browser caching. Along with that I am using MAXCDN as the CDN (was prior using Amazon S3). MAXCDN is set now to cache almost all of my graphics, css, and javascripts -including plugins and child-themes. One of the two sites I was referring to is a straight WordPress site: http://mustech.net and the other is a BUDDYPRESS, non-multi-site (single site), site (htttp://musicpln.org – registration only).

    I’ve set up a different pullzone for each of the sites using maxcdn.

    Just a quantity FYI. My MAXCDN sites are serving about 200-300 megabytes of information per day. I have two highly visited sites that receive about 1000 uniques per day, so this will give you and idea as to how long one terrabyte of of data will last you with the MAXCDN lowest-price plan.

    At 250 Megabytes per day that is 1 Gigabyte per 4 days. So 1000 gigabytes will give you 4000 days, but you only get that amount per year, so you would renew again after 1 year and the limits would be re-established. Even if you are pulling 1 gigabyte per day, you would have 1,000 days (again only 365 in a year). So, before you would have to be looking at a larger pay-plan with MAXCDN you would need to be pulling about 3 gigabytes of information per day to exceed the MAXCDN low-price plan limit. Just some info/thoughts.

    It was a good day when Bowe showed me I could use MAXCDN to cache avatars… It was not working with my older AMAZON S3 CDN solution and I was actively trying to find someone for over 7 months to tell me why! Today, I finally got the xcache php opcode to work on both my server and for specifically for BuddyPress (using it for database caching via w3tc). Things are moving along quite nicely now.

    The key to maximizing MAXCDN is to cache all of your plugins’ css, images, and javascripts… once you do this, it flies!

    Reposting Bowe’s Link here for MAXCDN and BP:

    With regard to wp-minify or w3tc minify and buddypress, I’ve never been happy with the results of this as usually it will stop something completely from functioning, no matter how careful I was in trying to exclude potential CSS/JS issues individually. I am using wp-minify successfully on a number of less active WordPress sites though… I may give minify a go again some time later, much later! :)

    Bowe… carrying over this conversation here… It does seem indeed that the issue is because of the older Amazon S3 technology… I’ve switched to MAX CDN mirroring and the problem I’ve bean having for over 7 months with this virtually looks like it has disappeared! I will report back in a few days to a week on my progress. Best!

    This is very well done, but there are still issues with what you have described and getting it to work with personal/group avatars… I detailed on your site…

    @pisanojm

    @bowromir ..very excited to see what you come up with for a cdn for avatars today!

    @pisanojm

    @bowromir That would be incredible!

    @pisanojm

    What I really need is a way to CDN the avatars… this would be a huge help, but so far no one has come up with a good way to do it other than @apeatling on the BP-Demo site, but none of us know how he did it yet… :)

    I use w3 Total cache.. I use the CDN, the Database Cache, and the Browser Cache… I do not use the object cache as it completely screws things up… the page cache will also completely screw your site up… I do not use the minify cache in W3, but I do use wp-minify for javascript and css compression….

    I had problems with WP Super-cache, but I don’t remember what they were and they were obviously related to the page cache though…

    @pisanojm

    If you are using a CDN, the uploading of an avatar and not excluding the avatars it will almost always result in a “broken” looking link….
