I think there’s a benefit to allowing the blog URL to be chosen.
What if someone decides to put in a super-long title for their blog?
eg. “My fantabulously great blog on widgets” would turn into:
hxxp://example.com/myfantabulouslygreatblogonwidgets/ or
hxxp://myfantabulouslygreatblogonwidgets.example.com
Which wouldn’t be great.
Hey hatiro,
Here’s the code again on PasteBin:
http://buddypress.pastebin.com/f36cf5cab
I’ve set it so it won’t expire.
Remember to add the bp_loaded() function to your /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php
Also remember to change the blog directory loop in your BP member theme – /wp-content/bp-themes/YOURBPTHEME/directories/blogs/blogs-loop.php
Hey hatiro,
I had a question about the exact same thing a couple of months ago; here’s the thread:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/excluding-certain-blogs-from-bp_has_site_blogs-function
In reply to: Why is BuddyPress stripping my object or embed tags?Hmm… interesting. I’ll have to make note of this for my own needs as well!
Anyway, you don’t have to hack the kses.php file, you could use an mu-plugin like Embed Allower:
Or Allow Embedded Videos:
In reply to: Members, Groups and Blogs style sheets not workingHey Dworldon,
I used Firebug for Firefox to look at your /members/ page and your server could not find this file:
http://bucksboardroom.com/wp-content/bp-themes/bpmember/css/loader.php
Make sure you copied everything over from the “bpmember” directory.
In reply to: move /members directory to another domain ?!Hey Jeff,
I noticed the links to the tickets. I’m pretty sure you’re not mistaken about the BP_ROOT_BLOG issues, Jeff; I was just commenting on jorries’ workaround.
In reply to: move /members directory to another domain ?!That’s an interesting solution, jorries.
Much simpler than what I was thinking of!
I learn something new about BuddyPress all the time!
In reply to: Why is BuddyPress stripping my object or embed tags?Hey Peter,
Have you tried enabling the Unfiltered MU plugin in the blog in question before you imported your posts?
Burt’s solution applies only to BP components, so if you’re not using object or embed tags in any BP component don’t worry about it.
In reply to: Why is BuddyPress stripping my object or embed tags? There’s a reason why the embed and object tags are disabled by default, Peter.
If you’re going to open up your BP network to any user, they can potentially exploit those tags and do all kinds of nasty stuff.
The Unfiltered MU plugin works for admins and editors in WordPress, but it depends what BP component you’re trying to use the embed/object tags in BP.
Burt’s solution is the preferred method.
In reply to: Only show required fields on signup formYou could use jQuery to select the “for” attribute so you can hide it.
Read up on jQuery selectors:
http://docs.jquery.com/Selectors/attributeEquals
Try this:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
$("label[for='field_3']").css({'display' : 'none'});
});
</script>You’ll need to have the jQuery library somewhere in your HTML source.
In reply to: Facebook-esque status updates?not really texet, the wire is more like Facebook’s wall
.status updates are personal updates about w/e you want. you can only have 1 update in the status place and when you want to update, it deletes your previous status.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around status updates… couldn’t you just use your latest wire post with an expiry date of a week? By “expiry”, I mean the wire post won’t be shown underneath your name, but will be archived in the wire). Functionality-wise, they’re both the same… the only difference I see is segregating data and labels. But maybe I’m just daft and slow on the uptake!
In reply to: HTML tags in group forumsHey DJPaul,
My post was off-topic; you’re right, I’ve copied and pasted my above post and created a new thread:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bbpress-migration-when-bp-11-gets-released
Feel free to delete my previous post now (and this one as well)!
Ditto!
In reply to: HTML tags in group forumsHey Jeff, this is kind of moving a little off-topic, but how would existing BP users with bbPress installed migrate to the new system for v1.1?
We’re using bbPress for main , general discussions as well as BP group forums.
So when BP 1.1 gets released and I want to keep the existing bbPress install, but want to use the updated BP forum code… how would that work?
I’m guessing I would have to rely on some form of legacy compatibility and keep on using XMLRPC? Or leave the existing bbPress install alone and use the new BP forum code (which is some form of embedded instance of bbPress within BP, if I understand correctly)?
In reply to: Use Album Plugin or Wait?I’d rather wait as well, but I also want to give our users something to use in the meantime.
Manoj’s plugin has some code in the background for future releases (such as privacy), but it hasn’t been implemented yet… probably waiting for BP 1.1, like Jeff said to continue work.
I’ve modified Manoj’s plugin slightly to add a couple of template tags in the meantime.
In reply to: Remove Create a Blog option from signupBack to the topic at hand…
@Michael Berra – Your plugin requires that javascript is on, which, for most of us, will be sufficient… there’s always that 10% that won’t have it on though
In reply to: Will BuddyPress work with Multi-Site Manager PluginI got a reply from Ron over at WPMUTutorials.com.
If you’re interested in our discussion, head on over to:
http://wpmututorials.com/how-to/blog-categories/
A summary of what Ron wrote:
1- BP is enabled on a WPMU site basis so when running multiple site, BP can be enabled on one site and not another.
2- The same applies to site options/settings like registration.
3- BP does not filter a user’s blog list on the member profile by WPMU site. So, if you had 5 sites and a user had a blog in 4 of them then all 4 blogs would be listed.
One way you could accomplish the multisite setup where BP is on the main site and blogs on the additional sites is
Enable BP only on the main site.
On the main site set registration to users only.
On the additional sites set registration to only users can create blogs.
Create an info page on the main site that provides links to each of the other sites’ signup page.
This is a little bit involved and I’m a little pressed for time; I would at some point like to tackle this… but then I’d have to worry about redirecting /copying over blogs and permalinks on the existing WPMU setup… (sigh).

@Jeff and Jason – Thanks for the info.
Donncha’s Domain Mapping plugin wouldn’t work in my situation because I’ve setup WPMU with subdirectories and not subdomains.
Re: the Multi-site plugin on WPMUDev. That one is different than the one that Ron has developed. So I’m not sure if XMLRPC will work with Ron’s version… a good question to ask him!
In reply to: Will BuddyPress work with Multi-Site Manager Plugin(I believe what I’m about to write is relatable to the topic at hand; if not, feel free to close the thread!)
I’m just starting to grasp the whole concept of multi-sites.
From what I’ve read, it’s exactly what I want to do.
But I need some clarification.
Here’s my setup, I have WPMU+BuddyPress installed in the root:
hxxp://www.example.com (blog_id #1 should be shown here, including all its posts, categories and pages)
I want all subsequent blogs to be created from
hxxp://blogs.example.com
So that new blogs will have a subdirectory under that subdomain.
eg. hxxp://blogs.example.com/newuserblog/
Single sign-on should work across the root and subdomain.
From those that have responded to me on the WPMU forums, this should be possible with the multi-site plugin.

Now for the BuddyPress questions!
Okay, so let’s say I login to BuddyPress (which is installed in the root instance of MU) and I want to create a new blog from “My Account > Create a blog”, would BuddyPress be creating this new blog under the new Site instance (eg. the subdomain Site – blogs.example.com? This is what I would want to do. I’m guessing this would require some core hacking.
Also, if I go to hxxp://www.example.com/blogs, would this show blogs from the blogs.example.com subdomain?

Thanks for reading! Hope to hear some feedback!
In reply to: Blog-Bug?Hi Arghagain,
That plugin doesn’t look like it adjusts any privacy blog options.
So you should be safe!
It looks like something else (or some other plugin) is causing your problem.
In reply to: Blog-Bug?Are you using a MU plugin that overrides the blog privacy option such as “New Blog Defaults”?
In reply to: How to change built in BuddyPress verbiageI’ve already done this and the custom language file works wonders!
Although you’ll have to learn the lingo all you mo-po’s out there! (bad joke, but anyway!)
In reply to: Autogenerate or remove usernameOh sorry! I think I’m confusing what you’re trying to do.
You’re trying to auto-generate the username based off the display name xprofile field, correct?
If so, the display name is still editable via the “Edit Profile” screen (like I stated above). Not sure what would happen if you attempted to change the display name… would it sync up with the usermeta table?
My guess from the post I wrote above is “no”, since you only have your function running when a user has activated their account. But I guess that’s the point!

Re: rearranging the signup page… BP 1.1 will enable you to move fields around on the sign up page. Check out testbp.org as an example of a customized register page.
In reply to: Autogenerate or remove usernameI’ve noticed that you have an add_action only when WPMU activates a user… you should also do a check when someone tries to change the full name via BuddyPress – “My Account > Profile > Edit Profile”.
Not sure what the action would be for that.
In reply to: Use Album Plugin or Wait? Thanks for that clarification, Jeff!
I was hesitant to install Manoj’s version, but now that Andy has verified some form of compatibility with the forthcoming “official” album component, I’ll install Manoj’s one for now!
In reply to: Signatures (BBPress & BuddyPress)I’m using bpGroups and first of all you should follow the instructions properly.
Make sure your files are in the right directories.
/wp-content/mu-plugins/oci_bp_group_forums.php
/YOUR BBPRESS INSTALL DIRECTORY/my-plugins/oci_bb_group_forums.php

Also, because you’re using deep integration, you’ll need to make the following changes:
