    Your solution: copying the whole BuddyPress function and changing one line is not the best way to do this.

    As I suggested earlier — that BuddyPress function has a filter for the post types it works with: bp_blogs_record_post_post_types

    All you need to do is register a filter that adds your custom post types to the array of post types.

    Yes, you have the BuddyPress function to use to get the URL, and the rest (image links) is basic PHP / HTML and / or CSS.

    If you are looking to modify your theme, and don’t have a grounding in PHP / HTML / CSS, it would make sense to do a primer in these first.

    Did this work on your test / development site? Have you run through all of the questions / checks Paul has given you to the letter – when it comes to BuddyPress, he knows what he’s talking about.

    Ok, my suggested further steps for how you can ascertain information that will help you find the problem on your site:

    1. Turn off all your plugins — not just those you think could interfere — just leaving BuddyPress activated
    2. Switch to the bp-default theme
    3. And to be extra safe — remove your bp-custom.php file

    [You’ll probably want to do this on a mirror development environment, if you’ve already taken the site live]

    If emails don’t work in this basic BuddyPress install, you know it is a problem with your hosting, general email setup or installation.

    If emails do work, you know it is a problem in either your theme or your plugins. Try adding them back one by one, and test at each stage.

    Yes, but you could modify those pages to use an alternative avatar function

    This comment sounds like a general WordPress / User Role Editor plugin issue, and not anything to do with BuddyPress – Have you asked on their forums?

    BuddyPress provides a filter to let you do this.

    If you look through the code for recording a post (hooked on save_post) in the bp-blogs component, you should be able to figure out how to use it.

    Have you switched to bp-default theme as well, and tested.

    By default BuddyPress doesn’t send ‘crazy amounts of emails’, and doesn’t typically email to every user — what emails are you receiving? What notifications do you have turned on? Is it site wide notifications? What theme are you using? Please provide as much information as you can, as it makes it easier for people on the forum to help you

    It can be achieved, but will involve a number of changes. If you are not a competent PHP / BuddyPress developer, then you would be best to hire one for this job

    If you have a look at the bp_message_thread_avatar() function in the BuddyPress codebase, you can see which arguments it accepts, and also which functions it calls onto to get an avatar.

    That should help you determine which alternative avatar function to use.

    No, no PHP required.

    Just do it with CSS and nested selectors.

    Something like:

    .directory li.nav-item, .my-account li.nav-item {
    background-color: blue;
    }

    Have a look at some of the classes applied to body — there’s no single class being used for BuddyPress pages, but the set is quite small, and you should be able to base your selectors on them to capture whether you are on a BP page or not:

    .directory …. , .my-account … , etc.

    And, if you are using a pre-processor such as LESS or SASS, it makes it much easier to write nested CSS like this

    Glad the solution worked. Thanks for the feedback

    Posts are added to the activity stream when the post is saved.

    It’s done in the bp_blogs_record_post() function, which is hooked on to the save_post action.

    There isn’t any easy way to filter bp_blogs_record_post() to stop certain categories appearing, so, your best options may be:

    1. To unhook the whole bp_blogs_record_post() function and replace with your own
    or:
    2. Use a custom post type for your teaser posts – the built in function will only post to activity stream if the post type is ‘post’

    Doug — the notification will be because I explicitly @mention ‘d you in the reply.

    Yes, the behaviour of these forums is not a good advert for BuddyPress — although some of that is down to the coding of this site, rather than a BuddyPress specific problem.

    Recently, a plugin version of bbPress was released, which significantly improved support for forums on a BuddyPress based site. That gives proper notifications, and the sort of features you’d expect from regular forums. Unfortunately, the alternative ‘group based forums’ as used on this site, really don’t deliver a good experience.

    @douglerner —

    There are some off the shelf plugins for import from CSV file, but I’ve heard varying reports on whether they work successfully.

    In the cases were we’ve needed it, we built our own custom routines to bulk import users from CSV file into BuddyPress. It could certainly be done for your data set.

    re: your ps. No, there’s no way of receiving notifications. The ‘support forums’ would be far more useful if they were built on traditional forum software.

    It’s possible – but not via the extended profile fields.

    The best solution probably involves developing a custom BP profile component to handle the images, and then some front end manipulation to make it appear ‘in position’ in profile edits / views.

    Actions are a standard part of WordPress programming – if you check the WordPress.org documentation, or any good book on advanced WordPress PHP development, you should be able to find good guidance.

    You have a number of ways to build links to member profile:

    Outside the loop, you can pass the member’s user id to bp_core_get_user_domain()

    Inside a members loop, you can use functions such as bp_get_member_permalink(). Look up member loops in the Codex for more information on this.

    @pawriter – if you go to wordpress.com — the reader shows you latest featured blog posts from the blogs on the site. Which is what the described solution tells you how to achieve using BuddyPress in a multisite install

    Take a look at the bp_insert_activity_meta() function – you’ll need to work with the filters in there to modify the date output.

    It’s called indirectly from entry.php in your activity folder, and is responsible for formatting the date.

    It would be a lot easier if was formatted in the template files, but unfortunately it is hard coded in this core function – so working with the filters is your best option.

    No, they are talking about changing your entire theme, not a page template

    From Appearance … Themes… choose bp-default, and test if it works

    If it fails in bp-default as well, there is something wrong with your installation.

    if it works in bp-default, it’s something wrong in your Parallelus theme.

    However, that’s not easy for you to do if your site is already live. The best option would be to set up a separate test installation to test these things on. It sounds like you probably need to engage a developer if you go down that route.

    @rogercoathup

    Participant

    As you are using the Parallelus theme – it might be worth asking on their support forums if this is a known problem

    s2member and gravity (with it’s mail chimp extension) allow you to build alternative registration forms with mail chimp opt in options.

    take a look at this page for details of accessing the logged in user domain:

    https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/the-bp-global/

    There are also some wrapper functions you can use – e.g. bp_loggedin_user_domain()
