In reply to: Pathetic functionality here on this forum
BuddyPress only has very limited forum support. A bbpress plugin beta was scheduled for Sept 15 but has not materialised yet.
You are right that this site’s support area would be better served by an independent forum implementation. It’s very difficult to follow threads and find previously discussed topics.@hnla – Might work well on the home page – you log in, and the sidebar immediately shows you a set of posts that are targeted to your interests.
Personalised content if you like.
It’s a useful snippet of code to bring posts relevant to some metadata (in this case an interests list). You could see it in other scenarios, e.g. you create a group about “Liquorice Allsorts” and a routine like this could pull in all relevant blog posts.
@tak5haka – impressed you stuck with it through the upgrade issues.
amongst other things, you are doing an assignment there (

. Bracketing the logical parts that belong together would also make your code easier to read.In reply to: Club Belote@rossagrant – cartoons were in house by the client.
@anindyaray – to write your own theme for BuddyPress, you will need to have a basic knowledge of PHP. The PHP ‘if’ statement is fairly fundamental.
Checking the tutorial on the PHP site would be a good start: http://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php – then your questions on here can be BuddyPress specific, rather than PHP, allowing this forum to help you (and others) more effectively
In reply to: Club BeloteJust when you are logged out
In reply to: Club Belotemerci @Chouf1 – oui, notre client a des problèmes avec le RSS feed
stats plugins can also be a big problem
Search this forum.. It’s a known problem with the 1.2.6 upgrade
Solution towards bottom of the thread
put this in the gallery group
In reply to: functions.php and bp-custom.phpYou should set your slugs in wp-config.php
Comments should be fine in bp-custom.php – there must some error in the way you have the file set up
Ps you are right that functions.php is theme specific, and bp-custom.php is install wide. However there are also order of invocation issues.. They don’t happen at the same place in the initialisation.
For slug and URL mods have a read of the documentation on here
No, any new template tags will not be recognised by your 1.2.5.2 installations.
I’m dismayed by the 1.2.5.2 -> 1.2.6 decision making – with users unable to use 1.2.5.2 themes on 1.2.6. You’d expect some new features in a minor subversion upgrade, some additional template tags you could take or leave, but not for the behaviour of key regularly used functions to be changed overnight (e.g. the multiple friend button issue).
It’s been an issue for us with how on earth we can handle existing bespoke client implementations, but you raise another problem for generic theme developers – you’d have to have two versions of your theme.
In reply to: Editing profile redirects to homepage?remove the space from the username – not sure how you managed to get one in the first place; I thought BuddyPress prevented usernames with spaces
Did you look in the documentation section before posting, or use the search?
This has been covered many times in the forums, and there are sections to read in the Codex Documentation on how to check your site is configured properly.
In reply to: Update permalinks in activity stream@pcwriter – Yes, the performance thing was interesting.
Quoting his SEO recommendations (@mikey3d) as though he were an authority, wasn’t so clever.
Here’s a link from seomoz.org (they make their money knowing about SEO): http://www.seomoz.org/knowledge/url – they are also open to reasoned debate about whether they are right or wrong!

As for your link problem – that’s because your activity stream items are ‘compiled’ when the activity was created – not when it is displayed – when it was created, you had your old permalink structure (so, that’s what got displayed).
It’s more luck, rather than design, that Otto’s permalink structure also maps your old permalink structure to the same pages as your new structure. I’d happily take the lucky break though!
My thoughts:-
If you don’t have a lot of activity already, and don’t expect a huge huge site (with performance worries!) – then go for the SEO friendly (/%category%/%postname%/), and accept a few of the old permalinks won’t work.
If not, stick with the Otto settings that are working at the momentIn reply to: Editing profile redirects to homepage?Your site was working fine when I went to it… clicking through to the profile worked without problem from the members directory.
Note: though your url is wrong in this thread… there should be a space (%20) between the “the%20duke”.
Which edit menu is giving you the problem? Maybe that one is stripping out spaces.
As a warning, I’d always be cautious about allowing usernames (not display names) with spaces
In reply to: Editing profile redirects to homepage? And is it the activated theme on your BuddyPress site?
Do the other BuddyPress links work.. Members, groups, activity?
Hover over your profile link – which URL is it trying to send you to?In reply to: Update permalinks in activity streamIt would be fine, if Otto wasn’t misinformed about SEO. Having a meaningful category name in there does help, and having your postname (keyword rich) as close as possible to start of the URL helps.
Either that, or seomoz, and lots of other SEO experts are completely wrong.
Try changing your permalinks to /%category%/%postname%/
Can you do that, or do you get an error message?
If successful, do BuddyPress links now work
If not, you need to configure your server correctly for WordPress before using BuddyPressIn reply to: Editing profile redirects to homepage?Have you installed / activated a BuddyPress compatible theme, eg bp-default, on your BuddyPress site?
In reply to: Forum Topics Missing (in FF not Opera)have you used firebug to inspect?
Which theme are you using? Have you tried with bp-default?
Does it show in safari / ie / chrome?
One thought.. Is the table marked up correctly? V4 of firefox is much stricter re: table markup needing to be valid. Have a search of firefox site for details on that one
Did you look in the documentation on this site before posting?
Look at BuddyPress template tags in the documentation section.
[Edit: having told you to look there, the function you actually need is missing. Try bp_is_my_profile()]
In reply to: not support jquery append Function?it should be including jQuery v1.4.2 fully.
If you have a problem with append, it’s probably the way you are using it. It’s impossible to tell though unless you post more information about your configuration, javascript and error message.
In reply to: Slugsif you are just changing text:
