@tindell – this is one of several areas where the BuddyPress core API embeds too much markup and presentation, causing a consequent problem for developers.
If you look at my solution on page 1 of this thread, you have the solution for this problem for thumbnails.
As for your note:
Buddypress is great providing you don’t want to change anything expect a few colours
To a large extent that’s true if you are building child themes from bp-default.
You can develop true bespoke sites with BuddyPress, but it’s not a trivial development process – the API could be much cleaner.
@katemgilbert – just noticed this. We built helloecoliving.com.
For that site, BuddyPress is installed on the main blog, not a sub-blog.
It just takes a little bit of work in your theme to create a separate tab / page for the community.
For an example on a later version of BuddyPress, take a look at the site we built for http://bitsythis.com – there a dedicated community page (with accompanying theme template) aggregates a lot of the community activity.
Cheers, Roger
Bp-default .. Not no-default! Auto-correct spelling!
Which theme are you using? Does it work (with attempt one) if you switch to no-default theme?
If not, did you cut and paste the line? You may have incorrect type of quotes. Try typing line from scratch in editor
This is often a problem with the Javascript code (from the default theme) requiring a very specific div naming and layout structure. If you change (improve and simplify) the default themes’s html in your theme, then the Javascript for managing the ordering / sorting will no longer work correctly.
In early BP versions, there used to be a few handy pre-populated profile fields – including a country list (I think).
Would be nice to have them back. As @djpaul suggests, some SQL and a bit of plugin coding should do the trick…. Paul: is there a nice schematic of the xprofile tables available?
Timing! I suspect the thumbnail is getting created by your plugin after the BuddyPress activity create hook.
adding the excerpt should be straightforward – around line 32 in my pastebin code (from page 1), after you’ve assigned the thumbnail to the activity_content – you’ll need to do something like:
(for standard WP excerpt):
$activity_content .= $post->post_excerpt;
(for BP excerpt):
$activity_content .= bp_create_excerpt ($post->post_content, 100) // to get the first 100 characters
Note: I might have the syntax wrong on the BP (doing it off the top of my head) – so, you may need to check the function out, and experiment a little
@leoplaw – apologies for the late heads up – BP builds / stores all the activity records when the activity happens, not when you want to display them. So, all old activity will be as per the software you had running when the activity happened.
If you want to process old activity and update them, you will need to write an activity loop, finding all relevant entries (e.g. user and / or activity type) and replacing the activity record appropriately. Perhaps something you’d write as a plugin, and trigger manually from wp-admin backend.
In reply to: Changing default tab in the settings menu@mercime – yes, we had already had to adopt the solution of writing our own version of bp_core_add_settings_nav() – similarly to your suggestion.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t answer why bp_core_new_nav_default() doesn’t work with the settings menu.
In reply to: Changing default_subnav_slug for Activity… unfortunately, we’ve not been able to get this to work with the settings menu… will post separately
We’ve built a lot of sites on BuddyPress now… if I’d time to write about it, I’d unfortunately probably be agreeing with woothemes.
There’s a lot of great functionality ‘hidden’ in BuddyPress, but the API / template tags need some serious work – especially removing all the html they unnecessarily throw in – design & presentation decisions belong in the theme not in the API (and particularly not in the ‘get_’ functions).
If you want to break away from the default theme & basic structures, it’s not easy to theme BuddyPress: too much time is spent stripping out / rewriting unwanted functionality, rather than adding building your site and adding features.
In reply to: Changing default_subnav_slug for Activity@liping – was about to post that this may need to go into bp-custom.php rather than functions.php
This order of invocation issue should really be addressed. Changes like tab orders, removing tabs, etc. should be theme specific – i.e. you may want to run a site where you switch themes – with the presence or not of tabs being determined by the theme.
Unfortunately, needing these things to be in bp-custom.php means they affect all themes, not just the one you want it for.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up on bp_core_new_nav_default() function… I’d removed the general tab from settings… and was searching for a way to remove the default link to it that still remained.
@alcoon – we’ve raised this concern before, unfortunately it seems to fall on deaf ears.
Double add friend button is a known problem with 1.2.6 upgrade. Search on here for solution
Couple of thoughts that may help:
Have your profile fields got different IDs on the new server?
What version of BP were you on on the original server? In reply to: @mentions is confusing to members@r-a-y … cheers
In reply to: Unable To Upload AvatarsYes, I’ll second @hnla.. Definitely watch for safe mode! And backing up on checking owner – group settings, thats the reason deleting the autocreated uploads folder works.. When you recreate manually it changes the owner
In reply to: RiotCart.com: A ReworkingIt’s good to see a site that’s concentrating on usability and the tasks your users want to perform… Purpose rather than technology driven. Good luck with the venture.
Ok – have solution
It looks like the browser was using an old cached version of global.js
In reply to: Theme designers: contribute to core #2@djpaul – a more informative title on your post might help, rather than the general “theme designers: contribute to core”
added to trac #2709
@boonebgorges – given the bug fix / re-engineering is scheduled for 1.3, I’m guessing the best short term workaround is to hard code our own bespoke user nav
@leoplaw – if you check the simple:press forums further, you’ll find there are still outstanding issues in integrating with BuddyPress, around login and roles I think. My understanding is that they are talking about providing a solution in a future version of simple:press
In reply to: Buddypress doesnt really support WP3.x Multisite??@mercime provides some feedback on this on this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/can-buddypress-function-like-ning-com/
I don’t know what the future plans for BuddyPress are in this regard
