@Modemlooper – as stwc posted above, he wanted a front page other than c) A WordPress Page
Actually, not really — I just want to show one of the other default BP site sections — forums or blogs or members. But if this is a general solution that also includes that ability to do that, even better.
Hmm. Getting an error message on thread creation at testbp.org no matter what I do.
Tried it as a reply to an existing thread, and can confirm unicode’s borked.

Yep, utf-8 is set in the MU backend, and I’m showing
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />in the head.
Switched back to default theme from my childtheme and posted non-English content: same issue. Weird.
In reply to: is there a facebook plugin that…There are WP plugins that will auto-create a WordPress post from each item in an RSS feed as it happens (well, cron schedule notwithstanding, I guess, or something like that). I kind of hate Facebook, so I’m not sure, but are there RSS streams generated by the appropriate activity there?
Or, come to think of it, if there were an RSS stream from Facebook, you could just use Andy’s External Group Blogs plugin and pull the RSS items into an activity stream for a group, as well.
In reply to: \"Load more\" bugYep, confirmed by my users testing a new install. Was going to put it into trac, but I forgot (and wanted to confirm it was an actual bug) before that, so this thread can serve that purpose, I guess.
Yep, I’ve extensively customized a lot of the terminology throughout Buddypress for the install I’m currently working on.
Get POEDIT from Sourceforge for editing your language file — it makes life WAYYY easier.
Just woke up — I’m in Asia — and I’ll try this later today. Thanks again.
I continue to appreciate everyone’s help with this.
mercime, what do you mean by ‘add home.php’?
Sorry, it’s been a long, tiring day. I feel like I’m actively learning less about this stuff every day, rather than more.
Anointed’s method works…. aaaalllllmost. Redirection on loading the site, to the URL specified in the post body of the page created using his template happens nicely after modifying Settings-Reading to use that page as the Front page.
Only problem is now there are TWO Activity tabs in the navigation — one that points to the site root, and one that points to siteroot/activity.
Oh my poor brain.
I’d be interested in learning how to do alternate date/time formats for these as well.
Hmm. No interest? I guess there’s not as much demand for this as I thought there might be. Ah well, it’s here for people searching for something like this later, I guess.
In your function, try using is_front_page() or is_home() instead of bp_is_front_page().
@r-a-y Tried those, no luck, again.
@jivany, thanks, but I’m not really following how to use the
locate_template( array( 'groups/index.php' ), false );stuff either.
Pretty much ready to give up on it at this stage! Seems like it ought to be an easier thing than it is, but that’s usually the way of things…
In reply to: Pagination or multiple pages on BP forums homepagePagination works fine for me on /forums/. Not sure why you can’t see it…
Oh wait, you mean on THIS site. Never mind!
‘childtheme’ in the above is, of course, the name of your own child theme. If this doesn’t work for you, well, I probably won’t be much help, I’m sorry to say, but perhaps someone with better skills will be able to step in. Just wanted to share for other people with the same user request.
I’ve run in to this with importing a userbase to a Buddypress install. WordPress likes login names to be lowercase, with no spaces, and no non-alphanumerics (except, I think for dashes (‘-‘).
Users can, of course, make their display name anything they like.
The follow-on problem though, is with @username notifications in BP1.2+, which work on the login name and not the display name, so if a user has the login username johnsmith and the display name John, only @johnsmith will work.
(I’ve also just recently encountered a problem in that usernames with dashes cause @notifications to fail. That is, if a username is johnsmith, @johnsmith works, but if his username is john-smith @john-smith fails.)
Echoing some debug text (if I’m doing it right) doesn’t spit anything out, so I guess it’s not getting triggered. No errors in Apache error log, no PHP errors on page load.
Here’s the function from functions.php
function xe_redirect() {
echo ("<h1>HELLO I AM YOUR FRIENDLY REDIRECT FUNCTION</h1>");
if (bp_is_front_page()) {
header("Location: http://localhost.localdomain/testsite/forums/");
}
}
add_action( 'bp_init', 'xe_redirect',1 );I am bewildered.
Oh good lord I need more coffee. *hides in shame*
Error gone, of course: still no joy, though.
Hmm. Doesn’t seem to like a numeric parameter:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_LNUMBER in
/xampp/htdocs/testsite/wp-content/themes/bp-childtheme/functions.php on line 41using
function xe_redirect() {
if (bp_is_front_page()) {
header("Location: http://localhost.localdomain/testsite/members/");
}
}
add_action( 'bp_init', 'xe_redirect' 1);Thanks for continuing to help, Xevo. Still no joy with either of those options, though!
In reply to: Theme customizationAnything is possible. It kind of comes down to degree of difficulty!
You are a gentleman and a scholar, sir.
Edit: You are still a gentleman and a scholar, but that didn’t work for me. Gave me a place to start, at least, though. Thanks!
Perhaps you could take pity and offer just the tiniest fragment of a hint on how I might do such a marvelous thing?
In reply to: Achievements or other reward system?Really looking forward to the new Achievements. I’m launching a new Buddypress site for an existing forum I run that is based around gaming, and they’ll love having achievements within the community too! (Especially the obsessive types that spend way too much time getting every single TF2 and L4D2 achievement on Steam…)
In reply to: Advanced Search plugin neededIt’s something I want to do after I update another plugin.
Achievements?
*crosses fingers*
Follow-on question! On the BP install I’m currently working on, the following long list of plugins (all of which seem to be working flawlessly activated non-sitewide) do not even offer the option for Site-wide Activation.
Is there a reason (or reasons) for that? Is there any possible downside? Or are they fine the way they are?
BP Group Management, BuddyPress Album+, BuddyPress Forums Extras main plugin (but not sub-plugins), BuddyPress Like, BuddyPress Links, BuddyPress Profile Privacy, BuddyPress Rate Forum Posts, Custom Profile Filters for BuddyPress, Enhanced BuddyPress Widgets, External Group Blogs (written by Andy!), Invite Anyone, oEmbed for BuddyPress, Welcome Pack and WP-FB-AutoConnect.
