Definitely this last as well — Group wikis, excellent as it is, does this with its 8 or 10 CSS files and has been a (minor) headache to override for a dark theme I’m putting together.

For what it’s worth, the site that I’m currently working on (but may not end up) porting to Buddypress is basically a Vanilla forum with a bunch of stuff bolted on, and my 1000-or-so users would kill me if the forum model were not the centerpiece of any new home I put together, although they’re excited about all the shiny new toys that the socialnetworking hoohah can offer.

An activity stream is just that, a stream. Once something goes below the fold, it’s gone forever. It’s evanescent. It’s a nightclub.

A blog, even themed with P2 (which is basically where we got the activity stream from, right down to the ‘What’s new, username?’), is still a blog, and once a post-and-comment-thread is off the index page, it’s much less likely to be seen or engaged with by users (despite the fact that you can try and surface activity with new comments widgets in the sidebar and such). It’s a busy bar.

A forum and its threads are more static. New comments bump threads back to the top, so it is a place where people can continue to return to discussions. It’s the comfy chair at the pub with a newspaper.

Each model has its own purposes, and different sorts of sites will focus on different aspects, because they will all have different requirements and userbases.

But yeah, docflo and 3sixty are right about the ability to comment on a forum post activity item in the stream and not have the comment appear in the corresponding forum thread is counterintuitive. Rather than turn it off, I’ve edited the language files to change some of the verbiage associated with activity items to make it clearer that they are different actions. But I might end up turning it off entirely.

Thanks for the cleanup, mods. Apologies for being intemperate.

Although I must reserve the right to ask for help with the BBpress component of BP, for those in the know, in the future. From people who might be willing offer it. ;-)

Let me ask you though: what is the single most-used, most-trafficked, important element of this very site we’re on right now for most of us?

Hint: it’s this (relatively feature-poor) forum.

Different people have different needs, and the forum component of BBpress is an essential one for many users of BP. My thinking was that this thread could be about not just possible plugins for that area, but things that people would love to see in plugin form for any area of BP. I’ve tried over the last 6 or 8 months to give as much back to this community here by helping others as I’ve taken or solicited help from them. I’m not asking for help with BBpress. A wishlist is just that — nobody gives a good goddamn, mostly, but occasionally somebody plays the angel.

Thanks, Boone! You’re saving my life these days!

I’ve just tried Boone’s plugin that Dwenaus linked above, and after editing the template files as noted in the readme (more or less — the line numbers have changed, of course), it seems to work.

So far I can’t get inlining to work with uploaded image attachments, though, which was what I was aiming for. Bummer.

It may be an artifact of dev on a local xammp install maybe, because I’ve got URLs for the attachment icons like “http://localhost.localdomain/devsiteD:/xampp/htdocs/devsite/wp-content/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/icons/img.gif”, I’m not sure. Link for the ‘uploaded’ image is fine, just no inline….

Will investigate, in my semi- but mostly incompetent way.

I’d love to be able to extend Achievements for a new BP site I’m building for an established community site I run (as well as run it on the previous BP site I’ve used it on); basically we have a Member of The Week award that each holder nominates a new person for. It’d be great to be able to leverage Achievements for that, basically to allow me as admin to make arbitrary awards to users as well as the unlockable ones.

Waiting as always with bated breath for the new version!

    Congrats, r-a-y! Can’t say it’s a surprise — you’ve been a great help to us all.

Looks great! Did it take a lot of work getting Simplepress forums integrated? I’m running up against the limitations of bbpress out-of-the-box and it’s giving me some minor headaches.

Nice work, modemlooper. That’s gonna save me some time!

Looking forward to having a look, thanks! Love working with Thematic, even if the idea of a creating a theme that’s a child of two parents kinda breaks my brain. ;-)

Given the way these things work, why not just take the bp-events code and fork it, if it’s good enough? Seems like a waste to start from scratch. I’d do it, if I didn’t have 17 other things on my plate right now…

He means either a) install Buddypress with regular, non WPU version of WordPress, possible since BP1.2 or b) go into your Site Admin–>Admin–>Allow new registrations and disable it in the WPMU dashboard.

BP-TinyMCE wasn’t working on my install for posting updates directly from a user’s profile page. BP wasn’t finding any content in the textbox and giving a ‘please put some content in there, dummy’ message.

I seem to have fixed it by adding

    j("input#aw-whats-new-submit").unbind( 'click' );

on line 5 of bp-tinymce-js.js packaged with the plugin.

Edit: Well, it appears in some places and not in others, but works where it appears, at least.

It’s already here. BP1.2 runs on WP standard.

Custom URLs which will still disappear when the service providers disappear. ;-)

BuddyPress -> Component Setup–>Let users create, join and participate in groups would seem to be for disabling Groups entirely, so that’s not it.

Not sure what I had in mind, there. I wonder if you can hook Buddypress permissions into Justin Tadlock’s excellent Members plugin (http://justintadlock.com/archives/2009/09/17/members-wordpress-plugin)

Basically I’d just disallow Subscribers (if that’s your default role) from creating groups, but I’d have to go digging to figure out how to do that….

    I haven’t actually tried!

Thanks, Jehy, Just what I was looking for.

Forums are automatically created for Groups. Create a group, there’s a forum attached.

Just disallow ordinary users from creating groups, and you’re done.

But I’d argue that it is in fact very very pretty — it’s SEMANTIC. By reading the URL, you get an idea of the structure of the site and the nature of the page you’ll end up at. That’s exactly the optimal outcome!

Something like http://dum.as/Sx93ldlj434 (and equally, something like, say http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-10406015-82.html?tag=TOCmoreStories.0) tell you precisely nothing, and that is the height of ugliness.
