    @simoncreative: Just to clarify… I am NOT part of the bp-events team. I just made up that little template tag function on my own. So I don’t know for sure if it will make it into the trunk or not. Keep that in mind when updating bp-events. This is my own personal little “hack”. When I mentioned it to Erwin, he seemed to think that such a template tag function already exists. But I checked and double-checked and said function does not exist.

    Yup. Child theme changes only. Goes without saying (or should).

    Nice. Good to see someone do some real theme work (not just colors).

    Are you using bp-events? The latest trunk lists the directory view by date. Much better than by active. I also added a tiny function to bp-events-templatetags.php to display event dates in the directory. I imagine this will show up in the trunk eventually. Probably just an oversight not to have a site event start date function.

    function bp_the_site_event_date_start() {
    echo bp_get_the_site_event_date_start();
    }
    function bp_get_the_site_event_date_start() {
    global $site_events_template;

    return apply_filters('bp_get_the_site_event_date_start',
    date(('l M j - Y'), $site_events_template->event->date_start));
    }

    Of course, you could use whatever date format you like. I happen to like “l M j – Y”.

    In your directory loop you’d just use this to display:

    <?php bp_the_site_event_date_start() ?>

    Michael beat me to it. I think that’s a far better solution than duplicating the entire header.php file just to make one tiny change. Also, Google would give more weight to an h1 tag for your company name than an alt tag for your company name.

    I’m guessing that the best place for this kind of feedback is https://trac.buddypress.org/

    Use your buddypress.org login, click “new ticket” and select “enhancement” as the Ticket Type.

    I was just looking at the code and I’m not sure the id on the img tag actually serves any purpose. Or does it? Perhaps it could just be removed… in the name of W3C validation? I often come across this actually where an id will be used in a loop and end up creating multiple identical “unique” identifiers upon rendering the HTML page.

    @gaz: Yes, with the default theme you get a main navigation bar that focuses on BuddyPress features (Members, Groups, Forums). So in that sense, BuddyPress “takes over”. But there’s also the “Blog” link which links to your WPMU main blog. WPMU is nothing more than Posts and Pages. So it’s all still there.

    But yes, the main navigation is BuddyPress-focused when using the default theme. However, that is easily changed. Simply create a child theme with a custom header.php file. Your navigation could then be… Blog, About, Products, Contact, Customer Care… whatever you wish. Perhaps those BuddyPress links (Members, Groups, Forums) would be either in a separate navigation bar (like the bottom bar on Facebook) or maybe subsections of a “Community” menu. Or what have you. It’s all very do-able.

    Unfortunately… you are also correct that there are very few custom themes right now. And no purpose-specific themes. BuddyPress is too new. So your choices are to either a) roll up your sleeves and be prepared to do a ton of learning and research or b) hire someone.

    And Site Architecture is critical of course. It seems like you have a good idea of what you want to do but you’ve started out by taking a default BuddyPress install and working backwards from there. A good sanity check (if you haven’t already done so) is to sit down and sketch out exactly what you want… what sections… what navigation bars… what functionality… etc. Draw it all out (again, if you haven’t already). Then work from there.

    I think you’ve made the right choice. It’ll just require some work. WordPress and BuddyPress are so much more flexible and better supported than the other open source alternatives. It’s worth the effort.

    I thought it was funny that you said Boonex was “way out ahead” followed immediately by the comment “Boonex sucks”. LOL.

    I think you need to do some site architecture and wireframes first and then from there, do some custom theming. BuddyPress only appears to “take over” because the main navigation links to all of the BuddyPress directories. But you can make the main navigation whatever you want it to be… and you can make as many other navigation bars as you want as well… via custom theme work. Note than when you’re on a blog page, you’re not in a buddypress area… but the “main site” area.

    Also… with regards to highlighting your tabs… those links should all be getting classes assigned via WordPress which you can then hook into to style (i.e… something like .current_page)

    This site is a godsend for IE bug fixes http://www.positioniseverything.net/

    Also… in some case… you have no case but to support IE6. A lot of corporate networks for instance still use XP and as such still run older versions of certain web applications… some of which will only work properly on IE6. I know where I work (company of 3,500 people)… the entire company is forced to stick with IE6 because otherwise there is a lot of legacy software that will break. So all of my web development HAS to be IE6 friendly.

    If you’re not concerned about that… you may want to check this out too :)

    I agree… without looking at the code… I would guess it’s the double float margin bug. Try sticking “display: inline;” on any floated column that has a left margin set.

    How do you know it’s not reading those files? Did you try something obvious like changing a background color to something ugly like #cf0… just to make sure your IE6/7 tweaks are coming in in IE6/7?

    Oh… I agree! That’s what makes Twitter next to impossible sometimes. You see out-of-context replies all the time… and you have to try and check out the “walls” of the various people talking to each other try try and figure out what the conversation is even about. Facebook does a good job of this. Of course… you can also reply right inline too. Which is pretty darn cool. I’m happy with what BP does for now. But look forward to the future.

    I’m gonna check out that plugin now! Thanks r-a-y

    A quick look at the files reveals that screen.css is imported by style.css. There is no overriding going on.

    So I guess you were using a *modified* bp default :) Too bad… I do love tracking down IE rendering bugs (no… really… I do… it’s a problem).

    I’m not sure how Facebook connect works… but allowing sign up or not is simply another configuration setting. I think it’s under the WPMU settings menu.

    Yeah… it’s kind of like “I’ll have a bacon cheeseburger please. Hold the cheese and bacon”. LOL. Surely there must be a simpler way just to extend user profiles than installing BuddyPress and then disabling 95% of it?

    Well… without knowing what you’re trying to do or what changes you’re making… I can’t really comment. I modified the default theme… including layout changes… and I never had any problem with Safari / Chrome. I almost never have any problems with Safari / Chrome. It’s almost unheard of that I come across a rendering bug in Webkit.

    There’s no such thing as a simple adjustment in CSS. A 1px change can ‘blow up’ a layout very easily. Nothing wrong with the code provided in the default themes. It’s actually really solid.
