In reply to: How to: Bring the admin-message to the startpage
I think that’s an awesome idea too… for messages like “site will be down for maintenance on Wednesday” or whatever right on the homepage. I plan on using BuddyPress for our Regional Search & Rescue team… so it would be great… when a call goes out… to put the search information right on the homepage (for members only of course)… i.e. “All members please respond immediately to 123 Main Street… blah blah blah”.
So I looked into this. Just poked around in the /messages/ folder for a bit. Didn’t take long to find the required line of code. Try sticking this in your home.php file.
<?php bp_message_get_notices(); // (admin created site wide notices) ?>In reply to: Highly interactive theme. MooTools not compatible?Personally… I would just try to make it work with jQuery instead since WordPress already includes it… and then you won’t be using two JS Frameworks. I’m pretty sure that anything MooTools can do… jQuery can do.
In reply to: BP showcase – Lead us to waterThere’s nothing about BuddyPress that makes it difficult to theme. The only reason most sites don’t deviate much from the default theme right now is simply because BuddyPress is still in it’s infancy and the people making sites with it are probably mostly hobbyists without a ton of design/css/html/php skills. There’s nothing stopping anyone from making a theme that looks nothing at all like the default theme.
In reply to: Adding navigation buttons to the headerThe code to add depends on what links you want to add
Want to link to Apple?<li><a href="http://www.apple.com">Apple</a></li>want to list all your pages?
<?php wp_list_pages(); ?>want to hard code a link to a contact page (assuming the link is /contact/)
<li><a href="/contact/">Contact</a></li>etc.
Look in the header.php file and you will see all the links that are currently there.
In reply to: creating a new child theme : helpAhh. Perhaps it’s a path issue? Just for the heck of it… try a full path to that loop file… i.e. http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/……
That’s not a bad idea… just making an admin theme that looks more consistent with BuddyPress. Less jarring for newbies.
In reply to: Adding navigation buttons to the headerthe navigation links are located in header.php
In reply to: creating a new child theme : helpDumb question… but have you updated your permalinks?
In reply to: creating a new child theme : helpThe default child is nothing more than a stylesheet… essentially. And a bunch of icons. It may be just as much work either way. I’m not sure. I haven’t tried to adapt any existing WP themes. I just made a new theme based on the child. I didn’t change a whole lot though.
In reply to: how to totally disable User-Blogs ?You can disable user blog creation in WPMU but the BuddyPress directory page for “blogs” and the “blogs” link in the BuddyPress user profiles will still show up… unless you create your own templates to override the parent… or maybe just use some CSS (if possible) to hide those links.
Well… this doesn’t help… but really… as far as popular CMS tools go… the WordPress backend is about as easy and intuitive as it gets. I find most clients take to it pretty quickly and easily and end up loving it and using it a lot. Compare that to Joomla sites I’ve worked on where the clients end up abandoning the site because it take a computer science degree to wrap your head around it’s confusing interface and concepts. Again… I know that doesn’t really help you.
Have you looked at limiting user roles and screen options to streamline the WP backend? I always set clients up with something less than full admin privileges and turn off a bunch of screen options they won’t need or understand.
In reply to: creating a new child theme : helpWhy not start by copying the child theme that comes with BuddyPress and go from there?
In reply to: Overriding the themes function.php = blank pageFlynn… why not just register your extra widget areas in the child functions.php file? They should just be added to the already registered widget areas (sidebars) in the parent functions.php
p.s. As to the original poster… ya… what Paul said. Two functions with the same name = white page.
In reply to: Best way to let users upload images?bpPicture plugin
In reply to: Styling Activity CSS on profile pageI’m gonna say no… not without changing the template perhaps. Looking at the CSS for the activity feed on profile pages… blog posts and blog comments have exactly the same class (li.blogs). With the default template, it’s not possible to make a unique CSS selector for a new post vs. a new comment.
In reply to: How to Change the Text Font?I believe the font settings are all in the font css files. Logical enough
The default theme uses the 12px sheet.
In reply to: How to add custom $usermeta to registrationI’m gonna say no. This plugin is for adding metadata. Captcha and form validation is a different animal.
In reply to: Parent/Child themeAre you asking how to use parent and child themes in 1.1? The readme is very clear on this but simply place both themes (parent and child) in wp-content/themes/. Activate the child… not the parent. The themes can be found in bp-themes in the BuddyPress download. Just move the contents of that folder (the parent and child theme) to wp-content/themes.
In reply to: Events missing icon / css?also
#events-notification-settings th.icon {background: url(../images/calendar.png) center no-repeat;}In reply to: Maximum pm's with statusbar?I’ve submitted an enhancement ticket for BuddyPress version 2,389, 493.1 beta. Time Machine please! Must be capable or bi-directional time travel. Come on guys… every other CMS has one.
In reply to: Can you remove "notify all" option from group wires?Well… I think this particular feature is fine as is… but that’s good to know in any case.
In reply to: Can you remove "notify all" option from group wires?I think it’s a great feature and should be available to everyone… but perhaps should have more messaging around it and/or made an option that an admin can disable. Personally… in my case… this feature would be invaluable and it would need to be available to everyone. It all depends on the nature of the group. For a giant group… maybe you don’t want it. But let’s say you form a group that is a small collection of committee members using the wire to talk about ideas or what have you… in that case… the mass notify is great. Also… users who get annoyed with these kinds of notifications always have the option to turn them off!
In reply to: Can you remove "notify all" option from group wires?Very cool Jobjorn.
Just wondering however if this ultra-low-tech solution would also do the trick?
#wire-email-notify {display: none;}In reply to: Forum at front page?Cool! Thx
In reply to: Forum at front page?Ooooo… I like the idea of a homepage widget for latest forum posts. How hard could that be? The logic should all be in the forum index. Of course… the activity feed kinda takes care of that too… especially now with the super cool filtering feature. But a separate widget for latest post might still be nice.
