In reply to: adding content to the 1.2 default theme homepage
Hey Windhamdavid,
Thanks so much. Sorry for the frustration. I posted that after 2.5 hours of porting hell. Turns out my server is running PHP 5.2.x and I developed locally in 5.3… and I had a function that 5.2 did not support. 2 hours in SSH trying to update PHP before giving in and contacting tech support. Argh! THEN… I found out my /blog/ link stopped working. Double argh!! LOL :o)
Anyway… my theme uses home.php for the homepage and index.php for /blog/. It worked great until the latest trunk.
So perhaps this can be fixed using a custom slug? That would be fantastic. Thanks so much!!! I’ll look into that. Never added a custom slug before.
The situation is that I need a homepage loop (home.php) that only shows a subset of posts as well as a full loop with a paginated result set of ALL posts… what would normally be your homepage (index.php… aka /blog/).
To explain… it’s a magazine site. All posts belong to an “issue” and will be tagged as such using a custom taxonomy that I registered in functions.php. So my homepage loop uses a custom query to output only the posts from the most recently added issue.
So that’s the homepage. Then there’s an “Archived Articles” link at the bottom of the page that uses index.php with the standard paginated homepage loop so that you can step back in time. It’s just a link to /blog/.
Anyway… I’ll look into that config file solution!!! Thanks!!!
In reply to: adding content to the 1.2 default theme homepageSorry. I’m frustrated beyond belief at the moment. Deadline tomorrow. Broken site.
Question
Does the change mentioned in this thread remove support from the WordPress template hierarchy for using BOTH a home.php (standard template that’s part of the WordPress hierarchy) and an index.php file? Because I require both.
In reply to: adding content to the 1.2 default theme homepageHow come http://www.mysite.com/blog/ doesn’t work anymore? (404). It used to use my index.php template while home.php was my homepage. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In reply to: adding content to the 1.2 default theme homepageI read a commit comment in trac that the classic theme was moved to the backwards compatibility plugin.
In reply to: Should BP give point releases a name?Ooooooooo…. the 80’s. How about John Hughes movie titles? 1.2 could be called Sixteen Candles. LOL.
In reply to: American Idol fan site using BuddyPress 1.2Very nice job. Server is so slow though.
In reply to: Buddypress straplineAgreed.
In reply to: Buddypress straplineYou could always use some simple javascript obfuscation too. Not foolproof, but better than nothing.
In reply to: Buddypress straplineSo don’t link it.
CSS would work too if you want to override everything manually… but you might need to add !important to the declaration. I just did it in a function since my client will want to change the header image themselves from time to time and the custom header application would force them to crop anything they try to upload that is taller than 125.
So all I did was change the height definition (line 117 in bp-themes/bp-default/functions.php) by adding a functions.php file to my child with just one line:
define( 'HEADER_IMAGE_HEIGHT', 250 );Seems to work.
Would be nice with the header API if the height was not restricted. I ended up adding a line to functions.php in my child to allows for a taller header.
Finally signed up. Just a few very minor things…
1. The jump down links should jump down to the headers… not the content below the headers (confusing).
2. The pages switching from a side list to a horizontal list is very confusing. I kept thinking that those page names (Edit: Admin) were action links. I think I’d just kill the document list completely once in a doc. You can always hit the back button.
3. The excepts on the summary page are far too long. I would enforced it to being a sentence or two.
A plain WordPress theme won’t have any of the necessary template tags and loops and such to display your BuddyPress content. So you have to either add the functionality and templates your need to your current WordPress theme *or* use the BuddyPress default theme and rework it (via a child preferable) to make it look like your current theme.
In reply to: Spam, Spam and more spam@guristu Right… but can bots submit drop down values? For instance, I have a drop down for “Training Level” which is a required field. If it’s left at “please select”… the form will return a required field error.
In reply to: Spam, Spam and more spamWould adding a required custom field help too? Something that a ‘bot would not know about?
In reply to: How To: Building BuddyPress 1.2 ThemesI’m a colossal idiot. LOL. I hadn’t reactivated BuddyPress after updating. Hahahaha. Sorry. Don’t mind me.
In reply to: How To: Building BuddyPress 1.2 Themesp.s. The themes don’t even show up in “Site Admin > Themes”. Only the three themes that come with WPMU show up.
In reply to: How To: Building BuddyPress 1.2 ThemesOkay… when I try this new way of leaving the themes in the plugin folder… my child themes now give me an error saying “The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.” and “Template is missing”.
Do you have to reference “Template: bp-default” differently from a child theme? With a full path perhaps? How does WordPress “know” about those themes inside the BuddyPress folder? I’m at a loss I’m afraid. And I’ve followed the instructions on the “building-a-buddypress-child-theme page” to the letter.
In reply to: How To: Building BuddyPress 1.2 ThemesIt’s beta now?! Whoa! And I see now this happened 2 days ago
I’m outta the loop! That’s what I get for bookmarking the forums and bypassing the homepage all the time
In reply to: Keep default bp theme but change main colorsBy the way… I don’t suppose you are on a Mac… but if you are… CSSEdit is far better than Firebug for inspecting and creating CSS. It’s actually a full-blown editor but with Firebug style “inspectors” and “x-ray” views. I couldn’t live without it. It’s almost worth switching for if you’re a web guy working on PC!! I love it.
Firebug is very useful though. Great utility.
In reply to: Keep default bp theme but change main colorsPersonally… I would go one step further and NOT make a copy of the css file from the default. I would just create a new custom.css file in the child and override individual declarations as needed. That way your theme should be more future-proof if the default theme ever gets updated. If all you want to do is override a few colors… you could probably do it in just a few lines of CSS code in child-theme/_inc/css/custom.css. You would have to import this new sheet from child-theme/styles.css. i.e.
/*
Template: bp-default
*/
/* Parent styles */
@import url( ../bp-default/_inc/css/adminbar.css );
@import url( ../bp-default/_inc/css/default.css );
/* Custom styles */
@import url( _inc/css/custom.css);In reply to: Forums not showing up after trunk updateThere is a “forums” folder in the BuddyPress plugin. Within that folder should be a bbpress folder. The trunk version does not include the bbpress folder. So if you overwrote your entire BuddyPress folder (or forums folder)… you would no longer have bbpress installed. If that’s the case, just download it and dump the folder in /plugins/buddypress/forums/
@D. Sorry… crazy busy with freelance work at the moment.
In reply to: Create groups in 1.2I think it’s much more intuitive now actually. For users anyway.
In reply to: Privacy ?Speaking of trolls… an ignore plugin for bbPress would be a good thing to have. I found one… but it’s quite old (last update in 2007).
