Yeah – I’m back… meh……
Has anyone installed bbpress 1.0 from scratch and got group discussions to work? After another 20 or 30 installs, I’ve decided that there’s gotta be something in alpha 6 that buddypress is looking for. Something that bbpress 1 doesn’t have. I say this because I can get all of this stuff to work together but ONLY if I upgrade from alpha 6. I don’t dare try the RC versions.
When doing the upgrade, the database is updated & gives the following info
Beginning upgrade…
>>> Modifying database: monday3 (localhost)
>>>>>> Table: bb_term_taxonomy
>>>>>>>>> Adding index: taxonomy
>>>>>>>>>>>> Done
Making plugin directory at C:\wamp\www\monday3\forums/my-plugins/: bb_upgrade_1110
Making theme directory at C:\wamp\www\monday3\forums/my-templates/: bb_upgrade_1120Is it something in that update that does it or is there a specific file that’s left over from alpha 6 that has data that buddypress needs? It seems like if I delete the forum files & then upload the new version’s files, it still doesn’t work. But if I just rename the bb-config file & do an overwrite, the upgrade works fine.
I’m gonna go ahead and mark this as resolved because basically, I give up. I went back to my working install (where I successfully made 5 groups) and now discussions are disabled again. No changes were made, it just decided it didn’t want to work anymore. So for now, I shall accept defeat. 3 days solid is enough for me.
I created a new blog called test – the link went to http://localhost.localdomain/monday/test/ so it seems to be working okay for me.
I managed to get that error again. Turns out I forgot to enable buddypress in the plugins. LOL Duh!!! Maybe this mistake will help others.
Yay – and back to Boo!!! Why the heck won’t this stuff install fresh?
Recap — I upgraded from bbpress alpha 6 to bbpress 1 – all works
Upgraded from BP1 to BP1.0.2 and all works
But now, (fresh install) I install bbpress 1 & BP1.0.2 and discussion just refuse to work.
I checked both config files vs the working install & everything matches up.
Checked all xml settings and they’re on.
Checked all forums settings pages & they match with the working install.
The only plugins on the working install are BP and bbpress-integration. Same on non-working fresh install.
Could there be a file missing from one of the installs that would remain during an upgrade but wouldn’t be there if I’m installing fresh? (I’m not this stupid dangit lol It shouldn’t be this hard)
As always, thank you for your help.
My themes at TheEasyButton only have 2 columns.
Yes r-a-y. I’ve done that. Tried bp1.0.1 also. I’ve seriously tried like every combo I can think of. I shall return with news of new installs. LOL
Alright — I now have the most recent version of everything running via upgrading from bp1 & from bbpress alpha 6. So that means it does work on my computer & now I have all of the settings. Now to see if I can get it to all install fresh. *sigh*
Update — Used localhost.localdomain when installing wpmu. I’m now running BuddyPress 1.0 & bbPress 1.0 Integration is perfect & group discussion is enabled.
As stated in my first post, whenever I go to BuddyPress 1.0.2, everything goes all stupid with group discussion. Automatic upgrade won’t work for me so am I just suppose to overwrite the buddypress folder with the new version? Thanks for all of your help!!
I’ll try a new install with localhost.localdomain. Anything I’ve ever tried in the wpmu setup other than 127.0.0.1 didn’t work. Thanks r-a-y
If you made no changes & a call to your webhost fixed it, I’d say they did some changes to the server that made everything go crazy. Then when you called & they realized what happened, they fixed it.
But…. YAY!! lol So glad to see you’re back up and running correctly.
I’ll be watching for your reply.
Can anyone fix this for running on localhost – I know these settings are wrong but it’s what the bbpress integration plugin kicks out. It’s all in a directory called monday (as I’m sure you can tell)
define( 'COOKIEHASH', '519146fcc733b211cc72c7312b84bd28' );
define( 'COOKIE_DOMAIN', '.127.0.0.1' );
define( 'SITECOOKIEPATH', '/monday/' );
define( 'ADMIN_COOKIE_PATH', '/monday' );
define( 'COOKIEPATH', '/monday/' );Those are in the member theme. You’ll find them in the directories folder. There should be a folder for each of the links you mention.
On that particular install, all I did was remove everything from the bbPress folder except the bp-config. Then I pasted everything from the new version of bbPress in there and it just went crazy. LOL It started off with a wp-header error which I figured out & fixed (can’t remember how) but then this error came up about not being able to open the core signup page so I just started over.
Did you recently upgrade bbPress? That was the exact error I got the other day when doing the bbPress upgrade. It made absolutely zero sense to me because the file was obviously there. It also deleted all abilities to see plugins & BuddyPress in admin. I know you said you didn’t do any upgrades or tweaks but maybe this one didn’t come to mind.
Would I be a pain in the butt if I asked someone to post all of the extras that were placed in wp-config & bb-config. Also a list of plugins that are enabled would be dandy.
I seriously don’t know what the deal is but I just can’t get anything above BP 1.0 to work. I’ve tried on WAMP and GoDaddy (stop laughing) and it’s just not working. I’ve tried every combination of cookie codes & defines that I could find & plugins & bbPress versions. I kid you not, I have at least 20 installs & 500 groups created. It’s sad really. LOL
Also, you can email the codes to admin at theeasybutton dot com if that works better for you.
Again, I appreciate any help that all ya’ll can and have offered.
Sorry about that – You didn’t mention what version of bbPress you were using and I assumed that since you were in an old post, you were using the old version. I’m working on a tutorial (or will be the second I get this sucker to work) My suggestion at this moment would be to follow my tutorial for installing the alpha 6 version. And then upgrade it using r-a-y’s instructions at this post. I know it’s not the greatest answer but for now, it’s all I can personally offer. Hopefully someone will have a tutorial up shortly. LOL
Thanks for your response Burt. I tried and tried all day yesterday to get this sucker to work. I swear I’m missing something obvious. Discussions absolutely refuse to be enabled. And I did check out the plugin info you linked to. I checked my phpinfo & am running everything that was suggested (but installed & tried the plugin anyways lol) so that must not be the problem.
At one point, I totally crashed WPMU and had some strange wp-header errors kicking out. That was quite a feat.
I guess my next step will be to try r-a-y’s instructions & hopefully the upgrade will work & I’ll be able to see what the deal is that I can’t just install from scratch. My head is starting to hurt from all the head vs desk slamming I’ve got going on. *laughs* I shall not be defeated!!!
TY to everyone that’s offered help.
Much appreciated!!
Larsg, the buddypress plugin can be found in
wp-content>>plugins>>buddypress>>bp-forums>>bbpress-plugins
It needs to be moved but the location depends on your version of bbpress. Assuming you renamed bbpress to forums, you have 2 options:
forums>>my-plugins>>buddypress-enable.php
forums>>bb-plugins>>buddypress-enable.php
If 1 location doesn’t work & you try it in a 2nd location, remember to MOVE it. Having it in more than 1 location can make the wrong file be activated. Also, if you move it, you will have to reactivate it.
I have a couple of questions because I still can’t get my discussion to activate in groups. Integration is fine, but that dang “you must configure forums” warning won’t go away no matter what combination of codes & plugins I use.
1. “Upgrade to bbpress 1.0”
Upgrade from what? I’ve never been able to get an RC version to work so I’m running alpha 6.
2. By upgrade, do you mean install the new version or should I find an upgrade button somewhere? (not seeing one on alpha 6)
3. Buddypress enable plugin (from buddpress>>bp-forums)
Where did you put this? In my-plugins or bb-plugins or nowhere?
4. “Go into bbpress admin and the wordpress integration settings. Fill out the forms properly”
Anytime I EVER EVER (haha) try to change stuff in there, it totally boots me out of all of the bbpress logins. No login name/pw will work.
That’s it for now but I’ll probably be back with more questions.

**Edit — #5 (told ya I’d be back) Did you put the “allow user switching” code at the bottom of the bb-config?
Thanks
JJJ Are you having any luck??
And can anyone explain what this function is looking at? It’s in bp-group-templatetags.php and reads “bp_forums_is_installed_correctly” That’s where I’m having issues. I can’t get discussion enabled because BP thinks the forums aren’t correctly installed.
I don’t know if I’m just THAT tired or what, but trying to trace it to what it’s looking for is like reading Japanese.
Thanks

Edit to add the function to hopefully make this question easier to answer
function bp_forums_is_installed_correctly() {
global $bbpress_live;
if ( !is_object( $bbpress_live ) ) {
include_once( ABSPATH . WPINC . '/class-IXR.php' );
$bbpress_live = new bbPress_Live();
}
if ( !$bbpress_live->fetch->endpoint )
return false;
return true;
}Here we go again. *bangs head on desk* Integration perfect & the dang thing doesn’t want to enable discussion.
Oh good grief!!! What the heck is wrong with me? Time to go hide in shame in the corner. LOL Thanks Jeff!!!
*shakes her head at herself*
Marking as resolved
Problem resolved. Not really sure how. Apparently the buddypress elves fixed it while we slept. It just decided to start working today. Maybe the server owners did some configuring that made it work. Anyways, yay & topic marked as resolved..
Thanks JJJ & Burt for your responses.
Burt, you said “Unless you are generating the value of $var in the template itself….” Basically, what I was doing, and sorry I didn’t include this in my code, was
<?php
$var = 5;
if ( bp_has_site_members( 'type=active&max=$var' ) ) : ?>I was doing it the most simple way I could think of just to see if it would work first but that number as a variable was killing me.
Should I look at $foo’s or is that not the right solution? Thanks again.
Thanks JJJ – I think with that information, maybe I’ll just stay away from all of the RC versions & just stick with what I know works.
