Re: parenthesis – on a member’s profile, by default it will show the member’s display name followed by the @username.
eg. John Smith @johnsmith-
So, in my mind, it’s not necessary. Of course, you can always change this by altering your theme.

WP 3.0 Single User & BP 1.2.5 (just noticed this now, not sure if it’s new or a remnant from 1.2.4.) I took this directly from a site of mine. It’s the text that appears when you click on the blue @username question mark button on a user profile: @dpasian is a unique identifier for wforrest […]

Why not just leave it on the notification page? So far, you haven’t removed the functionality. You’ve just removed the navigation to see some of that functionality. So, if someone does the @username they’re going to get a notification unless you disable that also. Plus, not many people are going to look at the notifications page […]

I’m new to buddypress and just tried using an @mention on my website for the first time. Typing @username creates a link to that members page but does not alert them via email, or message in their activity feed that they have been mentioned. I am using the ‘BuddyPress Usernames Only’ plugin to help simplify the […]

oafh started the forum topic How to change @username to something less generic like {@username} for mentions in the group Creating & Extending: 14 years, 6 months ago
On my site having @username for mentions is not working because my site is getting it confused with email text. I’m trying to come up with someway of customizing the @username to something more specific like brackets. for example @username –> @username} I’d rather not alter the code, is there someway of doing this on a plugin or theme […]

I think he still wants the ability to tag people in posts, just not have to use the @username method. Basically a more semantic method… which is kind of like asking for the moon. I think it can be done, it’d just be a huge pain to code.

That worked perfectly! I may be in the minority here, but I think this makes a lot of sense. It gives a logical place to actually show your real name and avoids the duplication of having username @username at the top of the profile page.

Sometimes the filter options of the activity stream make no sense.
Example: filtering by “New Groups” in “@username mentions”
Is there a way to change this?

When someone uses the @username are you supposed to get a notification because you don’t. It says you do when you click on the ? next to the @username on someones profile but you only get it appearing under the @mentions. It would be good to get a notification wouldn’t it? With regards to names, their should […]

@rossagrant Yes i’m the same… this username Vs name thing is really annoying. I posted the same message a few days ago, hopefully someone will give us an answer. Also, I think that when you reply to someone, it should automatically fill in the @username of the person. (like i did at the beginning of this reply […]

Possible bug?: When on a displayed user’s profile page the “personal” tab shows all mentions of the user NOT just that user’s activity, this can be verified by clicking @username mentions a few links to the right.
bp-default does not duplicate this issue so I am guessing it found its way in via bp.org customization
