    Trent, I don’t think it is the first reason, as I am using the buddypress-member theme, just not the home theme.

    Could be the second. I’ll try what you said later and let you know. Thanks!

    Trent,

    I’ve been meaning to ask you about those.

    On the first: force-member-login. Since I’ve been using my own theme, it doesn’t work. This is the error I get:

    Not Found
    You tried going to http://my-site.net/register, and it doesn't exist. All is not lost! You can search for what you're looking for.

    And with the second: force-login. My forums are still accessible. Well, hang on. I am not using the group forums anymore. So it is my actual forums installation that is still accessible. Perhaps your plugin won’t work for this application?

    I take it you don’t have time right now to help me, so I can wait until you have time. This is not urgent.

    Yes, I agree.

    Nicola, I don’t need help with that part. Got that figured out. ;) See, I don’t want to use the group forums at all. I just want a general forum. So I installed it at /forums and I integrated it. My question was if css styling/adding page navigation was my best bet for making it “look” integrated. I think the answer is “yes”.

    Burt, I hear ya. I need a forum to take over for a currently vibrant and active Invision Power Board installation. I and the other admins are so used to all the features, privacy, levels of privacy, user moderation, terms of service, etc. that bbPress seems lacking. Simple:press delivers on some of those things, but I’m not happy with the cluttered, busy look of it.

    But, this decision does not just come down to styling. I think I’ve managed to make my forums (bbPress) look just like my main site (though could use the BuddyBar there :D ). It is more the features that I need right now.

    I am leaning toward going with bbPress and working on/waiting for those features. But I’m not sure.

    Thanks for the input.

    Let me ask you another question? When I log in on my main site, then go to my forums, it does not show me as logged in. However, if I do a Ctrl-F5 complete refresh, then I am logged in. So is this a cache issue? Do you know how I can fix it?

    Mike, have you created a page called “Members”? Try that and see if your Page Not Found error goes away. I had to do this when using my own theme instead of the BP home theme. I had to do it for Groups and Blogs, too.

    Here is the plugin to moderate new blogs: http://wpmudev.org/project/Moderate-New-Blogs

    But I don’t believe there is one to moderate new users. There is a hack for WPMU that does not work for BP because BP overrides WPMUs registration/activation process. I am working on trying to do the hack to BP… but it is not working so far.

    I would like to have a private network also. I don’t want the main site to be private, but I want all the members, groups (if I use them), forums, wire activity, etc. to be private.

    Regarding the blog privacy, if you set the user blogs to anything but option #1 (google-able), then the blogs don’t show up in BP “blogs” list. I think there needs to be something in the middle here — ie. no search engines can find the blogs, yet members can view the blog lists and browse the blogs.

    Here are my easier solutions. :D Only easier because I’m not as technical as Burt.

    1) You can replace that image with your own. Call it the same name and be prepared to reupload it everytime you upgrade.

    2) I was going to say edit custom.css, but I just tested it. It doesn’t work. Burt, you were right.

    Burt, this is the first time you yelled at me. :D

    At least I know I’m doing the only option available to me at this point.

    But… I was looking at Simple:Press the other day. http://simplepressforum.com/ It loads in a WP page and has more permissions/admin capabilities. Because it works as a WP plugin, the BuddyBar is in use there. In addition, because it is a plugin, you retain your regular sidebar/theme without having to do any tweaks — no making a separate forum installation “look” like it is the same.

    I don’t know, looks pretty good. I set it up and everything and it worked fine in WPMU. Then I went back to bbPress. Was that stupid? The reason being that I’m worried that BP will support a general forum with bbPress one day and I want to stay in the loop if so, not wander off on another trail.

    Any thoughts?

    If you come up with anything, let me know, please?

    Hey, the ‘buddybar’ is a great name. It stuck with me after I first heard/read you using it.

    Merry Christmas to you, Burt! This is awesome. Thank you so much. I have more questions to post but will wait for another day.

    Actually, it sounds to me like WPMU isn’t set up right. If you’re not getting the subdomains to work, then you need to start there. Look at the other thread at that link I posted.

    @wardeh

    It would attach your name to every account if you’re still logged in, right? Log out and then add your test users.

    Now the new users would be admins of their own blog.

    I’m at a loss Eric. I’m sorry.

    @wardeh

    Have you enabled wildcard subdomains such as in this post (linked to from bp docs)

    I don’t know why new users would be admin? That is not right, they should be subscribers or have no role. Even so, you can click on their name under Authors & Users and edit their role.

    You can add your name to the wp-admin area by going to Site Admin > Options and typing your username (the one for loggin in) in the field: site admins.

    As for the blog being created, did you do it in “Blogs” not “Users” of the Site Admin area?

    @wardeh

    Participant

    Maybe there has to be a minimum number of members for it to work.

    Why don’t you add a few more users and then test the alphabet and the search.

    @wardeh

    Participant

    #1-#2 Something is amiss. Should be working. Both the alphabet and search work on my installation. Try reinstalling the bp files, including themes. Save your changes beforehand! Do you have other plugins installed that could be interfering?

    #3 probably related to above

    Sorry I can’t help more…

    @wardeh

    Participant

    #4 they have to be a user on the main blog in order to have a member profile, etc… their role is either “subscriber” or “no role for this blog” (can’t remember which) but it doesn’t mean they’re an administrator, just a member and signed in to post around and browse around, etc.

    @wardeh

    Participant

    Are you using your own theme or the buddypress-home theme?

    @wardeh

    Participant

    I would think it would be in mu-plugins also, but that doesn’t mean I could get it to show on the profile pages. ;)

    @wardeh

    Participant

    In mu-plugins, these are plugins that help your WPMU site administration/installation. You won’t find them in the Plugins list. Most likely they’ll have areas in Site Admin.

    The wp-content/plugins are for use by the blogs on your network. Here’s where you’d put wp-stats, akismet, and most of the plugins from https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins.

    Here’s how I think of it: if it helps me run WPMU, it goes in mu-plugins. If it helps me or a member blog, it goes in wp-content/plugins.

    Everything in wp-content/plugins shows up in Plugins for activation/deactivation.

    In buddypress-home > css, rename the custom-sample.css as custom.css.

    Then add these lines to it and save:

    body {

    background:#000000;

    color:#FFFFFF;

    }

    .widget ul.item-list li, .activity-list {

    background:#000000;

    }

    .activity-list li blockquote {

    background:#000000;

    }

    .activity-list {

    border:none;

    }

    Some other thing may need changing, too; I don’t know what you want. All the widget titles have background colors. Also the link color might not be what you want.

    For the header fill in your amount of pixels and the name of your logo file (put it in buddypress-home > images).

    #header h1 {

    background:transparent url(../images/your-logo.gif) no-repeat scroll left top;

    height:–px;

    width:–px;

    }

    You’ll have to do the same with buddypress-member > css. Rename custom-sample.css to custom.css and add the header bit, as well as any color changes.

    Who knows what else may come up. Post if you need help with anything else.

    There is a WPMU plugin, which asks the user to agree to terms of service on first login (not during registration): http://wpmu.org/terms/

    I have added a Terms of Service page to my site. Then I added this statement/question (required) to the Basic Profile: “I agree to the Network Guidelines”. There are two radio buttons (yes and no) and “Network Guidelines” is linked to the page which details them.

    Oh, I see. Thanks.

    Ideally, not using bp-groups will disable groups (take it out of mu-plugins). Not sure if the other components are dependent on it anymore. At one point, Andy was recommending we use all of them. I think since he’s released the Beta that they will work independently.

    If you want to integrate bbPress with WPMU, the best place to get info on that is at bbpress.org.

    @wardeh

    Thanks, Trent.

    Now that there are betas of all the individual components, I am not updating as frequently. How do I know when to upgrade?
