Adding conditions during signup for BP users

Hi all!
I started learning BP recently from the developer’s point of view. I am planning to add profile fields during sign up process that are added depending on the previous user choices. For example, if user chooses whether he/she reads books or not, either the question “choose your favorite book genre from the list” or “What do you do then if not reading?” appears dynamically. But all fields in sign up process are static.
What would be the best strategy to add this functionality using plugins? I am relatively new to concepts of plugins and hooks ( only did simple examples ) but I am sure I can start doing well once I know WHERE to start ( maybe give me specific actions, filters or whatever ). The documentation at http://codex.buddypress.org seems very vague to me and lacks consistency.
