BP1.2+ Plugin Wishlists

I thought it might be useful to our many plugin developers if we had a thread where we could talk about our dream plugins, and if someone wanted to develop something, they’d know there was a demand already.

I’ll start: I find that the greatest gaps in functionality for the new site I’m putting together is in the integrated BBpress forums. Many BBpress plugins could presumably be ported to BP, but that’s beyond my limited skills at this point.

So, some plugins I’d love to see

    • Forum Inline image attachments
    • Forum quoting (with cite)
    • Forum whispers (basically private messages inline in forum threads, like Vanilla, visible only to sender and sendee)
    • Some buttons for basic formatting on textareas (like TinyMCE, but simplish)

I know Boone is looking at a couple of these, I think, and there are some other plugins like Events and Achievements that I’m waiting for with much excitement on 1.2.

That’s a wishlist start, for me, anyway. What BP plugins, extending forums or otherwise, are on your wishlist?

    @Ted Mann

    Head on over to buddydev.com.

Brajesh just released a bunch of free plugins.

    Download the CB-Addons plugin.

The old sitewide activity widget will be available, along with a couple of other widgets.

    Thanks, @r-a-y

I hadn’t checked out buddydev.com in a while. I like how the cb-addons allows you to get back the old sitewide stream. What I was truly hoping for, though, is a way to widgetize the interactive 1.2 activity stream, complete with the ability to post status updates. In my idea use for this, I’d want to add a group activity stream widget onto a blog. Haven’t dug into the code yet to see how difficult it would be to transplant the groups activity streams into a widget form, but I’m hopeful it’ll be something that we’ll be able to build out one day soon.

Ted – just a little tip. In my experience it can be tricky to make BP widgets work on blogs other than the BP root blog, at least when they involve AJAX. WP doesn’t accept ajax requests from other domains, which includes things like subdomains (eg example.com won’t accept an ajax request from cool.example.com). My workaround has been to manually generate the ajaxurl rather than depending on the one autogenerated by wp. One of these days I will get around to posting the workaround on my blog – but hopefully this will get you started in the right direction.

Here’s my most desired plugin idea at the moment. It is basically a copy of something already done to a degree on facebook.

Something like a relationships indicator. Say for example I have a friend on my Buddypress install but this friend also just so happens to be my girlfriend. It would be nice if I could set that relationship up.

What I’m thinking is that the plugin could come with some default relationships E.G.: mother, father, son, daughter, cousin, aunt, uncle, wife, husband, co-worker and so on…but also the ability to add a custom relationship. E.G. if I could list a friend as a audio co-host. Friend would be the default level so that a user wouldn’t have to go through and define the relationship between themselves and every single one of their friends.

The ability to notify a user that a definition had been assigned to our relationship so that they could confirm would also be nice. E.G. I identify userX as my girlfriend and she gets an email notice of that and has to confirm the relationship at which point is reflected in both of our profiles or friends areas.

Displaying this information could be done in a number of different ways and regulating who can see these relationships E.G. everyone, friends only, specific individual, private. It could be a separate section under either friends or profile. It would be nice though if say all of my siblings were listed along side each other, all my cousins were grouped together and so on.

I love this thread. There should be a way to vote on these. I’ll add my “votes” as text here:

    1. Forum plugins – Every key bbpress plugin should be ported to buddypress. rich! has done some amazing work with forum extras and I hope he continues.

    2. Events – was a really nice emerging implementation of that in progress, but I haven’t seen much on it lately; I think it “broke” at one point due to BP version incompatibilities.

    3. Privacy, of course.

Not a request for a plugin … but can we just have back all the BBpress features and admin tools that were disabled first?
