Complete Newbie Migrating from Ning

  • Hello! I am a Ning refugee looking for a new way to design a social networking site. As you can also imagine, I am also a complete newbie to web design in general, and need some help.

I don’t know html, css or any of the other coding languages that seem necessary for doing this right. I also have no idea how to go about selecting web hosting for the website I want to build. I have been looking into spruz as a Ning alternative, but I cannot get it to display content like I would like and therefore am considering simply paying for a website IF I can customize it effectively and make it look great. So, I think I need to know how to use WordPress. More specifically, BuddyPress looks like what I’ll need. And I have no idea where to start. It seems that first of all I need to get hosting, unless I can get BuddyPress to work with Spruz?

Where to begin? Tall order I know, but we all have to start somewhere! Thanks to anyone who even has the courage to look at this post :D

I would suggest test WordPress/WordPressMU with BuddyPress out of the box at http://testbp.org/ (except header image which was added by Andy). Same username and password as you used in this site.

Hey Robin! I also migrated from Ning to Buddypress. You will find the forum participants/moderators here to be quite responsive and informative. In fact, I have received hints from generous forum moderators that were very helpful in getting my blog setup. Basically, any question you search for on google with regard to setting up wordpress/ buddypress many times will point to this site. You will find that other people have asked similar questions and received answers from those who already know how to do it.

If you can get someone to help you set up a wordpress blog/website, then you can become accustomed to the admin control panel for wordpress. From there you can install the buddypress plugin and get your social network up and running. Ning webmasters still have till July to move it or lose it, so you have time to learn the wordpress/buddypress stuff.

Like I said I can help. If you go to spruz I can still help as Im a master of BOTH!

I am also a NING refugee. I have done something a bit different. I have … before I migrate to any site, I am joining it, finding out the (service, response time, benefits , design capabilities, expansive capabilities, embed features of widgets, etc…) before I migrate any of my 500+ members to any of the sites.
I figure, out of the 15 + sites there will be only 1 or 2 that will care enough to walk me through a process and discuss the benefits of why their site is the place to bring people to.
Here is what I have: 2+ years ago, I started a network on NING called “Othello Club”. This is the best run othello community out there. It took thousands and thousands of hours from myself and my other admins to make it right. Then just as we were settling in a groove,….NING desides to charge for membership. My members will NOT pay a dime for this. I certainly am not going to foot the bil without retrobution. SO,… I was put in a situation like many NINGites, and have to search all over.
I started a place a year ago from Socialgo….too many limitations. I have a place on hold at 5 other places until I figure out where I can move our members to with the LEAST amount of distress.
Here is the current URL: http://othelloclub.ning.com
This will give anyone willing to assist me an idea of how far we’ve advanced. My other admin does the designing…I just complain if she merely makes it look like a newspaper page…hehehe (she’s wonderful, don’t me wrong).
I don’t know if this site offers creativity in that department…and that is important to me.
We also have java othello applets and don’t know if this site can support this either.

If you have knowledge on this site, and you think this site would not only support our 500+ members, (~25 new members monthly), please let me know.

    Giovanni L. Barricelli (othello club)

Can anyone help me figure out why I’m getting a skipping error on the ning to buddypress importer. The developer says because the forum topic may not be associated with a category or group? Does that mean in Ning, all topics must be assigned to a category or group to come over to BuddyPress?

    All:

Please note that your Ning export may be corrupted. Your LOCAL JSON file should be the same size as its sister file. According to Boone Gorges, the creator of the Ning to BuddyPress Importer, you can rename your -non-local file to LOCAL, as all the content in both should relatively be the same, with the following caveat:

“-local.json files in the Ning export should be more or less identical to the non-local files, except that the local ones have relative links, which is especially relevant for inline images (which are stored in the /discussions/ directory).”

The plug-in searches first for the “ning-discussions-local.json” file. If that is corrupted, then the process will not complete. Boone said that he could change it, but that would mean having to do a search and replace in mysql of the path set by the export.
