Group member count goes to zero with BP Group Hierarchy and BP 2.7

    @kalico

    I posted this issue on the BP Group Hierarchy forum, but it hasn’t gotten any attention. It occurred to me that maybe I should post it here. I hope this is the right place.

    The problem involves the BP Group Hierarchy plugin’s interaction with BP 2.7.x. In a nutshell, when BPGH is active, the “group members” count drops to zero. This does not happen with BP 2.6.3. I’m not the only person to report this since 2.7 came out. There are other reports on the BPGH page at WordPress.org.

    Background….

    I got some advice a while back (here on the BP forum) to update BPGH using a patched version created by @r-a-y. This fixed some issues I was having at the time, but ever since then I’ve been unable to update BuddyPress beyond 2.6.3. Every time I do, the group members count drops to zero across all groups — both on the main page of groups, and on the group’s own nav menu (e.g., Group Members: 152).

    The problem extends to the display of group admins and mods — e.g., my theme shows the admin and mod pictures at the top of the group page normally, but with BPGH activated, it says “No Admins” and “No Mods”.

    All the group members, including their status as admins and mods, is actually intact if I look at the group in Admin, but BP no longer displays them.

    This happens only with BP versions after 2.6.3. For this reason, I have not been able to update BP since then (sorry, didn’t have time to troubleshoot it in earnest until now!). When I update, the counts go away. When I rollback, it’s all fine.

    I should also mention that I’m experiencing this on a multisite, where BP is network-activated, and the root blog is defined (i.e., define(‘BP_ROOT_BLOG’, 20); in wp-config.php). However, I have tested it with BPGH activated only on the sub-site (root site) and also network-activated, and the problem is the same either way.

    I have tested against other plugin conflicts by disabling all plugins across the entire multisite, and enabling only BuddyPress 2.7. Then as I toggle BPGH off and on, I get member counts, or they go do zero. If I rollback to 2.6.3, then the counts are fine.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA 🙂

    Hi, about BP Group Hierarchy, it is not supported any more.

    I just patched a bunch of pull requests and patches from Github, but I do not maintain the plugin. I personally do not use the plugin either, so I’m sorry that I cannot help out here.

    Your best bet is to engage with the community that uses BPGH and see if someone has a fix. I know that dcavins is working on an alternative to BPGH, but I’m not sure if that plugin supports everything from BPGH yet.

    It also looks like dcavins proposed a fix for the count here:
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/fails-with-bp-2-7/#post-8435421

    If that works, I can merge it into my branch of BPGH.

    Thanks so much for the reply, @r-a-y. I used @dcavins’ fix and it worked to fix the count, but it broke the group search function. When I search for a public group, it doesn’t show up in results. I’ll post over at the community for additional help with that.

    I’ll post back here with results so you can (potentially) do that merge.
