How-To: Expanding BuddyPress Profile Settings Menu

I wrote I very brief post on my blog about this. Due to formatting reasons, I can’t copy and paste the whole thing here but you can take a look if you are a somewhat experienced PHP coder and interested in expanding BuddyPress’s settings for profile users.

    http://www.davidbisset.com/2008/12/23/buddypress-expanding-settings-menu/

I’m doing this to try to add a “Social” networking panel where a user can add all their information on what social networks they are on. This is the beginning of a custom lifestream or social networking integration for BuddyPress.

(BTW: I have also learned how to add additional public pages to BuddyPress profiles but can’t seem to access the values that are created in the wp_usermeta table mentioned in the above example. Anyone that can provide any assistance I would greatly appreciate it – I can show everyone how i’ve created a simple BuddyPress module/component. In fact, it might be my next blog post).

I think you should post it also in http://buddypressdev.org/forums/ (a BuddyPress Community for developers)

Congrats on the new community, but for now i only have the time to monitor this particular forum. I imagine BuddyPress resources are going to be popping up in the next few months. You may repost it over there if you wish. :)

    Update:

    http://www.davidbisset.com/2008/12/23/buddypress-expanding-settings-menu/

Andy suggested that this could be a plugin to drop into the mp-plugins folder, which i managed to do. Now you do NOT have to modify ANY BP core files. Happy days!

Some had an issue downloading the file from the blog. Here is a confirmed working link, just in case you tried but failed and were so pissed you didn’t leave a blog comment. :)

    Here is the code: http://davidbisset.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/bp-social.txt

amazing work! I would like to help translate it to spanish, please let me know what I can do!

EDIT: I added the two pieces of code to my bp-core-settings.php and it just broke my site, loaded a blank page instead of the content.

hey, this is a great idea! It did not work when I entered the bp-social.php in PluginMU but I am also running the pay to blog plugin and I think there is a conflict there or with something. Hey my site is http://theodoremedia.com and if you come up with a fix, please post here or email me grizzlygroundswell@chadeverson.com I have had some really exciting success with twitter, now over 13,000 followers on @chadteverson @clayoxen @EWEverson @grizzlyfeed @grizzlyradiorss @grizzlyvideorss @socialistsqurrl

There is some incredible reach that can be gained through twitter by extending my online efforts through twitter.com

I came up with a strategy you may find interesting http://www.fightingsquad.theodoremedia.com look for the post on twitter. people are getting 1000 followers in 5 days and keep growing every day! If you use the strategy keep me in touch with how much success you are having!
