Most effective/stable events plugin?

  • @pjnu

    Participant

    There’s a lot of hoopla and lots of articles of varying dates and … the plugin directory should really be 1.2 only and have a digg rating option so this question wouldn’t come up but…

    What’s the most effective and stable event plugin you’re using with 1.2? I saw this post

    http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/best-event-plugin#post-33538 but it didn’t provide a clear answer?

    If you could share what stable/useful events plugin you’re using, please share a link to its about or download page and, if you would like, share a link to your site so we can preview how the plugin works. (The plugin directory could use some updating which might result in less FAQs like this in the forum too)

    Thank you!

    Yeah, I’m hoping for a 1.2 version of Erwin Gerrit’s BP-Events, very much. I’m not aware of any that are working out of the box with BP1.2 yet.

    I’d also really love to see a usability refresh of this site’s Plugins section, particularly with compatibility metadata and some options for sorting the list and so on, when Andy and JJJ have some time.

    Thank you @stwc. It seems there’s a lot of buzz for event plugins, but it’s a matter of someone making a stable one for users.

    Maybe advanced search or filter? It’s only 5 pages, but some of the plugins are egregiously outdated or poorly rated so I don’t find it as useful as I think it could be.

    I can’t wait for bp-events any longer. I’m going to just use a simple WordPress plugin for now. Hopefully at some point bp-events or some other BuddyPress solution will happen. Given the pace and history of development… bp-events 1.2 could be months away. Or not. Hard to say.

    I’m so with you, David. What say you and I fund someone to build it in 4 weeks? I mean, I’d rather not go the WP plugin route because I’ll end up with a bunch of events created by users with marginal functionality (no comments, etc) (maybe I’m wornf and need to explore further) But it’s a critical need on my site.

    Game?

    Given the way these things work, why not just take the bp-events code and fork it, if it’s good enough? Seems like a waste to start from scratch. I’d do it, if I didn’t have 17 other things on my plate right now…

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    stwc – with you on both counts. I can vouch that it IS actually good enough to fork. It needs a few 1.2 things corrected and Geo maps added back in and it’s good to go. Now, who to do thi… :-) I am out of bandwidth

    @derekbolden

    I have to second this… the BP-events plugin works very well so if someone wants to fork it that would be better than a whole new solution. I was beginning to resign myself to the fact that I would be stuck with 1.1.3. Again if Erwin doesn’t post a new plug-in soon please someone fork it so all of us with existing BP Events (data tables etc.) don’t have to start from scratch. One of my communities has over 100 events and i would hat to lose the SEO for these.

    If someone does work on this please, please, please add an rss feed for upcoming events.

    I was hoping that helping out at startup was enough, moving bp-events from bp1.0.3 to bp1.1. Given the fast development and change of code, it is not easy to keep up to speed if you don’t active develop. We also need bp-events for our platform, but are busy with groupblog and have some realy, realy cool things coming out for that which will blow your mind.

    Given that though, without events our site is dead in the water. I can’t make any promises, or backwards compatibility, but events is definitely a project we are considering adopting (after I talk to my co-worker ). It would still be based on bp-groups, maybe under a different name since it gives us more freedom to move forward. Either way, it would be a while for us to take on such a project (after bp-groupblog is done), but our hand might be forced.

    So again, no promises, but we are looking at it. If you have any good alternative names for this plugin, share em. I guess it could be as simple as BuddyEvents.

    I have written Erwin directly to assess. I’ll update everyone ASAP.

    @Marius I’d contribute $$ to your effort. While I agree with you that events and groups have a deep relationship (most events will likely be tied to groups in one way or another) I also think it’s important for people to have personally created events that are tied to no groups. For example, using our Alumni model -> you might have a “reunion” type event as part of a ‘Class Year” group and you might have a member create their own personal ‘Poker Night’ event for alumni friends.

    BP Events seems to me to also remain a viable name

    @mariusooms

    Participant

    @Mike Pratt The bp-events came into being by using the bp-groups as a model, almost a search and replace really. So in that sense I mean that events component is based of the groups component. Sorry for the confusion, I didn’t mean relationship :)

    Off course profiles could create events and either link them to groups or not.

    UPDATE-IMPORTANT!

    Great News! Heard back from Erwin re bp-events and he authorized me to post an update (quoted)

    I am working with Dave Aubin to make bp-events work with 1.2,
    including the new templates. That is just days away (I hope), then
    I turn the code over to Sven who has been working on integrating the
    excellent jQuery plugin FullCalendar (and has the code ready to go)
    once I hand over the bp-events 1.2 code.

    I tell you, working with the new template system without any
    documentation has been quite the chore as I am sure you know as well.

    Once that is all working I will release a preliminary version
    and work on some additional features/widgets.

    So, I hope bp-events 1.2 comes out within a month of the
    official bp 1.2 came out, so in all, not too bad!

    BP 1.2 was released on Feb 16th so I think it’s safe to ball-park a working copy around mid march, by his estimation. Suffice to say I am fired up.

    I’ll second that, great news indeed!

    Sounds good. I’ll hold off a little longer :) I was losing faith and perfectly happy launching with a simple WordPress plugin for now. But an integrated solution would be better of course. That said… I will really need recurring events… so who knows… I may STILL end up going with a WP plugin for the time being. Then maybe switch to bp-events in 2011.

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    @David you might be better off doing a manual entry fix for recurring events if bp-events doesn’t have them as you run greater risk of losing all your past events in a switch in the future

    @designodyssey

    This truly awesome news. I’ve been patiently waiting for the events and photo gallery plugins. I’ll have to check into full calendar

    @derekbolden

    Participant

    @Mike Pratt and all I am so jazzed that you heard from Erwin! Whoo hoo! Like I said this is such an essential function of any community site! Way much more than say a photo gallery. In fact it would be awesome if this could be integrated into the core. Just my 2 cents.

    @stwc

    Good news indeed.

    Great news. Once it’s released I can upgrade one of my bp sites to 1.2 lol

    @pcwriter

    @Mike Great news from Erwin! Event postings with user interaction are a must for a community to thrive. I’ve added an events section to my classifieds categories (AWPCP plugin – really cool by the way), but that doesn’t integrate at all with BP. It does however allow for recurring events (via re-posting of an ad) as expired ads can be disabled and re-enabled rather than deleted.

    @Mariusooms Happy to hear that you’re back to developing, and I hope your move and renovations went well! I’m looking forward to the bp-groupblogs update as well. I’ve tried Group Wiki Extension as a replacement but I’ve encountered a few difficulties with wiki creation, and the media upload/insert interface is confusing for test users.

    As for bp-gallery, Brajesh has been dealing with health problems lately, so we’ll have to be patient and wish him well.

    My site is going into pre-launch tomorrow… to drum up some members! So, I can honestly tell those daring few that they have a lot of goodies to look forward to!

    Now, if we could only hear from Jeff about his privacy component… ;-)

    In my site I use this plugin. It has all the basic functions I need – RSVP, confirmation emails, payment bridge, etc. – but the interface is a mess. It also has no BP integration, but I don’t really need that in my project.

    I had planned to restructure, rewrite and expand the plugin, also including the excellent jQuery plugin FullCalendar. I’m very interested to see what Erwin and Marius Ooms come up with! A connection with groups, Buddypress’ killer app imho, sounds like a great idea as well.

    But for my project I really need a solid event management tool, like a self-hosted version of eventbrite.com, integrated with the BP members database. I don’t really need a solution that allows members to create events or put stuff on a calendar.

    Will Erwin and Marius solutions be an event management tool or more like an expanded community calendar? I’d encourage them to look into the EdgeTechWeb plugin…

    EDIT:

    Actually, the EdgeTechWeb plugin is really ugly. I need alternatives…

    PayPal Booking Framework

    Advanced Events Registration (based on EdgeTechWeb’s…?)

    Eventr

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    @Peter you are correct, the EdgeTech event plugin, aside from not integrating with BP at all, is a disaster. Anything user (read ‘non-admin type) related should bend over backwards to keep you OUT of the back end.

    Erwins 1.1.3 version was light years ahead of this one. The 1.2 version will rock even more. There’s no wheel re0invetion necessary here. Facebook does events magnificently. The input process is intuitive and erwin’s plugin is similar.

    Additionally, you can comment on events, before and after, integrate Google Maps, rsvp, etc. Groups or individuals can have events. From what I understand, Brajesh is working on making media inegrated with events (the obvious case being pics of the event) This will not be an expanded community calendar. The jQuery use of calendars is to provide a handy mechanism to display events by type, group, etc (as it shoudl be)

    Will it be perfect? Nope. But I’d wager it’ll be the best BP integrated alternative out there (certainly head and shoulders above that stuff pimped by wpmu.org)

    @takeo

    Participant

    I was actually going to use this one since I don’t need registration or payment: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/calendar/

    @peterverkooijen

    Participant

    @Mike Pratt, I think you missed the point of my question. I’m looking for an event solution that is only for the Admin; an event management tool that’s more like a self-hosted EventBrite than what Facebook has, including payment bridge, confirmation emails and things like that.

    My site is for a monthly networking event, so a good event management tool is essential. I now rely mostly on Meetup.com.

    It is not clear to me if that will be part of Erwin’s plugin. I hope it will be. I posted the links to the other plugins to encourage him/them to look into how they handle these things. Perhaps they can copy some parts. If they don’t do it, I’ll probably try to do it myself when I get to it.

    Also if the plugin is end-user focused by default it may not be usable at all in my case, so I just wanted to put in a vote for my type of use case. I hope it’s possible to make it Admin-only.

    @mrmaz

    If you guys can agree on an existing GPL events plugin that works in WordPress I might consider extending it or forking it to work with BuddyPress. The one that David Lewis mentioned looks promising, and I would probably fork that one since it hasn’t been updated for 9 months (depending on what the author has to say).
