Multi Select Box in Profile fields doesn't work

  • @kansas3d

Im using the newest WordPress 3.9.1 and newest Buddypress 2.0.1 version.

The “Multi Select Box” doesn’t work. It doesn’t save multi selected fields.

When I’m adding under Users > Profile Fields
the Field Type “Multi Select Box” it doesn’t work as it should.

When I’m trying to select in the users profile some values, it is always just saving the first selected value.

Does anyone know how to fix that?

    Thanks

Hi, I have exactly the same problem since updating bpress to 2.0.1 and word press to 3.9.1. most of my fields use multi select box and none of them are working now. In my case it is saving the last selected value.
    thanks for your help

    Thanks for your post.
Good to know that I’m not the only one.
I still couldn’t get it fixed.
It really looks like it’s a bug that exist since the new update of WordPress and Buddypress.

Has anyone found out what the problem is with this? I have a client whose site won’t work without the ability to do this. The multi-select field is a required field and I don’t want to use check boxes because there are too many choices.

It would help if each of you would provide what theme and plugins you are using to help us help you because I have tested against twenty thirteen and fourteen and I can’t replicate your issue. I have changed the multi-select about 10 times and it always saves my selection so maybe it is theme or plugin related. Also are you making sure you click the “Save Changes” button?

I am using X2 Premium theme and multiple plugins. One of them is S2 Member for registration. I didn’t even think about a plugin issue. I’ll deactivate the plugins and see if I can find the problem that way and if not I’ll get back to you. Will probably take some time since site is live and I’ll need to take it offline while I do this.

Yeah when it comes to issues like this the best thing to do is try to narrow it down. I would just batch deactivate all plugins other than BP then activate each one separately and testing the multi-select box until you find which one is causing the issue. I know it is time consuming but it is really the best practice. Good luck!

    Hi,
i’m using custom community theme, s2members and multiple plugins. Deactivating all the plugins and testing them will sure take a lot of time. i’ve spent so much time to make all things working (i’m not a programer so all things were completely new to me) and was so excited when they did:) and now multiple things dont work anymore (eg. multiselect, notifications, following, edit profile). if other plugins that i really need cause the issue what shall i do then? i’d be super happy if someone who knows all these magic things found an easy solution:) thanks!

Well look at the common plugin you and @kemmieg are using which is S2 Member. I would start there by deactivating the plugin and see if the issue persists and if the issue goes away after deactivating the plugin then report it to the plugin author so they can track down the bug.

I think I could track down the bug.

The multi select box worked till till Buddypress 1.9 and the retirement of bp-default.
    (More details here: https://buddypress.org/support/topic/bp-default-parent-theme-missing/)

I had to create bp-custom.php to get my child-theme of bp-default theme back running like described on that linked page.

Since then it doesn’t work anymore. The twenty fourteen theme works.
The problem just appears when trying to use bp-default with a child theme.

Looks like buddy press got a bug when doing this change with the retirement of bp-default.

I just don’t know how to solve and get bp-default back to work with multi select boxes.
Should that be reported to buddypress?

I got the multi select to work on the single profile page but for some reason it’s not letting me put the data into the members loop.

All of a sudden the multi-select stopped working again. I’ve deactivated any new plugins that I added after it started working but still no success. I really need the multi-select to work because there are too many choices to do checkboxes.

Is there anyone out there who can solve this mystery for me? I have deactivated all my plugins and tried using the 2014 theme and the multiselect still isn’t working. I really don’t want to use checkboxes because this information needs to show on the members directory.

I don’t know what else to do.

    Thank you

I did the same research as @kansas3d – multiselect only saves the last of multiple fields on the xprofile edit screen. I am running BP 2.0.1 (WP 2.9.1), and have confirmed that rolling back to BP 1.9 (not BP 2.0) fixes the issue. I disabled all plugins and experienced the same problem in my custom theme (built on Bones, not TwentyFourteen-derived).

Converting multiselect to checkboxes allows for multiple value saving, but is not optimal. I have tracked down some similar tickets (#2176 from BP 1.2 and there’s another somewhere…)

Update – it appears there is an open ticket (#5672) related to this:
