Need Testers: Featured Members Widget
-
I’m looking for a few testers to try out a simple Featured Members Widget (plugin) I just created.
Like all WP widgets, this widget is managed via the WPMU admin panel. Just download, unzip, and place it in your mu-plugins folder. It will automatically be activated. However to use it, you must click “Add” to add it to a particular theme column.
The Featured Members Widget allows you indicate which members you want to feature and to also choose the displayed avatar image size (the standard smaller image or a larger avatar image). You can feature a single member or multiple members.
It uses core BuddyPress CSS selectors for output formatting. So, the output looks like other standard, core BP widgets. If you want to customize the formatting, you’ll need to add your own CSS.
This is a first testing release so I’m looking for issues and any feedback on ways it can be improved.
I plan on totally overhauling this widget’s output (both data and formatting) for a custom BP site I’m currently hacking. But, I thought that I should share this general version with the community before I tear my version apart.
This was tested with WPMU 2.7 and BP trunk 1286.
You can download a zip file directly from here:
http://www.sayremedia.com/buddypress/featured_members_widget.php.zip
Once it seems that this widget is good to go, I’ll add it to the WordPress (BuddyPress) Plugin repository. Until then, you can access it at the link above.

It works, and its great!
Nice widget.
Thanks, Dries. I’m glad you like it!
Hi Jeff,
thanks for this usefull plugin.
I modified it by adding a
after the line 45. To put the full name under the avatar. There’s a little problem when you want to display the member with a full avatar when you use it in the center or right-column.
The pic is showed under the other widget below (sorry for my bad english)
Loran
i had add a < br > after the line 45.
That makes sense.
I assume the problem only shows up when you choose the large avatar size?
I made a minor, aesthetic change to the widget control screen. I did not like the way the text was not inline with the radio buttons. Now it is.
The executing code has not changed. So, if you’ve already downloaded this widget, the only reason to grab the new version is if you want the mentioned aesthetic change too.
I’m still looking for additional testers and more input. Once it has been kicked around for awhile, I’ll make any necessary changes and then submit this widget to the repository.
i have just added this to my site, however its not behaving very well, it stuffs up the next widget, also it only shows the members name and no aditional info, would be nice to show the users main blog link or something,
also the text where the name is, isnt at the top next to the avatar like the other widgets
take a look at it in action on my homepage to see what i mean
Cool
Aron, glad you like it!
Hi Jeff,
I think that your plugin can be use to promote a group too
Actually, there is another plugin on BPDEV that allows admins to pick groups to feature.
Each of these plugins call different functions. So although much of the code is similar in principal, my plugin cannot be used to feature a group nor can the featured group plugin be used to feature a member.
Version updated to: 0.5.2
Okay, there have been a few testers of my Featured Members Plugin (widget). Thank you to all who provided feedback. I plan on submitting this plugin to the WP Plugin repository next week. So, if you have tried this plugin (or plan to try it) and have issues with it, please let me know before then.
I have made a few updates to the plugin:
1. I applied BuddyPress Changeset 1244 ( https://trac.buddypress.org/changeset/1244 ) to address localization issues.
2. I corrected a minor coding issue that had no performance impact.
Also, this version of the plugin has been tested up to WPMU 2.7.1_beta1 (r1722) and BuddyPress trunk (r1324).
If you plan on using it with the standard BuddyPress theme, you will have formating issues if you place the widget in the center or right columns and select the large avatar size. Basically, the member name gets pushed below the avatar. If that is an issue, either select the small avatar size or look at Mesgains solution above.
I’ve added this widget, and i must say .. It just works fine
Works great, I did some CSS changes, but it works like a charm.
What kind of changes did you make ?
Thanks for everyone’s comments!
It seems like this BuddyPress widget is good to go. I’m going to submit it to WP’s Plugin Repository. Once (if) accepted, I will post the new link to it here and remove the file from my server.
works very well…. my first assumption was that it would pull a random member and list them as featured.. rather than entering id #..
I think I will modify this to randomly get a member id # from the DB
unless this has been done already? either way, nice plugin
Well I wanted the avatar (I’m using the large ones) to be centered in the column (I’m using the “center” column) – so I took away the ID’s and classes associated with the DIVs outside the avatar loop in the plugin and created new ones so I could properly center the avatar, as well as take away the background that comes with all widgets…
