Newbie Questions

I have some questions, many of which have probably been answered; and if that is the case, I apologize. I’ve also read the documentation related to these topics, but they don’t make any sense (to me). I have very little understanding of how WordPress plugins work, but here’s what I ultimately want to accomplish…

-Have 5 different types of users, each of which can do certain things on the site and each have a slightly different user experience. This would need to be selected at the time of registration.
–Specifically, the user types on my site would be: Patient, Family, Friend, Caregiver, Medical Professional. Patients can access certain areas of the site, while Medical Professionals can access others, etc.
—Medical Professional user account types would need to go under further review after registration.
-The ability for members to easily instant-message each other, similarly to Facebook.

Any help or guidance on where to find the information I need to do this would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

P.S. The site URL will require you to log in; if you need to actually view my site, let me know and I will turn the “lock” off.

Your requirements can be met – but will require extensive custom coding.

Content restriction can be handled with plugins like s2member.

There are some plugins for role creation and capabilities management.

But you’ll still need to create or hire a developer to create the missing requirements and any needed bridges between existing plugins. And it’s going to be quite a bit of work.

    The messaging aspect is covered.

You may want to set up a test site where you can try out different plugins and combinations.
It will give you a better idea of what is required to match your specs.
And you’ll be able to talk specifics with developers.

Thanks for the info, @shanebp. I have a developer that I will be discussing those details with and will be starting on the project shortly.
