Now alive and ready for testing is the beta version of BuddyPress 1.2.
This version will work with both WordPress 2.9.1 and WordPress MU 2.9.1 or higher. We especially need standard WordPress installation testers to put BuddyPress through its paces. Installation instructions can be found in the readme.txt file.
If you’d prefer to not download and install the beta version, you can always help with testing by registering on our testing community site. This always runs the bleeding edge version of BuddyPress.
You can find a list of known issues and a place to post bugs via the BuddyPress Trac installation.
Testing Upgrades
If you’re going test upgrading a previous BuddyPress installation please read the following instructions (please only test backup copies when upgrading with a beta):
- If you’re using a custom theme that is not a child theme of bp-sn-parent, please download and install the backwards compatibility plugin before doing anything.
- Deactivate BuddyPress.
- Upload and overwrite your existing BuddyPress plugin directory.
- Delete “bp-default” and “bp-sn-parent” from your themes directory.
- Activate BuddyPress. You do not need to move any themes.
We also now have a development blog. Weekly meetings are held in IRC every Wednesday at 19:00 UTC. Happy testing!

Ticket has been raised to report with Trac
Hi all, great work on the 1.2 it works and it looks nice too 😉
I’m having a little issue in the members page and widget where only the admin user name is displayed while others are not shown near the avatar, there’s just an empty link. Does that happen to any of you?
I’ve registered users through the admin interface as my site won’t permit front page registration.
Marco
@flyingfrog: This is a bug in the beta, it will be fixed.

Hi Andy, i’m using your facebook connect plugin and i have a problem. This plugin, is works correctly but not close the user sesion.
Wait for your reply!.. Thanks
Does this beta installed on single user wp2.9.1 include forums? I have it installed and it’s running well except I don’t see forums.
Thanks
Pai
[…] There is a Beta of BuddyPress that allows you to run it in WP: BuddyPress.org – WordPress Social Network Software → BuddyPress 1.2 Beta When WP 3.0 releases (sometime in March?) this will release from beta shortly after. […]
@paisano,
I think you need to download bbPress into the following folder:
/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/
I noticed during an upgrade to BP 1.2 beta that I had to copy that folder there.
@Andy, is the BP script supposed to download a copy of bbPress?
Yes, it includes forums. You have to install the forum software under the Buddypress admin pages in the Dashboard. There is a forum link and then click the installation buttons.
Hi. Congrats for this great aplication!!!
There is a posibility of have diferent sidebars? eg:
Home -> Sidebar1
Blog -> Sidebar2
Pages -> No Sidebar
Members -> Sidebar3
Groups -> Sidebar4
Forum -> Sidebar5
This allow have diferents widgets in differents sidebars. I think this is very useful. And it will make BP more than customizable.
@roy
Thanks for that.
I was doing an upgrade to an existing BP install, which explains why I didn’t see any forum link.
Buddypress 1.2 Beta seems to be cool! lot of enhancements
But i am waiting for stable release
Can any one tell me when the stable version will be available ?
Great job! I was able to successfully upgrade to 1.2 beta without a single issue. Creating a child theme is so easy! Thanks!!
I just have a problem with the language interface. My site is in French so I downloaded the buddypress-fr_FR.po/.mo files and now my frontend appears in French, that’s great! However, the WP admin remains in English even though I am using the French language pack. I am also using qTranslate, but on some of my blogs, it is not activate and yet the interface still shows in English in wp-admin.
Any ideas why that would do that?
Thanks!
Marc-O.
Merci je vais regarder se que ça donne pour voir l’évolution.
Andy,
Your initial writeup mentions that the beta will run on WP or WP MU.
However, the requirements section for the shipping release requires MU.
Can I install on a straight WP site? If so, what functionality would be missing?
Thanks,
Art
I’d like to ditto Art, whose comment is just above mine. I’d love to see a side by side comparison of what BuddyPress does in WP and what it does in WPMU. I want to build community into my business blog, but I do not want users to have the blogging option. I don’t know much about MU, is there an option to turn off user blogs in MU? If so will there still be greater benefit of community using MU and buddyPress instead of single WP and buddyPress?
Andy
Just want to say I appreciate the work that you and others have done to date. We are so excited to work with Buddypress 1.2 and WordPress. we are just finishing the basics of “The Republic of Boon” you can find it here:
http: http://www.boonrepublic.com
As soon as we get a breather We want to contribute help to the project. One thing that I believe we have solved for ourselves is the splogger problem that many are having it has been about a week but we have not been getting any sploggers on the system.
A Boon To You

Apologies if this question has been answered in a really obviously place and I’ve just missed it – but what is the difference between installing BuddyPress on WordPress, and installing it on WordPress MU?
Anyone have any idea when buddypress 1.2 will be out of beta?
