Member Types Defined By Group At Sign-up

Hi,
I’m trying to create a way to separate member types based on group. In an ideal situation… There would be Group A, and Group B, both of which hold specific member types.
For instance…
Firefighters = Group Type
(Station Chief = Member Type)
(Firefighter = Member Type)
(Receptionist = Member Type)Police Offices Group
(Police Chief = Member Type)
(Police Officer = Member Type)
(Receptionist = Member Type)Ultimately this would allow me to assign specific profile fields based on Group Type & Member type selections at sign up. Has anyone ever done this or know how I could do this at sign up?

Might it be possible utilizing the above resources? Also, is there a way to prevent the user from being able to change this information from within their account?
