Are you aware of the Open Stack? Integration of the Open Stack is on the BuddyPress roadmap for sometime around version 1.4. It will do what you are proposing and more. If you want a real challenge, you can start working on integrating the Open Stack into BP!

This is a great idea because a lot of people live by Facebook and other social networks, integrating them all together could become a future direction of web 3.0

This is great idea. If you can integrate sites’ users of the like such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and so on… it will be a killer app for bb.
Waclaw — I’ve started working on a jQuery plugin for distributed social networks (the social stack). One thing that’s needed is a process for “discovery.” There are several solutions already out there implementing various kinds of things along this line, but nothing quite like what you’re calling for.
Go look up Chris Messina, Luke Shepard and David Recordon (Facebook), Joseph Smarr and John McCrea (both Plaxo). They’re all advocating this type of stuff.

Anyway, I think I’ve seen you in the dev chat, so maybe I’ll talk to you there too, when time permits. There’s much to say on this, and I’m hoping to do some good legwork on getting things ready. While I don’t have *only* BuddyPress in mind as the platform, it is the most interesting platform (and viable) at the moment.
Oh, I failed to mention Will Norris, who already wrote an OpenID plugin for WordPress, which works pretty good, but seems to be missing a few key features.
There’s some talk of integrating OpenID into the core of WP, but there’s also disagreement on this. With BuddyPress putting it on the iteration roadmap, this may change people’s minds in the long run as they realize how Identity *IS* the platform (the core) of the Internet.
I would not use Buddypress if it would force members of my sites to sign up with OpenID. Perhaps I misunderstand, but I would always want the option to make an old-fashioned closed off site with its own registration, independent of OpenID or whatever other self-appointed overseer – sure Facebook, Plaxo etc. are “all advocating that stuff”, they want to become the gatekeepers.
Peterverkooijen: Of course, the goal is certainly *not* to disable the standard registration procedure — if that was the case, neither I would be interested in doing this. The point is to /support/ Open ID registration, not to enforce it (besides, IMO it would be against any true open ideology to do that; how is enfocring open-ness open? )
What I am actually looking at is having a way (regardless of using Open ID or or) to have members who sign up to one buddypress site I own, automatically become members of other sites I want to set up.
Then different social networks could aggregate together. Sort of like a buddypress multisite. In otherwords what wordpress mu is to wordpress, I am looking for something that will allow me to host several social networks under one container and you automatically have access to the others.
Kind of like Ning, but without Ning, because I could set everything up on Ning, but I don’t like my data being owned by a third party.
If we could develop a on containter for buddypress multisites and then a way to link those containers together and provide openID integration a lot of bases could be covered. What do you guys say? If you catch what I mean.

@ zageek, this is exactly the idea I had when I first encountered BuddyPress.
We are still trying to figure out how to set up this kind of network
as well as social site integrations.
I think it’s even more pertinent with the advent of single WP BPs.

Does anybody know if open stack support is still planned? Maybe if enough people are interested we could pool together some funds to develop it as a plugin.
I am up for something like this as I think that it could be a vital way to give the control back to the users rather than the Silo owners. There are some other initiatives out there which could be linked into this.
I am in the process of writing up something about this very type of subject and I will post a link to it as soon as possible
