    Update:

    well i’ve just tested option #1 and it didn’t work – my test new user had all email notifications still set to ON as the default.

    and # 2 code didn’t work either – all set to ON.

    Maybe @henrywright or @nd1 could throw some light on this if possible, as their thread is now closed??

    Or any other ideas would be much appreciated – thanks heaps.

    Back again, after just completing the above edits and BINGO! it works! But only because i followed your very clear step-by-step instructions above. Thank you @danbp and @hnla for your help and support – Only possible by the ‘paint by numbers’ approach for me at present!

    I presume that if i want to ‘hide a couple of other things in a user’s profile section I could do it the same way (just don’t know where of course!)? Both are in a user’s profile > Settings; one is the ‘Profile Visibilty’ tab and the other is the bottom section of the ‘Email’ notifications tab, which shows the Groups email notifications options (as I’ve set them all to default as off for new users, via my functions.php).

    But I’m happy to start a new thread for this as it might be better for others to follow?

    Cheers.

    OK, I’m becoming a bit more familiar with BP, so now want to tackle your recommended code above. Just a quick question for you @danbp first: when you said…

    Here is a solution to remove what’s new form from the activity page, but let it live for groups.

    Can you confirm that means that all users can still post comments in all group threads, but removes that option in their profile section? ie. forcing all comments/activity to be via the Groups? – as per my original aim?

    And if so, why do I have to do both edits to achieve this?

    Sorry to be a pain, but we’re about to go live and I don’t want to mess it up now!

    Cheers.

    Thanks for the links @danbp.

    From the 2nd link, I think it’s suggesting that I can add the ‘false’ statement in instead???

    So what’s the best policy for now – leave the code as I’ve got it now (as posted above)? or try to reformulate it with the add_filter ‘false’ statement, referencing the code they mention: (‘bp_get_group_create_nav_item’, ‘__return_false’ );

    And if the latter, how exactly should it be written?
    Cheers.

    Hi @mrjarbenne,

    Thanks so much for helping – I’ve only just found your reply (don’t know what happened to the email notification this time). Anyway, I’ve added it into my bp-custom.php as suggested and Bingo! it works brilliantly. just tried a new test member and I’m instant joined to all 3 of my groups!

    Thanks so much for this. Just for clarity for others this is the code i used as per @modemlooper info above:

    function automatic_group_membership( $user_id ) {
       if( !$user_id ) return false;

       groups_accept_invite( $user_id, $group_id );
    }
    add_action( 'bp_core_activated_user', 'automatic_group_membership' );

    I have left the spacing exactly as he’d done, just in case… but maybe I could get rid of some of the extra spaces in it?

    Cheers 🙂

    OK, I don’t think the s2member route is an option for our membership structure, so it needs to be a Buddypress solution…

    I’ve tried various options with the code suggested in the link I posted above but so far it’s not right. This is what i have added into compose.php:

    			if ( !is_super_admin() ) {
    			input type=”hidden” name=”send-to-input” value=”admin”
    			} else {
    			input type=”text” name=”send-to-input”
    			}

    but I’m obviously not putting it in the correct place – or perhaps I need to edit out some bits too??

    Maybe @henrywright-1 or @lavishdhand could post their fix for this – just with a little more clarity as to where in compose.php it should go please?

    I’d really appreciate it if anyone could give some advice here!

    Thanks.

    Wow – that’s excellent info! Thanks so much for that. I am gradually learning how BP is put together, so I’m sure it’ll get easier!
    Cheers 🙂

    OK, as no other info I’ve stuck to original idea of removing it with css and it’s worked really well!
    Sorted!

    OK, I’m a newbie with BP but you have to:
    1. edit/set up your registration page form fields that you want in Users > profile Fields.
    2. you can edit the actual text found in the Registration page in registration.php file. Found here on your server: plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/registration/register.php
    3. you can edit the actual text found in the Activate page in activate.php file. Found here on your server: plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/registration/activate.php

    If you read the getting started docs they help a lot, and then search this forum and on the i/net you’ll find heaps more info.

    Good luck!

    Thanks so much for that @rosyteddy – it wasn’t until i compared your code with mine above (which is to all intents the same) that i realised that my “‘” around ‘profile’ and ‘position’ etc were the wrong ones! They were curly ones!

    I’d copied the code from an excellent blog (and checked it against others + the forum here) but hadn’t realisied the mistake – so now works perfectly!

    Hopefully I’ll now remember that for another time.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks for your reply @hnla.

    I’ve read through some of the codex and form what I understand I need to make a buddypress folder in my child theme and then add the files I want to edit into this so it loads first – all good there. OR that I cam edit BP actions by putting edits in a newly created bp-custom.php – which I’ve done and added into the root folder for the main plugins (/wp-content/plugins) ready for any customizations.

    I’ve searched extensively in the BP files on my server including:
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-members/bp-members-activity.php
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress-functions.php
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress/members/index.php
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress/members/single/activity.php
    … but can’t find the “whats-new-form” referenced there.

    I’ve found some info re. “whats-new-form” in a couple of files:
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress/activity/post-form.php
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/activity/post-form.php
    …both of which seem to relate to the role=”complementary”, so not related to the member activity only section that I’m after (role=main).

    And the activity index file you mentioned:
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/members/single/activity.php
    …did contain role=main but not the “whats-new-form”.

    My grasp of php is limited and I can’t for the life of me work out what to do with all this!

    Your suggestions would be appreciated – or links to info for this instead.

    many thanks.

    Neither of these plugins have been updated in over 2 years (according to w/p plugin directory), and I’m currently testing the BuddyPress Registration Groups plugin, but again it hasn’t been updated in ages, and although it works well, it has some styling issues that aren’t being addressed as yet.

    So… I was looking how to do this myself with the code – the function code you gave above, which php file should I add it into? And does this code mean that all new members would be automatically added to all groups?

    Thanks for your help with this – much appreciated.
