    Just thought I’d give people an update.

    1) As discussed, we moved to making use of inbuilt wordpress functions as much as possible and hence avoid the nightmare of trying to make mediawiki work in a way that is ‘nice’ with buddypress.

    2) We’ve taken inspiration from the following plugins: front-end-editor, bp-groupblog and wp-wiki. We currently aren’t using any of the code from these, but many thanks to the authors of these plugins for their very informative code.

    3) Work is progressing very nicely. Sadly we probably won’t have a working beta before xmas but I’m going to post up a few screenshots next week with some luck. In the meantime, here are two to whet your appetite slightly:

    Group Wiki Create Screen

    http://linktart.co.uk/_files_/dev/wiki1.png

    Group Wiki Home Screen

    Please note: Our designer hasn’t re-styled these pages yet so bits of it look quite rough. Apologies about that. Functionality-wise we’re probably about 50% of the way there, with a few placeholders here and there until we can finish things.

    Any thoughts? I realise that there isn’t exactly much to go on at the moment :) I should also probably again mention that we were looking for quite a simple wiki plugin for our students, not a fully blown wiki system…

    No worries. I thought that might be the case. I’ll submit this kind of thing through trac next time – I originally thought I was doing something wrong but part way through posting realised what the problem was :)

    Forgot to mention – The admin and creation pages for the group component are displaying correctly.

    Please revert your three column change for the group homepages. It was so much better with two columns. One of the major improvements with the new theme was the way the layout didn’t change everytime you clicked somewhere.

    I can understand people’s frustrations but I’m personally very happy with the lack of IE6 support. It means I can have a clean conscience when I don’t support it in any plugins/themes/etc. Luckily at the university here our ITS guys have managed to push through an IE upgrade on the campus computers. It’s only IE7, but it’s still a million miles better than 6 (and the students also get access to firefox and opera).

    Does the bp-classic theme work with IE6?

    Definitely keep the excerpts, though having an easier option to change the length of them would be nice.

    I do think we need to have something to feed back comments to the original posting… I’m not sure what would be the best though and I completely agree with the worry of removing the need to visit the original content. As you say, something to worry about for 1.3.

    Think I may have worked out the problem now actually… I installed with sub-domains rather than sub-directories on a dev server where sub-domains don’t play nicely. Must have been in too much of a rush from the excitement :)

    I’ll do some more checking later tonight (just about to head home from work). It’s more than possible that I’ve done something wrong :)

    edit: These errors fixed as of rev 2174. I’ll stop spamming you now Andy :)

    edit again: There’s still no “My Blogs” adminbar item though.

    Looks nice so far. Thanks Andy :)

    Something I’ve noticed is that there is no longer a “My Blogs” menu item in the adminbar. Is this intentional?

    I was actually worried that the extra load might cause problems :p I took a break from refreshing the page endlessly and bought a coffee. Installing it now..Woo.

    Oohh.. Time to spam F5 on the trac methinks :)

    Sounds promising Erich73…

    I am more than happy with it not being ‘stable’ until late January/early February. I can deal with revisions and such in the meantime :)

    I have tinymce with fairly minimal options enabled on a current site but it’s very very hacky code. I’m planning on turning it into a plugin (along with some filters to sort out the raw html problem) but if something else becomes available before I get round to doing it, the lazy part of me is more than happy :p

    If there’s going to be a dev version of it available to work on soon then it would be pretty pointless to start work on a theme based on the old “bp-classic” theme. I have no problems with Andy not putting it into trunk this weekend (though of course I wouldn’t complain if he did) but in regards to creating plugins/themes/etc, I’d far prefer to work on the basis of what will be the future of BuddyPress rather than the past.

    With luck i should be releasing a plugin to do this in January/February 2010.

    Hi everyone.

    Is there any update on when this is going into trac? I’m not trying to put any pressure on Andy or complain but for some reason I thought I’d read that it was likely to go on there this weekend sometime.

    Any news or updates that I’m not aware of maybe?

    @Gezan

    It doesn’t seem too bad as far as wikis go (reasonable amount of features, not too cluttered with whatever theme we’re running) but the integration with Blackboard is quite lacking, mostly in the group management department, which is exactly where i’m hoping we can improve things by using BuddyPress.

    No worries. I would love to be involved in a project similar to your suggestion – so perhaps it’s something we can run parallel :)

    @Boone Gorges

    It’s looking like we’ll be going that route for now. I think we’re likely to end up with something far more useful (to start with) but I agree – there is definitely a call for a basic wiki plugin and something more fully-fledged…I’d like to be involved with the development of both :p

    If you would like to chat about the development we did with mediwiki sometime I’d be happy to go through it with you and provide the partial code. It might be enough to provide a spark of interest/development attention from people. I will warn you that it’s in an awful state though – it’s just me playing with things and trying to get a rough solution working before later refining.

    @Fairweb and @Xevo

    I’ve discussed these options with the team and it looks like we’ll be moving more in this direction if our investigation goes well. Thanks for the input :)

    Will get back later with more info…

    Our first stage actually worked in quite a similar way to that which you’re describing, minus some of the functionality.

    Part of the reason we’re now using a wiki is purely down to the way that people get excited when you talk about wikis when compared to other tools. This has led to more funding for further development… I’m sure you’ve run into similar situations before :)

    @Xevo

    Which other plugin are you talking about? Wikiwp looks like it could be something interesting to look at as a base…which I’ll do today. I’m not sure that modifying to it fit our spec will be any easier than the other approaches we’ve talked about though.

    @Gezan

    I’m sure everyone here will understand that I have to work to the requirements of the project first and foremost. All of us here are being paid to do this work and a late delivery would be a serious problem. Anyone ‘enlisted’ on this site would be a volunteer so it would be unreasonable to expect the same kind of full-time hours/timeframe from them.

    I would love to do this ‘properly’ from the start but sadly we need to get something that works out of the door fairly quickly, even if it isn’t perfect in our eyes.

    Hopefully I’ll be able to get something vaguely useful out of the door in early January. I’ll definitely keep everyone updated on here.

    Lol. Good point :)

    I just wish I had more time for pleasure rather than it all being taken up by ‘real’ work :)

    I think I ended up commenting out the email notification before first activation on a live site. I then added it back. If I remember correctly you also have your activity stream somewhat spammed so that might be another thing to look at :)
