In reply to: First experiments and I already need help 🙁
If also done dev locally, but set my hosts file to show the live domain on my local dev site. So the only one who could see the “new” site was me. And only on my computer.
In reply to: Google don’t add my siteThen google hasn’t crawled your site yet. Since this is purely related to google itself, you’d be better off searching their knowledgebase for how to get them to go look at your site today.
In reply to: WPMU or Buddy Press is really slowI usually tell people for an active site, minimum 512 megs of ram.
you don’t get that on shared.
In reply to: First experiments and I already need help 🙁“the switch to the main domain after the beta is finished. This would mean that a lot of users would be already registered and a lot of data inserted.”
Uh, bad plan. It’s not as easy as just single WP and switching the URL in a couple places. MU stores a LOT of basic info about the blogs in a multitude of places. As you’ve seen.
In reply to: WPMU or Buddy Press is really slowYeah, if you have php5. If not, I can see it borking.
Actually…. yeah, you can do this in MU. Theoretically. Buddypress doesn’t care what the domains are, and it’s not multi-site aware. (the old site term, not the new one)
So I’m pretty sure you can do this with the multisite plugin, bp & mu, without too much tinkering.
disclaimer: not wpmuguru, but I work in the same office
In reply to: BuddyPress for dummies bookLisa has done her best to keep up with as many changes as the software. I think Andy did the technical editing as well.
So it may not be as out of date as you think.
In reply to: Photo Albums…. omfg!!“What I would suggest is we think seriously about scalability. Once random users get to upload media (presumably video at some point), we need scalability.”
already done. In both WP & MU, you can define an alternate uploads folder for everything, and this including using a completely different site.
In reply to: Spammers in buddypress.orgzageek – in another thread @mikepratt mentioned he has a small number of required fields. If you just have the default stuff on signup, yeah, you’ll get flooded.
In reply to: User-Blogs to have same design as testbp.org ?The default theme already allows for custom header images if you;re running it on the member blogs too. Users have to go in the backend tho. unless brajesh was writing a plugin to figure out how to do this on the front side?
In reply to: American Idol fan site using BuddyPress 1.2If you want, you can put it up at freebpthemes.com.
As far as I know, the theme repo doesn’t allow child themes.
I’ll also list it over at freebpthemes.com so more people can find it.
In reply to: American Idol fan site using BuddyPress 1.2I must say, you did a good job.
In reply to: Convert a WordPress Theme to a BuddyPress ThemeGuess it depends on a couple things:
– what you want on the front page (activity stream vs posts)
– if there’s any javascript/ajax conflicts between bp & p2.
man I wish I had time to play.
In reply to: Convert a WordPress Theme to a BuddyPress ThemeThat’s the exact opposite of what he needs though.
In reply to: Multiblogs using one buddypress database?3.0 is available for testing in trunk. A very rough timeline is April. If you could specify what things you wanted, I can certainly tell you if they;re coming in 3.0 or not.
In reply to: Starting real developmentSometimes it’s best just to slap on the water wings and jump in the deep end of the pool.
In reply to: Brand new install of 1.2 with wpmu 2.9.1try resaving the permalinks. Odd glitch in MU.
In reply to: Install Buddypress 1.2 BetaIf you grabbed a zip of the trunk, then it’s in a folder called “trunk” when you unzip it.
rename the folder to buddypress.
Your error logs woudl definitely have given you this clue.
In reply to: WPMU or Buddy Press is really slowIf the server has been tweaked inefficiently or set up wrong, that could do it. Plugins can do it. There’s too many variables it could be without :
a) looking myself

b) knowing what’s on there.
In reply to: Same look for all blogs… and use the More Blog Defaults plugin to set this theme as the default for new blogs.
“Delete the default theme from your themes directory and then rename the folder with your theme to ‘default’. “
You also have to rename the theme at the top of the stylesheet, and you *should* delete the home.php in the copy of the theme just for blogs.
I know a bunch of us have done this already – someone needs to go dump them in the repo.
In reply to: Buddypress Fatal error after automatic upgrade“Fatal error with no indication of what the error is.”
Errors are usually suppressed on the front end. did you check your server’s error logs?
“Here is my post on another thread regarding the same issue: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/cannot-activate-bp-12-fatal-error-cannot-redeclare-bp_loader_activate”
The phrase in there with the big clue is “cannot redeclare” Which means it is being called twice.
Which means likely – stab in the dark guess here – you have two copies of the plugin.
“How come nobody can give me any insite into whats going on”
because you have two posts within 7 hours during a timeframe where a large portion of the volunteers here are sleeping.
They do that sometimes.
“Can someone direct me to instructions/tutorials on how to create static pages, “
Go to the admin area of the main blog, find the Pages menu, click Add New.
You only need a BP theme on the blog using BP. (in your case, the Community blog)
In reply to: Is there any way to stop spammers? One thing to remember, the spammers can see the signup code. That’s what they build their scripts for.
The better you can customize your site, the better you can stop them.
Checking your referral logs is one way you can see how they’re getting in. Tip: login to the bbpress admin area and CLOSE SIGNUPS.
In reply to: Is there any way to stop spammers?I know on the MU side, you can ban registrations from specified email domains. (Site Admin -> Options)
Can’t remember if this translates over to the BP side.
