Dito I think its a great idea!! I myself am having a really hard time figuring out how to make the most of our forums and I think this is a big step in the right direction!
First is there anything in the repo version that wasn’t in the version available a couple of days back? Also regarding your “I’ll be adding a few more page templates with various layouts” comment is there an eta and can you provide some more detail whats being added?
Lastly I was in IE (whatever the latest version is) last night and the widget areas seem to be having a hard time displaying correctly. Thought I would mention it in case you want to look into it.
I think improved privacy is must for things like member profiles, so I looking forward to seeing the updated plugin and possible improvements to 1.3.
In the mean time I thought I would offer up the following.
A while back asked a question on this very question over at premium.wpmudev.org and here is the response/ solution I was given. No idea if it can applied to other theme or BP 1.2 but for what it’s worth here it is.

i see the member directory still viewable after turn on privacy...yeap
it is a glitch in theme...no worry here's an easy fix
to directories\members\index.php before get_header();
actually you can apply this to any page you do not want unlogged user to view like group, forum etc..
Hey just wanted to point that while ‘widgetized home page” is one possible solution it may not be for everyone. I say this for two reasons. The first being that itonly adds columns to the front page. This means that one is still stuck with the default two column layout on all other pages. Second it has a bug that can alter widget display with some widgets.
Oh and (I may be wrong on this one) I don’ thing that this theme allows for activity streams on the front page.
firefox and it looks like it might be an issue with the Recently Active Member Avatars widget. Seems to only be happening when the RAMW is onto of others.
Thanks got up now but there seems to be a display issue. If I add more than one widget to a column the lower widgets header seems to wrap around the side of the upper widget.
