    @bpinspire – I think I found the source of the problem. I have posted an update to the plugin (0.3.1) which should fix it. Please let me know if it fixes things for you.

    @greg – the checkbox thing is definitely on my list for the next release!

    Not sure if the master forum idea is close enough in spirit to be part of this plugin. I’ve built hooks into the group management plugin to allow other plugins to be managed through the interface, though, so if I or someone else builds the master forum plugin, it could conceivably be managed through the group management screen. (though I’m not sure it makes that much sense, given how the whole point of the master forum is to be group-independent!)

    Thanks for the comments and ideas, though, keep ’em coming.

    Thanks for the feedback, everyone, keep it coming. Won’t have time to look seriously at this plugin for another few weeks, but it will be nice to have a list of tasks and requests.

    Hi Kunal17. When I upgraded my site from BP 1.0.x to BP 1.1.x, I had to go through the process of migrating from an external bbPress install to the internal one. Here’s the blog post I wrote on the subject: http://teleogistic.net/2009/12/upgrading-from-buddypress-1-0-to-1-1/

    As far as advantages/disadvantages, to the best of my knowledge BP uses the most recent release of bbPress for its internal forum workings, and will continue to do so. Thus, as long as you keep your external bbPress installation up to date, it is unlikely that they will stop working together (granted that you have done the work to make them work together in the first place). When you move to the internal forums, you lose some of the extensibility of the external bbPress, as many of the plugins have not been ported to (or replicated for) BuddyPress yet. But not having to worry about the consistent look, shared userbase, etc was very much worth it for me.

    Good idea, Greg.

    In reply to: bunch of ideas….

    andrea_r – there is a way to hook BP up to an existing bbPress install, but I think rspowers is talking about phpbb. If you’ve got a lot of activity in an existing phpbb forum community, you really have two options:

    1) Build a bridge between phpbb and bp (which will make them share users, group info, and activity data) and skin them to look alike

    2) Find a script that will translate phpbb threads into bbpress compatible ones (like https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/a-phpbb-to-bbpress-database-converter) and then do a normal bbpress install inside of BP

    (2) seems way, way easier, especially in the long run. The only downside is that the BP-native version of bbPress isn’t as feature-rich as dedicated forum software like phpbb.

    function blog_posts_by_default( $query_string ) {
    global $bp;
    if ( !$query_string )
    $query_string = '';

    if ( ($bp->current_component == BP_ACTIVITY_SLUG || !$bp->current_component) ) {
    if ( strpos( $query_string, 'action' ) == 0 )
    $query_string .= '&type=activity_update&action=activity_update';
    }

    return $query_string;
    }
    add_filter( 'bp_dtheme_ajax_querystring', 'blog_posts_by_default' );

    OK, here’s a bit of a refinement.

    function blog_posts_by_default( $query_string ) {
    global $bp;

    if ( !$query_string )
    $query_string = '';

    if ( ($bp->current_component == BP_ACTIVITY_SLUG || !$bp->current_component) && !strpos($query_string, 'type='))
    $query_string .= 'type=new_blog_post&action=new_blog_post';

    return $query_string;
    }
    add_filter( 'bp_dtheme_ajax_querystring', 'blog_posts_by_default' );

    Ted – just a little tip. In my experience it can be tricky to make BP widgets work on blogs other than the BP root blog, at least when they involve AJAX. WP doesn’t accept ajax requests from other domains, which includes things like subdomains (eg example.com won’t accept an ajax request from cool.example.com). My workaround has been to manually generate the ajaxurl rather than depending on the one autogenerated by wp. One of these days I will get around to posting the workaround on my blog – but hopefully this will get you started in the right direction.

    hnla – If I read the thread above correctly (my posts, at least), it sounds like no one disagrees with you that it is important. Anything I end up developing will not have contact harvesters at first, and if it has them later then they will be able to be disabled by the sitewide admin.

    Parts of the necessary plugin:

    1) Upon activation, create “General” BP group, with forums enabled

    2) After creation, have a script add all existing members

    3) Hook into registration so that new members join the group

    4) Write a function that filters the content of bp_has_groups everywhere it appears to remove the General group from all group listings

    5) Sit back and watch the (free and open source) jack roll in

    Someone please build it so that I can stop seeing this argument recur on these forums every few weeks. If I didn’t have seven thousand other things to do I’d do it myself but hey – I just took all the thinking out of it by drawing a map :)

    I took ten minutes and figured out why it’s not posting on the new bp-default. This zip file http://teleogistic.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/bp-tinymce.zip contains a version of the plugin that *should* work on 1.2+ versions of bp-default. I have not tested it thoroughly, and will not do so for a few weeks (at which point I will update the version in the repository), but until then please feel free to hack away at this one.

    You got it! If you get a nice activity widget put together, I bet a lot of people would be interested in it – so don’t be shy about posting it here :)

    gregfielding – I think you’re right that it doesn’t have to be complicated, but putting it in the Dashboard is a no-no for me at least, as most of my users aren’t using the Dashboard for anything. Better to have it somewhere on the front end.

    @boonebgorges

    Not sure why bp_blogs_get_latest_posts() isn’t working for you, but you might try as a more future proof alternative (bp_blogs will be phased out) the activity loop https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-activity-stream-loop/

    So you’d have something like (off the top of my head – probably won’t work without tweaking!)

    <?php if (bp_has_activities( 'action=new_blog_post&max=5' ) : while ( bp_activities() ) : bp_the_activity(); ?>
    // use the activity loop functions to display information
    <?php endwhile; ?>
    <?php endif; ?>

    BTW – round here I don’t think bumping is too taboo, but the 13 hours between Friday night and Saturday morning are generally not a very busy time on the forums :)

    A new standard for BP plugin developers, that checks for the existence of BP before requiring any BP-dependent files, has just begun to be implemented. More and more, you’ll find that the problem is fixed for the most popular plugins.

    I’m swamped with other work, sorry. If anyone picks apart and figures out the problem, please let me know. Otherwise I will try to fix it as soon as I can.

    I’ve never used the Template Pack before, but a quick glance at the code shows that it is looking for the JS that is included in bp-default, unless you have selected the Disable BP Template Pack JS / AJAX on the Dashboard page. Have you done so? When you look at the page source for the activity page, do you see the javascript being loaded in the document head? Is the path to the javascript file /bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/global.js correct? Does BP_PLUGIN_DIR . ‘/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/ajax.php’ exist on your system?

    I’m afraid i don’t entirely understand. Are ‘posts’ like ‘blog posts’?

    Or perhaps it makes sense to think of them as a special kind of activity item? In newer versions of BuddyPress there is the ability to add metadata to activity items. Look in bp-activity.php for functions like bp_activity_get_meta and bp_activity_update_meta. An activity type called ‘posts’ could then be defined and displayed differently.

    You’ll need to feed the user_id of the user to the function. I think something like this will work:

    <?php echo xprofile_get_field_data( '7', $comment->user_id ); ?>

    Glancing at the code and I’m noticing that site admins will see everything. If the filter’s not working for you, make sure you’re logged in as a non-admin.

    etiviti – Does your external installation of bbPress store data in the same database as your buddypress install? If not I think you will need a new $wpdb class in order to specify the right database creds.

    Hey Peter – that sounds not only like overlap, it sounds like total duplication! If you can post code or send to my gmail (my bp.org username at gmail) it would be awesome. If I can merge the two, we could share credit on the plugin repo.
