    Good questions all. You may be the first to answer them. :)

    Post a trac ticket for the mod notification not turning off issue. It’ll just get lost and not fixed otherwise.

    jvinch, ok. I’m not sure what else to tell you about this except create a new file, name it anything you want .php, drop it in /mu-plugins. The plugin should contain the function bp_blogs_record_post() as it is in bp-blogs.php.

    1) rename the function something else: jvinch_bp_blogs_record_post()

    2) add the filter code that skips recording blog posts for blog id 2

    3) unhook the current bp_blogs_record_post() and hook up your modified function instead

    4) test it out

    #2 above would be somthing like:

    if ($blog == 2) return;

    #3 would be:

    remove_action( 'publish_post', 'bp_blogs_record_post' );
    add_action( 'publish_post', 'jvinch_bp_blogs_record_post' );

    You are doing all this on a dev server for testing of course.

    I was taking a look at this again to give you a sample and it turns out I was looking at some code from r805 or so. Don’t know why it’s hanging around on my dev server. Never mind what I said. That function bp_blogs_record_activity() doesn’t have any hooks we can use.

    It looks like the only fn we can hook is bp_blogs_record_post() which calls the record activity fn. That is in bp-blogs.php if you want to take a look at it.

    I gotta scrape my dev server clean and re-install from the latest trunk. Probably more weirdness hanging around. The basic concept of modifying bp’s behavior without modifying the core is to copy a function, change it to do what you want and hook up your new function in place of the old one.

    The mod to make would occur right below or above line #377. Detecting donncha’s site wide tags plugin and not doing anything with that post on that blog. Same idea for you on blog id 2. That line # is from r832.

    Let me get back to you with some suggested sample code after I clean up my dev server.

    On the main page when I click the “Sign up” button, it goes to /register… and 404’s.

    /register? Can you give me a link to your site? What is a Clark Connect box?

    I’m guessing ‘main page’ is the bp home theme. There are three places a user can choose to signup from there. The admin bar ‘sign up’ the home theme header area ‘login’ and ‘sign up’ buttons and if you are using the welcome widget it has a ‘create account’ button. All three launch wp-signup.php as far as I can see.

    Using the url mysite.org/register running the home theme gets the normal registration functions in the left sidebar.

    Anything else is a config problem on that box that isn’t allowing normal bp behavior.

    Howdy. There’s a function in bp-blogs.php called bp_blogs_record_activity(). It’s triggered by 3 actions in bp. If you look at it, it does some setup stuff and then calls bp’s basic ‘record this stuff as an activity function’ bp_record_activity().

    The three actions that trigger bp_blogs_record_activity() are listed underneath the fn.

    Do:

    remove_action( 'bp_blogs_new_blog_post', 'bp_blogs_record_activity' );
    add_action('bp_blogs_new_blog_post', 'NOADMIN_bp_blogs_record_activity' );

    Copy the function bp_blogs_record_activity() to NOADMIN_bp_blogs_record_activity(), filter yourself out inside the NOADMIN version and allow all other normal activity to occur.

    I’ve got a little utility plugin that is collecting things like this for my mods. No core hacking since Andy has all sorts of hooks builtin for us to use. Like this case.

    Howdy. The option on the groups admin page ‘notify group members…’ should default to ‘no’ on page reload. I haven’t used it but it looks like what that option refers to are changes on that specific page only. New Group News! That kinda thing. It looks like the purpose is to give you the option each time you change something there to send out notifications if you choose to.

    As I was looking in the code, at what that was supposed to do, I realized that it would never do that. No notifications could ever go out. Bug in the code.

    At the moment that little option doesn’t do anything. I’ll post the problem in Trac. Hey you found a bug! We gotta start passing out little ‘flyswatter’ badges to people. Maybe “Have you swatted a bug today?” pins. :)

    I know. Take your meds Burt.

    Not sure why this thread got overlooked.

    As far as I know the choice of subdirectory or subdomain as an mu blog option on install doesn’t matter. I have seen complications where people install mu in a subdirectory under the document root and then have chosen the subdirectory blog option.

    I haven’t been able to pin it down but some weirdness crops up in that case. In both cases it’s been difficult to determine exactly what the problem was. They had difficulties getting their shared hosting provider to cooperate. It’s kinda tough to pin things down when getting access to error logs is like trying to get an audience with the pope.

    There are no ‘subdomain’ only specific requirements.

    Have you looked at the actual db tables? Is there really just 2 members per group all of a sudden? Then these notifications get generated. Never looked at where the notifications live. Lemme go look…

    What rev you on daniel?

    These two members per group, just an admin and a mod? The members left in each group have any similarities other than you in common?

    @burtadsit

    Participant

    The only problems are ‘news’, ‘members’, ‘groups’ buttons in the home theme? All else works ok? I don’t know what blog.php has to do with anything. If you hit ‘news’ bp uses ‘index.php’ to display latest posts on that blog.

    If members and groups directories aren’t running at all then you should be getting an error msg.. ok stop..

    I re-read your msg and you are getting 404s but things are running. Ok. It helps to actually read the other person’s msg. (sigh)

    The 404’s are a known problem when running the various directories. A workaround to eliminate the 404s is to create pages with the same slug as the directory slugs.

    members

    groups

    blogs

    Three pages with the above slugs should eliminate the 404s. They just serve as placeholders.

    If the db needs upgrading it will auto do so when you visit the admin backend of wpmu. I don’t know how other keep up to date but I have a local copy of the SVN image of bp, mu and bbpress. I also have a test server running locally and I update that manually from my SVN working copy of all three. I used to just work off the SVN image as my dev server but that got confusing for SVN and me.

    When I’m ready I update the live server. I’m in the process of creating a dev server on the same box as the live server. I did run across this little thing and thought I might try it out: http://dentedreality.com.au/2008/12/managing-wordpress-with-subversion/

    When running on windows you have to manually enter the subdomains in the ‘hosts’ file.

    “C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts”

    A sample from my hosts file:

    127.0.0.1 ourcommoninterest.dev

    127.0.0.1 burt.ourcommoninterest.dev

    127.0.0.1 waldo.ourcommoninterest.dev

    127.0.0.1 beckysblog.ourcommoninterest.dev

    127.0.0.1 localhost

    The reason is you are not running a DNS server to resolve the domains to an ip address.

    I have a signature running on other forums that reads: “You’re not doing anything wrong. Stop trying to do it right.”

    In this case that’s appropriate. The stock behavior for mu and bp is to redirect back to the original url. But we don’t have to live with stock behavior. We got code.

    The offending hunk we’re talking about is the various places that bp allows a user to logout. In all cases it has ‘redirect_to=’ site_url(). This takes the user back to where the logged out from. site_url() is what you want to change.

    You need to say get_blog_option(1, ‘siteurl’) instead of that. That gets the url for the root/home blog in mu, blog id 1.

    You’ll see two logout lines wherever bp allows a logout option. One is for mu 2.7 and it reads: wp_logout_url(site_url()). The other just reads ‘redirect_to=’ site_url()

    The mu 2.7 version adds some security stuff to the mix and needs that wp_logout_url() call. In both cases and in all spots change ‘site_url()’ to get_blog_option(1, ‘siteurl’) and things will work as you want them to work.

    I see the header in the home theme, two places in the member theme and the admin bar as spots to change.

    header.php - www/wp-content/themes/buddypress-home line 48 <?php if ( function_exists('wp_logout_url') ) : ?>

    header.php - www/wp-content/member-themes/buddypress-member line 46 <?php if ( function_exists('wp_logout_url') ) : ?>

    bp-core-adminbar.php - www/wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-core line 81 if ( function_exists('wp_logout_url') ) {

    bp-core-templatetags.php - www/wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-core line 55 if ( function_exists( 'wp_logout_url' ) ) {

    Those line numbers may not be exact in all cases but it’ll be in the general vicinity.

    The problem that you have to be aware of is that you are modifying stuff that will get overwritten when you update your bp installation. You’ll have to make sure that if you use SVN things get merged in properly and if you’re not using SVN then you’ll manually have to go around and put the mods back in each time.

    Glad you got things going life2000. Yes, more detailed error messages would help alot. As it stands now a problem could be related to just about anything. Trac here I come.

    The only reason I asked about the avatar is to see what was happening before the last stage of creating a group. Tell me where you installed wpmu. Let me guess:

    You are on a shared host. wpmu is installed in a subdirectory under the document root using the subdirectory option instead of the subdomain option for wpmu.

    All ‘news’ does is show the blog posts from the current blog in chronological order.

    <?php echo bp_core_get_avatar( $user->user_id, 1 ) ?></a>

    The above is from bp-core-directory-members.php. You’ll have to put `$post->post_author in there.

    All these errors seem to be related to the fact that the various components in bp aren’t initializing properly. Your setup is like:

    ../<document root>/<wpmu subdirectory>/wp-content/mu-plugins/<bp installed here>

    ../<document root>/<wpmu subdirectory>/wp-content/member-themes/buddypress-member

    ../<document root>/<wpmu subdirectory>/wp-content/themes/buddypress-home

    ?

    elishahong, this forum is running with a cache operating. You have to refresh your browser to see your post. Sending your post and returning to the original page doesn’t do that. You had about half a dozen messages saying the same thing. :) Sometimes you see your post and sometimes you don’t. Gotta mention that to the powers that be.

    Let me go look at the source of those errors you are getting.

    Perhaps I shouldn’t have so gleefully stolen sambauer’s magic clickable url function. I just remembered that I have to go over to bbpress forums and ask his help with some xmlrpc stuff in bbpress.

    Maybe he won’t notice (shhhh…)
