In reply to: Seeking advice for in root or in sub-folder install
@bpuser44
Glad you like my sports fundraising concept. Initially my focus is signing up sports organizations. In some cases that’s the school, other times it’s a non-profit organization and other times its the overriding association that might have a dozen or more teams. I’m basically trying to build a platform that will work for any organization that needs to raise money. In fact, I’m having some good success with cheerleading, swimming and dance teams right now too. It could certainly work for a tennis team too;-)I think it makes sense to move to an all BP site. You’re not going to lose any of the previous benefit since BP can be configured to have all the features of your previous HTML pages.
To do what I described, you create a page and assign it a page-template (see WordPress for page template details). The page template can show pretty much anything you want. Then, create a second blank page with the title “Blog” (or whatever you want to call your blog pages). Then, go to Setting->Reading. Set the “Front Page” to the page you created with the page-template. Then, set the “Posts page” to the blank “Blog” page you created. That will make your home page the page template and give you a blog page. I actually do have my blog linked, but only at the bottom of the page: http://givingsports.com/blog/ Plus, I haven’t done many posts yet;-)
There are a couple other ways to do your blog like this, but that was the easiest one I found and it worked well for me.
In reply to: Exposition AreaAt first I wondered if I should click on the link. I was wondering what was being exposed. So, is the basic concept of the site to give people a place to put their info?
In reply to: Group ImagesBP Gallery works well for it. oEmbed is another option if you want the image to be hosted somewhere else and just embedded in the stream.
In reply to: Seeking advice for in root or in sub-folder installYes, you can just do one blog even though you installed multi site. That’s what I do on http://www.givingsports.com (which I just launched).
The choice of using the original homepage or not is harder. However, you can keep your original home page and still have all the BP features around it. That’s kind of what I did on the site I just linked. I have a unique home page and then the blog is at http://www.givingsports.com/blog even though it’s all installed in the root of the domain.
In reply to: Seeking advice for in root or in sub-folder installI’m currently using WP multi site, but just have not enabled the blogs feature for users. So, it’s essentially a WP single user. The reason I enabled multi site is that I may want to use the blogs feature later, WP multisite has some extra options (like username validation), some plugins work with WPMU and not the other. Something to consider.
In reply to: GivingSports.comAnointed,
That’s exactly the idea. I’m going to launch a non-sports related one at http://www.givingsquare.com shortly. You could create a trip to Haiti group and have all the kids in church sign up for free. Then, they send out emails, post to twitter, facebook etc asking for people to support their trip. I’ve built it to track how much each person raises and report on all those details.It would be hard to put what I’ve done into a plugin. Right now it’s a bunch of different plugins and customizations of some existing ones. Now, the idea of a plugin to just create the paywall to join any BP install could work. It’s the integration of that with the requesting tools which gets a bit tricky.
justbishop,
Yep, that’s the core. Tools to invite people to support you, track who supports who and then a private BP group for those who contributed.In reply to: GivingSports.com@justbishop
Sorry. I reverted it back to a different version after testing was complete. That link will work now. Although, now to really see how it works you’ll have to fork over some $$. So, if you don’t want to do that, you can see essentially the same thing on my demo/development site: http://somelunch.com/register/accept-invitation/noemail/6/1In reply to: ClothUnderground.com – ”Launching” TomorrowI like the groups their apart of. Would you mind sharing your code for that? I’d probably want it in a widget in the sidebar instead of under the profile, but could be adapted from your code I’m sure.
In reply to: Getting User’s Full Name from user_idThank you Jeff. I figured it would be something simple, but couldn’t find it. I tried all sorts of bp_core_get combinations and couldn’t find that one. Thanks!
In reply to: Sign Up Tab is MissingTurn on registration in the BP or WP admin (depending on how you installed it.
In reply to: Getting User’s Full Name from user_idI found this little function:
$user_test = new BP_Core_User( $referring_user_id );Has the full name, but you still have to go through all the xprofile fields. Plus, is it ok to call the user info this way? Will it have problems down the line.
Another option is to sync the display_name with the name in the BP profile field, but I’m not sure the best way to do that and that could be problematic if they make changes to the name later.
Anyone else run into this issue?
In reply to: WordCamp Houston?Sorry. No Houston for me, but I will be going to WordCamp Utah (August 28) and WordCamp Las Vegas (October 23).
In reply to: I Could Kiss You.from display where?
In reply to: I Could Kiss You.Wow, a kiss? That’s a new form of payment. I’ll be reading @justbishop‘s threads more carefully now;-)
This is addressed 100 times on here. You have to enable registrations to make it stop redirecting. In the admin it’s under General->Settings for WP and under Options for WPMU.
In reply to: ClothUnderground.com – ”Launching” TomorrowIt took me a second to get the recycle symbol. I thought they were birds at first. Then, I got they were arrows. Then, I saw the tagline and made the connection. Maybe if it were more triangle I would have gotten it quicker.
In reply to: email verification not sendingDid you try all the options in this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/email-notification-not-working/?topic_page=2&num=15 ?
In reply to: ClothUnderground.com – ”Launching” TomorrowLooks great. I’m in the same home stretch. I’m finishing 2 more features planning to officially launch it on Monday. Woot!
Anyway, just a few thoughts on your home page. I like how you have the 3 things that people can do on your site listed there at the top. The problem is that all 3 look the same and so I skipped over them and kept going down. I’d create a different image for each of the 3 things that will attract my eye and make me want to read what it is. Then, I can identify which I belong with and go from there. Along those same lines, you might want to consider changing it from the verb to the noun. Say Shopper instead of Shop and Seller instead of Sell. I think people relate to that better and will click through knowing which noun they associate with when they visit your site.
I hope this helps.
In reply to: How do you Remove the ”Request Membership” Nav Link?I was able to do a little digging and figured this out. For some reason I always skip the files in the main BP folder. No wonder I’m missing so much. Anyway, here’s the code in case someone else wants to do it:
//REMOVE the Request Membership Group Nav
//Nav for this is found in buddypress/bp-groups.php on line 407
function remove_request_membership_nav() {
global $bp;bp_core_remove_subnav_item( $bp->groups->slug, ‘request-membership’ );
}
add_action( ‘wp’, ‘remove_request_membership_nav’, 2 );In reply to: Template Notice on Registration ErrorIt was easy. Luckily I was able to figure it out. Plus I could have done most of it in the theme too. The real key was that I needed to figure out how the errors were being passed on the registration page. Then, I figured they had to be in $bp and they were. Here’s the code I used in bp-custom.php
function registtration_screen_message_on_error() {
The message I want to appear for the user.
}
add_action( ‘template_notices’, ‘registtration_screen_message_on_error’ );To get the errors and only display it if there are errors I used $bp->signup->errors
Just thought I’d share.
In reply to: Is it possible to get only the avatar-url ?@odiggy Try the Donate button on one of r-a-y’s plugins: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/oembed-for-buddypress/
r-a-y, Thanks for the extra answer. I started trying to document some of the bp_core_fetch_avatar function so that I could add it to the codex: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/changing-avatar-size-sometimes-creates-fuzzy-avatars/ This is a good addition.
In reply to: bettercodes.orgInteresting way to get to the registration page with just the username. I also like how you dealt with the only lowercase username issue. You might also check out this solution that r-a-y put together: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2207
Page looks pretty good, but as you said in your blog, I’m not sure it completely communicates your message of what the site can do for new users.
The beta release of the BP oembed plugin I think will allow pictures to be embedded from outside sources in profile fields. It’s not an upload, but might be better than an upload depending on what you’re doing.
In reply to: Come RecommendedThanks @mercime I wondered what that other option in WordPress was for. Learn something new everyday. I guess it also makes sense that I could create a page template with the list of blog posts that could basically be like the normal blog index and style it however I want. Good stuff!
@jeremylyn I was surprised that it worked for me too. At least it told me it worked. Might just want to wrap the links to complete the courses in the is_user_logged_in() function and only display them if the user is logged in.
A new set of eyes always finds some bugs. That’s what we’re here for.
r-a-y,
Why isn’t this part of the core default theme? Seems like an easy decision, no?
