@keneticimages Watch for the Achievements plugin that’s being developed: http://byotos.com/ It looks like it will be a pretty cool badge plugin.
In reply to: Why is it a bad idea to copy “bp-default” theme?Boone,
On BP updates, any files you add to your child theme you’ll have to compare against the update and manually update them with the new features right? So, if I overwrite header.php in my child theme, then when BP updates, I’ll have to compare my header.php with the new release to see if I should copy over any new features right? However, like you said if it’s all just done with css, then you don’t have to worry.
Thanks for all the great feedback. I think I will be avoiding a demo. This is in the developer track, so I’m going to have to try and balance features and functions with demoing cool sites. Should be fun!
In reply to: Question to change registrationCan’t you just change name to “first name” and then add another field called “last name” and then you’d have it the way you describe.
In reply to: Best hosting for buddypress@koms
I started this group on the site to talk about BuddyPress hosting: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-hosting/forum/ It could still use some more submissions from people who use BuddyPress and their hosting environments/experience, but it’s a good start. It’s probably in your theme file under index.php or footer.php Although, I couldn’t see what you’re talking about really. At least not at the bottom of the page. Also, the toolbar thing at the bottom isn’t working quite right in Google Chrome. The display is off.
In reply to: Changing default INDEX?@bpuser44 It’s really simple. I did it as one page template that was set as the home page. Then, in the page template you just add this code:
if ( is_user_logged_in() ) {
//Content you want people to see if they’re logged in
} else {
//Content you want people to see if they’re not logged in
}In reply to: Changing default INDEX?Almost always multiple ways to do it in WordPress. Depends on what type of changes you might want to make in the future.
In reply to: Creating pages without having them appear in tabsJust create a child theme: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
Then, you’ll want to overwrite the header.php file on line 79. Here’s the documentation for the wp_list_pages: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_list_pages the exclude parameter should work for you. If you don’t know the pages’ id, you can use this plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-show-ids/
In reply to: user blogsmultisite is the new keyword you want. This is a good resource: http://wptheming.com/2010/03/wordpress-3-0-enable-network/
Sounds like you can do pretty much everything you want to do with 2 themes. One theme would be for the main site. The second theme would apply to all the subsites. With the theme you’ll be able to add links for users on the subsite to go to the main sites forum. In fact, with the theme on the subsite you can do incorporate whichever BuddyPress features you want them to have visible. You can either modify an existing theme or create a child theme from the default one: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
Depending on if you want the forums to be part of groups or not, you may want to investigate doing a stand alone install of bbpress or some of the global forum plugins I’ve seen mentioned.
In reply to: Paid Help?@rogercoathup I’ve added you to my BuddyPress Twitter list. I’d be happy to add anyone else that’s interested and tweets about BuddyPress.
In reply to: GivingSports.com@keneticimages Actually it’s all pretty much a custom integration with BrainTree as the payment processor. Here’s basically what I did:
-Redirect after user account creation to the secured cc page (just a page template)
-Process cc on that page using BrainTree’s API
-After processing a successful contribution I redirect to another “Thank You” page templateIn reply to: Paid Help?It seems that most people have just posted the jobs in the forums. I think there use to be a place, but if I remember right it’s gone or not functioning now.
Once you post the job, the mods will usually lock your thread. I’d reach out to some developers too. There easy to find on twitter. Here’s a Twitter list I’ve started of BuddyPress peeps: http://twitter.com/#/list/techguy/buddypress
In reply to: Kick (but not ban) a user from a a group?Nice work. It felt like something was missing from that moderation screen. Good work.
In reply to: Blog Theme / Buddypress ThemeYes it is possible. Did you need the blog to be the root blog or is it another subdomain or subfolder blog? There are a number of different options depending on how you’ve setup the blog and which blog you mean.
In reply to: Notification email if my Buddy write a PostI’ve never seen a plugin that can do this. This plugin hooks onto the comment action: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subscribe-to-comments/ So, it might be a good place to start to write a new plugin.
In reply to: How to Optimize Server SpaceThis might be a good place to start: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/improving-performance/
You can use BP on a regular WP install. Just there are certain features (like the domain limiting) that come with WP multisite that aren’t available on the single install. You can always upgrade your regular wordpress install to multisite and then use it like a single WP install. That’s what I’m doing right now.
It’s built into WPMU (now called WP 3.0 Multisite). Just go to Super Admin->Options->Limited Email Registrations. Not sure about WP Single Blog mode.
In reply to: Setting up registration with buddypress and s2memberFrom my experience with s2member you have to have the PayPal buttons first, have them pay. Then after they pay on PayPal they are redirected to a registration page where you can have them fill out all the forms. I don’t believe you can do it the other way around with s2member. Although, they’ve created some really advanced scripting that might make it possible, but by default the order is as I describe above. I’m guessing it would be hard to change.
I’ve actually done as you describe on http://www.givingsports.com I basically just redirect the user after the signup is complete to a credit card page where I collect the money. Then, after collecting the money I redirect them to a Thank You page which lists all the things they can do on the site. However, I had to do a custom integration with a merchant processor (BrainTree) in my case to make it happen. If my site bombs, maybe I’ll make it into a plugin;-)
In reply to: Manual Upgrade1. Test the upgrade on a backup server so you can test plugin compatibility first
2. Make Good Backups before the upgradeOtherwise, manually should actually be less risky of an upgrade than the auto upgrade.
In reply to: I need ideas for theme creation. How about a theme focused on…
-Groups
-Forums
-Blogs
-etcBasically, make the theme really expose certain BP functions. Like in my case, I’ve modified it to be VERY Group centric.
In reply to: Changing default INDEX?Why not just use a child theme and modify the index.php to show whatever you want the page to be? You could also make it show one thing for logged in and one thing for not logged in. You probably could even look at referring page or set a cookie or something to know if it’s the first time they’ve been or not.
In reply to: Is there a way to rename groups?Just create a language file and change all the references to group: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/
