In reply to: What is the best dedicated econmic hosting for MU?
@mrbeno You might want to check through this BP Hosting group: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-hosting/forum/ Still a new group, but some good information to get you started.

Your functions.php file should contain the folowing:
`<?php
//Deals with uppercase username signup problems…maybe
function my_sanitize_user( $username, $raw_username, $strict ) {
$username = $raw_username;
$username = wp_strip_all_tags( $username );
$username = remove_accents( $username );
// Kill octets
$username = preg_replace( ‘|%([a-fA-F0-9][a-fA-F0-9])|’, ”, $username );
$username = preg_replace( ‘/&.+?;/’, ”, $username ); // Kill entities// If strict, reduce to ASCII for max portability.
if ( $strict )
$username = preg_replace( ‘|[^a-z0-9 _.-@]|i’, ”, $username );// Consolidate contiguous whitespace
$username = preg_replace( ‘|s+|’, ‘ ‘, $username );return $username;
}
add_filter( ‘sanitize_user’, ‘my_sanitize_user’, 100, 3 );?>`
At least that’s what mine has and it works fine.
I’m also using this plugin to notify users if this would be a problem for them also: http://buddydev.com/buddypress/creating-a-buddypress-wordpress-username-availability-checker-for-your-site/ Although, I think I modified the script so it would only warn for certain use cases. I also did just realize that it doesn’t work for IE. Haven’t had a chance to see why yet. So, it’s good that I have both.

Check out this Trac ticket on the subject: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2207In reply to: Wp-login.php custom screen plugin?I’ve been using: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dbd-login-style/ It’s not perfect, but works ok. I thought I saw another one released recently, but I can’t remember where.
In reply to: remove password confirmationSerious? Password confirmation is not superfluous at all. Unless you want to be answer a ton of support requests because they think they typed the right password but in fact didn’t.
In reply to: Cron Tasks with BuddyPressDo you know of any plugins that implement these types of cron? I learn better looking at other example code and building it from there.
In reply to: Cron Tasks with BuddyPressThanks Travel-Junkie. That looks like it will work well hooked to a specific function (ie. user creation). I’ll look into it for some cases.
How about something that runs nightly and sends an email to a group of users based on a BP query of the users? Is there a way to schedule this in BP?
In reply to: How do I invite friends?Try this plugin: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/invite-anyone/
In reply to: Quick question about “closed networks”You should be able to do most of this. Depending on how sophisticated you want to be with the auto group join, it may take some coding to make it happen, but I’ve seen others do it.
The second part is a little more tricky depending on how you define not integrating with other users. You can turn off friending and messaging. Basically you can make it so they can only communicate in groups. If you wanted only groups plus, communication directly with people that are members of those groups, that would be harder to implement.
In reply to: WordCamp NYCVery tempting. Looks like a great WordCamp
In reply to: BP Developer Chat Todayyou’ll be missed paulhastings0
In reply to: Adding Network after BP is already installedYou can definitely enable it after the fact. Here’s a tutorial: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-enable-multi-site-option-in-wordpress-3-0/ I’d just test it before you do it since the change might affect some of the plugins you are using or other features of the site.
In reply to: Activity stream repliesSeems like the jquery could be added to the bp-default theme and then everyone could enjoy the feature.
In reply to: Gallery /2x Galleries??BPDev has a paid plugin that can do the first step: http://buddydev.com/buddypress/introducing-bp-gallery-rc4-for-buddypress-time-to-get-stable-in-next-week-now/ It requires a modification to the plugin, but the details to do so are in the forums. I haven’t seen the second part yet, but I think the BP Media plugin is working on that.
In reply to: Verified accounts?Seems like a simple enough plugin to create. I’m not sure it makes since in the privacy plugin though.
In reply to: Remove Favorite buttonLook in your theme files and remove the reference to it. In a child theme it’s probably somewhere in the activity folder.
In reply to: Customize group featuresTry this link to change it to the forums instead of the activity: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/changing-group-tab-display-defaults#post-55449
I think you can turn on or off the reply button for forums in the BP admin, but they aren’t completely integrated that way. A reply in the activity won’t appear in the forum. So, that’s why it’s disabled by default (I think).
In reply to: Post DateThis is really a WordPress question, but it is possible. You can find the documentation to do it: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/the_time
In reply to: BuddyPress Share It button live@modemlooper I had a need for buttons like this for another area of my website. The javascript was the key element I was missing. Thanks!
In reply to: Avatar upload failed on www.buddypress.orgDoes BP.org support the upload? I think you have to do a gravatar if you want an avatar, no?
In reply to: GivingSports.com@bowromir
I’ve built a bunch of custom elements to track the payments. It’s really one of the keys to the product. I track who contributed, which organization they contributed to and which person referred them to the site to contribute. Plus, I created the tools (with more on the way) for them to send out links with all the codes that will give that person credit for the referral.It is all collected in one merchant account (well 1 per site) and then I pay the organization monthly. Right now this is manual since it’s new, but I’m sure I’ll automate this in the future.
In reply to: No Blog ButtonYou need to enable WP Multisite. This link should help: http://wptheming.com/2010/03/wordpress-3-0-enable-network/
In reply to: GivingSports.comThanks mercime. I love frisbee, so it was fun to get some cool shots.
I don’t think it’s so much about what BrainTree has that others don’t, but I did find it really easy to implement. I evaluated a half dozen other options and they all were harder and some felt pretty shady. I certainly could have done it with many others. Let’s just say the credit card processing business is ugly. I liked how BrainTree was generally above board on their pricing, no contracts, I own the data, etc and so that’s why I went with them. There supports been very responsive too so I’ve been happy with my choice.
In reply to: GivingSports.comPretty cool. I just had a story which highlighted my 2 BuddyPress sites: http://www.lasvegasbusinesspress.com/articles/2010/08/24/news/iq_37502429.txt Not to mention a couple cool pictures of me laying out for a frisbee.
In reply to: How long is history kept“until your database explodes”
I’d watch that. Is that like the “Will it blend” session they’re having at WordCamp Utah?
