    I’d definitely look at s2member. It hijacks the normal user creation process and that’s probably why it doesn’t have the capability.

    I’d guess that many of them will work on the new version of 1.2.6, but certainly there are some that will break with the upgrade. So, you should do a test upgrade on a test system and see what breaks and what doesn’t before upgrading on a production site. Oh, and be sure to have good backups so you can roll it back it something goes wrong.

    Also, if you want to do paid subscriptions you should really look at using the s2member plugin. It’s as simple and straightforward as you’re going to find to set up a paid section of BuddyPress.

    Since you saved me the time looking for this, I’ll throw in the other 2 I already knew:
    groups_is_user_mod( $bp->loggedin_user->id, $bp->groups->current_group->id)
    groups_is_user_admin( $bp->loggedin_user->id, $bp->groups->current_group->id)

    Plus, that’s the code to get the logged in userid and current groupid.

    @djpaul Could you describe a little more what makes it happen?

    In the case above, I’m calling messages_new_message() on an admin page when it loads based upon the variables that are being passed into that page. I don’t actually call messages_new_message() until the page is about half loaded. Is messages_new_message() returning some data before the header() call? What’s the solution to get around this?

    Looks like other places talk about white space in front of or after the PHP tags. Any other things that can cause this error?

    Don’t be surprised if your log file is what’s taken up your space. Look through the folders and tell us what files are taking up the space and maybe we can help you more.

    “as far as I’m aware BP does not create any roles or specific capabilities.”

    Except for Groups and Forums where users can be given more roles.

    In order…
    -Depends what you mean, but this is a built in featured to BP
    -This is pretty much a requirement for BP. Although, you can choose how big or small you want the profiles to be
    -Groups in BP should satisfy this. You can make them public, hidden or private.
    -This is a widget in the default BP theme
    -Just turn it on in the BP settings
    -There are a couple picture plugins. One that’s paid that’s pretty good from BuddyDev.com Another one that’s getting really close called BP Media. They have a version available now, but it’s basic. In a month? or so it will have even more features.
    -These can just be added to your theme anywhere that you think would be good.

    So, pretty much everything but the pictures is available by default with BP. The pictures need the plugin.

    Oh yes, why’s the Facebook login button missing from the home page? It looks like you’re not showing the top login/facebook thing on the home page on purpose. I’d leave it up there. Nothing wrong with having 2 places people can log into the site on the home page.

    Nice looking site. Has a fresh feel to it. I like it.

    A few simple comments. On the main page the “Lost your pasword” and “register” links are so close together they look like one. Seems like you’d want to drive registration, but as is I don’t think they’ll see that link at all.

    The social network page is nice, but it doesn’t have a very good call to action as far as joining the social network or giving me the option to start doing the things that it lists. There’s one link at the top to join which I pretty much missed at first glance and only realized later that it was there. Although, if I didn’t know web design and BP I might not have ever found it. Then, there’s the link on that page to start a blog. I’d suggest adding some nice big buttons on that page which invite people to join and know clearly where to click to join.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Or look at other plugins that create notifications and learn from their code. Maybe the follower plugin could be one example that I think does an admin bar notification.

    @crashutah

    I heard it was removed because it was showing a bunch of spam users that had joined. The only who is online widget that I know of is the default one that comes with the default theme.

    You can just disable groups in the BP configuration page. Only problem is that right now, Groups are needed to create forums since forums are tied to each group. The workaround for this is to do a stand alone BBpress forum install. Do a search on the forums and there are a lot of forum topics that talk about installing BBpress separate from BP.

    Right now there’s no really easy way to modify the registration process that way. it’s possible if you know PHP (Boone’s done something close to it), but it’s not very easy right now. Or if you don’t code and have some cash, you could pay a developer to add this feature for you.

    @crashutah

    This is a known problem. The workaround for now is to upload it to http://en.gravatar.com/ Just do it for the email address that you used to register on BP.org and your avatar will be changed to whatever you upload to Gravatar.

    There may be some plugins available that do some of this, but I haven’t kept up on it. I think some get close, but not exactly what you’re talking about. I think they do pieces.

    That said, it’s pretty easy to add this using the BP Group API: https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/group-extension-api/

    It can ask for information at signup and then you can add a tab on each group for updating it and then display it wherever you want.

    Chat going on now. Boone has pulled out his punting foot.

    Lots of ways. Some easier than others.

    One way might be to use the Group Email Subscription plugin: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-group-email-subscription/

    You can have your settings at sending immediate activity and it will get emailed to you.
