Previous may have mislead:
IN addition to Dashboard/Settings/Buddypress there ought to be
Dashboards/BuddyPress and so
Dashboard/BuddyPress/xxx is also possibl; perhaps that’s where you expected Courseware to be – but I don’t see that it’s a problem if it is at Settings/Courseware if you have access to the settings you need.
Hi @mercime
Thanks but I’m not entierly sure this issue has anything to do with Commons in a Box.
I started from a fresh instal with Commons in A Box and BP 1.6.4 and everything is fine. Something happened in upgrading to 1.7 on an existing working BP site that went wrong …
I don’t think the solution is custom code and I wouldn’t say that the code ‘doesn’t work’. It clearly works for most people. It’s just something that went wrong with the instal (and seems to happen for a few people but not the majority). For my problem it was with the latest version(s) of BP but I also recall having it with 1.6.1.

GordonHI
The correct place for the BuddyPress settings menu is Dashboards/Setting/BuddyPress
It may have been somewhere else in much earlier versions.
I don’t know anything about Courseware but I don’t see how it could be further nested under BuddyPress in the Dashboard – I’ve never seen any WP settings file except immediately under settings.
It would be up to the builder of the Courseware plug in to decide where to put it but the options would seem to my unsophisticated eyes to be Dashboard/ or Dashboard/Settings/
Hi
Having been a newby 6 months ago and having set up a BP installation a couple of times now with a few months in between I would say that setting up Buddy Press involves following the instructions VERY carefully. BP 1.7 makes some of that easier but it is a touch more involved than installing and configuring a typical WP theme.Your post above is not very clear about what is and isn’t working. For the more technie guys to help you you should also provide your WP version, the theme you are using and your URL.
One thing to check is if you have turned on the components that you need to do the things you want (given that BP 1.7 intstal leaves a good few of them turned off for the good reason that not everyone needs them).
Look at the topics on this page to see if one addresses your problem: https://codex.buddypress.org/version/1-7/
Sorry I can’t be more specific but a. I’m not an expert and b. you haven’t described in enough detail what you did, what you expected to see and what you aren’t seeing.
Sorry this is not too much help.
Yes. Just did FTP. Thanks.
Resolved.Or Gravity Forms (paid plugin) + Gravity Forms Directory Add on
Thanks
1. AMU is a plug-in called Add Multiple Users which https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/add-multiple-users/ It enables a CSV import of users. [Sorry for not being clearer in the OP].2. Users added manually – ie using the WordPress new user screen – and users Registering using the front end – work fine in BuddyPress – [both those entered before and after doing the CSV import with AMU) ie the user has a profile page and can edit it.
3. All the users imported using AMU have all fields complete including first, last, nick and display names. The only empty fields are www, jabber and AIM.
4. Users from both the CSV import and the manual user added from the Users_Add_New_Screen screen are added to a BP groups using @boonebgorges‘ Buddy Press Group Management plug in. All appear in the group member list (and all members lists) but the ones bulk entered using CSV file do not have profiles.
I’m going to try doing another import and see if I get the same result.
Hi
Search being broken is a known problem it says elsewhere. You can use Google to search the site add site:buddypress.org to your search. You can use a plug in like Members List to display the data of all members or those that meet certain criteria on some other page on your site.

I have the same problem which I will describe as follows
1. User registers by completing the form [they are at sitename.com/register]
2. They get a page saying – you have registered and please check your email to activiate
3. Clicking on the link takes them to the page sitename.com/activate which says “Activate your Account.
Please provide a valid activation key. With the field ‘Activation key” and the button ‘Activate’.
Copying the activation key from the email does NOT get rid of this page.
5. However
a. checking from and admin account shows that the user has been successfully registered (not surprising)
b. the user can navigate the sit without restriction – which they could not do before clicking on the activation email. So presumably the account has been activated – but they user is told that they still need to enter the activation key. They can log in and can navigate the site. Only the wouldn’t know that. How to fix this? None of the advice above seems much use. Last thing I want to do is instal an unnecessary plug in when presumably this is supposed to work.
I am update to date with software as follows
WP 3.4.2
BP 1.6.1Problem observed in Chrome and Firefox.
Thanks
Thanks @Trailmix5.
Yes I’ve read your post a couple of times and the tips and responses.
I am not using DAP. I get the same result logged in as a user or administrator ie– users added directly into WordPress after BP installation show up under their not very friendly username; they have no
– users added before BP installation show up with display name, have profile pages and prior existing meta data shows up on profile page.Anyone have an idea? @mercime?
[I note in the OP I said “When logged in as one of the new users:” – this is confusing and should be ignored. I thought for a moment there was a difference in behaviour between admin and new users but there is not.
Thanks for any tips.
Gordon
Similar problem but created new post in case different.
One more step required:
When I went into existing groups I had to turn off Discussion Forums for each group and turn back on to get it to work.
After experimenting with some of the suggestions here https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/buddypress-forums-group-forums-not-working/?topic_page=2&num=15 [which may work for others?] I deleted BuddyPress and bbPress and resintalled only BuddyPress.
I think created a new group and turned off enable forum and then turned it back on.
At last I have created my first topic.
NB when deleting and reinstalling BuddyPress
a. for some reason the BuddyPress and bbPress directories (folders) were not deleted [ie viewing using FTP program …./Plugins/BuddyPress still existed – so I renamed that folder even tho FTP says it doesn’t exist. To short cut that I deleted the bbPress folder using FTP and I also made sure that bb-config.php was gone from the root.
b. When I reinstalled BuddyPress the ‘nag’ referred to in the Codex [https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/setting-up-a-new-installation/] did not appear and all my settings were as they had been EXCEPT that Group forums were not installed [which was what I wanted]. So I reinstalled them and hey presto everything seems to work.
Isn’t this what happens / is supposed to happen when you make the group a private group at [Group name/Admin/Settings – on the front of the site accessible if you are logged in as site administrator/group administrator?
” This is a private group
Only users who request membership and are accepted can join the group.
This group will be listed in the groups directory and in search results.
Group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.”for what it’s work sign up works under these conditions:
1. Standard theme, no plug ins, email from hotmail account
But not under these:
2. Preferred theme [Whitelight BuddyPress child from LabZip – which otherwise works fine], plugins on, GMX.com account.
I suspect the GMX account as an unusual kind of redirect appears to happen.
Once I get my other problem fixed I’ll try the preferred theme with GMX and see what happens.

I’m having the same problem [can’t create a new topic get the error message: error message: ”This group does not have a forum setup yet” with a much simpler and more up to date set up. BP1.6.1. 4 groups. Have disabled all plugins but BuddyPress and bbPress and changed to default theme. Will post a new thread.
This happens if you are logged in. Which you often will be while working on your site. Log out and try to register. Learnt the hard way myself.
I have the same issue.
WP 3.4.2; BP 1.6.1; Whitelight Parent theme 1.2.7, Whitelight BP Child theme from lab zips. Tested on Chrome and FF.
Not using S2 Member.Hi
That’s what I was doing when I found the problem with the WP Visual editor. However now both these issues are fixed – thanks! – still have issue with the other theme which is supposed to be BP compatbile but have taken it up with theme supplier.
