In reply to: New plugin: BuddyPress Mute
Hey djsteveb
Thanks for your feedback! As you say it could be a plugin conflict or maybe even a theme issue.
Not using GitHub isn’t a problem. Once you’ve completed all of your tests, can you post the issues you find on the plugin’s support forum? I’d be happy to take a look
In reply to: groups_get_groupmeta in functions.phpJust looked it up
* Filter SQL query strings to swap out the 'meta_id' column. * * WordPress uses the meta_id column for commentmeta and postmeta, and so * hardcodes the column name into its *_metadata() functions. BuddyPress, on * the other hand, uses 'id' for the primary column. To make WP's functions * usable for BuddyPress, we use this just-in-time filter on 'query' to swap * 'meta_id' with 'id.Seems as though it’s used to make WP
*_metadata()functions compatible with BP.In reply to: groups_get_groupmeta in functions.phpGood shout @shanebp.
Also, looking at the
groups_get_groupmeta()function definition, I’m wondering why we need to filter the query string withbp_filter_metaid_column_name?Anyway, alternatively, this may work but I haven’t tested:
$retval = get_metadata( 'group', $group_id, $meta_key, $single ); var_dump( $retval );Edit: Looks as though there is a reason BuddyPress uses
bp_filter_metaid_column_nameto filter the query. So my above might not work when it comes to BP.In reply to: groups_get_groupmeta in functions.phpThat’s strange. I’m assuming you’re passing it an actual group ID (integer)? That’s required. Can you
var_dumpwhat it’s returning? In reply to: Need Help Choosing Plugins for Website ConceptI agree it sounds as though you’ll need a bookmarking plugin as the “core”. There are most probably lots to choose from in the WordPress Plugin Directory. My advice is set up a WordPress site locally for testing, install BuddyPress and try out some of the bookmarking plugins to see which suits your idea best.
In reply to: Activation KeyThe activation key is emailed to each new member in the form on a link after they register on your site. Does that help?
In reply to: Buddypress pages not workingTry disabling all plugins and activating TwentyFifteen.
In reply to: Is anybody using Redis with Buddypress?I haven’t used Redis for caching but would be interested in what you find. Perhaps you could post your results here?
In reply to: wp next default theme 2016 in the wildI added some comments asking the main group to seriously consider BP and other plugins when choosing next default theme
Nice one @djsteveb! I hope TwentySeventeen takes BuddyPress into consideration too.
To the best of my knowledge, you can’t have 2 themes activated at the same time. You should choose a WordPress theme and then make use of the BuddyPress Template Hierarchy to customise the BuddyPress portion of your website.
In reply to: 500 Error when accessing wp-adminThis could be absolutely anything and I know that’s not what you wanted to hear. Try checking your .htaccess file, sometimes that can be a source of 500 errors.
In reply to: Is anybody using Redis with Buddypress?Check out the Persistent Object Caching article for a good overview of the various ways to cache.
In reply to: Buddy Press with Another Wp InstallYou may have some URL conflicts?
For example, I may have a page called WordPress here:
example.com/wordpress
Then if I install a second instance of WordPress in a sub dir called wordpress, I’d have:
example.com/wordpress
It’s all I can think of.
You’d need to think about your database too. That could cause some issues.

In reply to: Buddypress without followersPerhaps there’s a plugin conflict?
In reply to: Buddypress without followersUnless I’m mistaken, there must some thing else wrong because I’ve not found BuddyPress Followers to be problematic in that way. Are you sure you’re using the latest version?
You’ll probably want to dequeue the style sheet that comes with the plugin and then add your own styles to your theme’s style.css.
In reply to: filter activity loopYou should paste @shanebp’s code into your theme’s functions.php file. That’s where it should go.
In reply to: Buddypress without followersI use the plugin Buddypress followers, but is problematic
What did you find was wrong with it? It works well for me.
Check out Theme My Login. I’ve used it alongside BuddyPress many times and can say it works well.
In reply to: xProfile Rich Text Field pluginHave you opened a ticket on the xProfile Rich Text Field plugin’s support forum?
Instead of trying the newline characater, try
<br />or<p>.xProfile data is a BuddyPress thing and user meta is a WordPress thing. Which one you use will depend on whether you plan to always use BuddyPress. If not then taking the user meta approach will ensure your plugin will work on all WordPress installs (even when BuddyPress is deactivated).
In reply to: BuddyPress Sitemap? The best advice I can give is to look at how some of the already-available plugins do it. XML Sitemaps is a good one to learn from. It might not cover BuddyPress pages but I’ve used it in the past and it worked great for me.
In reply to: Create Function When Favorite Button ClickedSo, is that how the spam or favorite/un favorite buttons work?
Maybe. It will depend if you have JavaScript enabled in your browser. If you do, then Ajax will be working. If you don’t, it’s likely the traditional
POSTorGETmethods will be in operation.
