already knew where to create the file
cos it doesn’t really matter where you create a file it’s simply a plain ansi text file with a particular name, where it’s uploaded is what matters. Ideally you have a test install of your site on your localhost machine so you would create the file in /plugins/ so you upload from /plugins/ to /plugins/

What did seem to make a difference was downloading the Members Plugin and changing the roles for Administrator. A bunch of them were not checked, including the role of a Participant. I checked everything and was able to post again. I then updated to the latest version of bbPress.

With theme compatibility you shouldn’t ned do anything but activate BP and ensure the necessary pages exist, it will then work with your chosen theme.

Please disable all plugins not relevant – ‘not relevant’ means all but BP, it’s the first step in troubleshooting.

This is an issue that has arisen it seems with the bp groups extension re-write, it’s been mentioned on bbpress support but the solution or workarounds suggested best not followed, in due course @jjj will doubtless look into it and put a fix in place.

The pages are created when you first install/activate BP if you haven’t got one for activate then create an empty page with that name and in the BP settings screen under ‘Pages’ ensure you tell BP to use that page.

Not really clear what their solution was, presume they were referring to copying over the groups core directory from 1.7.3, this does not sound like a hugely sensible fix mixing files from two versions but probably won’t cause issues.

Not so, works fine running twentytwelve, have you tested with this theme and all plugins deactivated?

We can’t see a sites dashboard! copy the error here, but first ensure this isn’t a theme or plugin issue by disabling all plugins and activating a theme such as twentytwelve.
