As @hnla said try activating the Twenty Twelve theme and see if the issue persists. It may be your theme and if that is the case then you will need to request support from them.

Can you post your exact code snippet as you put it, not loading probably means a typo in the code.

You can get an example code from https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/is_user_logged_in , it pretty straight forward. Not much coding knowledge needed.

I just checked using the advice you have given and moved the check to the main loader file and for some reason it does make a difference because now the message is displayed as expected if BP is not installed so I’ll consider this the best practice in the future.
