In reply to: bp-Events plugins directory question
@Erwin-
I believe so. I was just looking at that possibility yesterday and will be experimenting with this myself today. Let me take a quick look and get back to you shortly.
In reply to: bp-Events plugins directory questionActually, come to think of it, maybe you should keep it in plugins/buddypress/. That will make it easier to add it to the BuddyPress menu in the backend.
In reply to: bp-Events plugins directory questionAs Nicloa suggests, placing your plugin in plugins/bp-events/ makes sense. Also, perhaps you should consider adding it to the BuddyPress menu in WP admin.
It wasn’t not being able to get it working, more of an observation.
Ah, I misunderstood.
Do you think it makes sense to comment out a version of the populate() that shows it taking an argument? Or just reference some files where that happens?
Of course, we don’t want to make the skeleton too complex or cluttered with comments. Perhaps what needs to be done is document custom component development in the codex. Sort of a simple users’ manual that references various functions that may be useful to examine as examples.
Andy, if you’re reading this, I would appreciate your thoughts and comments on this unofficial v1.2 of the skeleton component. Obviously, there’s no big rush.
DJPaul-
How’s your plugin development going with the v1.2 of the skeleton component? Did you get the populate function working?
In reply to: Full Name –> Display NameIt\’s not found in a form. It is located in the wp_bp_xprofile_fields table as a piece of data.
The function xprofile_add_signup_fields in the file bp-xprofile-signup.php extracts it from that table.
In reply to: How to upgrade to a trunk?First, please read this entire thread (all the posts) at least two times through before starting: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1994
Then read through these links:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WPMU

http://subversion.tigris.org/faq.html
https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/installing-through-svn/
Once you’ve done that, have a SVN client installed, and feel confident, go back to the first link in this post and follow the instructions.
From where do I get the most recent versions?
Those links are provided in the detailed instructions contained in the first link above.
In reply to: Hiding profile from guests?Read this thread and see if that helps:
Will see you there later. Off to a meeting.
This is what IRC is for people. #buddypress irc.freenode.net
We are posting around each other.
Good point, Burt!
Will it be safe to have latest SVN version on production site? I am not sure about it so asking..
Safe? Well, both the latest WPMU branch and BuddyPress trunk versions are still in development. It is always a gamble to use pre-release packages in production.
By the way, BuddyPress RC1 is not production ready. So, you take risks running it on a production site. Once BuddyPress has its first public release, you can then start deploying it into a production environment.
However, it sounds like you’re already using BP on a production site. You might want to consider temporarily shutting that aspect of your site until you either fix this issue, or until BuddyPress is officially released and you’ve upgraded to the pubic release version.
Getting back to the invite friends plugin issue, did you just delete it or did you first deactivate it then delete it? Have you done any updates to WPMU since deletion?
In reply to: Need Testers: Featured Members WidgetThanks for everyone’s comments!
It seems like this BuddyPress widget is good to go. I’m going to submit it to WP’s Plugin Repository. Once (if) accepted, I will post the new link to it here and remove the file from my server.
There was a recent change (Changeset 1295) to bp-blogs.php that stopped spam comments from being recorded in activity streams.
As Burt points out, newer versions of BP no longer have individual user activity tables, but I suppose this bug combined with an older version of BP could expose you to significant spam problems. I cannot verify this without looking at the older code. It is just a hunch.
I would recommend taking your site offline (if in production) and then upgrading your installation following the instructions found here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1994
In reply to: Add fields to wp_usersPeter-
I realize that you are not getting the answers you desire. You must have a sufficient understanding of and comfort level with PHP before you can delve too deeply into hacking your own solutions or coding your own theme templates. Otherwise, you need to use the stock WPMU and BuddyPress install and then customize with any plugins and 3rd-party themes that may be useful.
Since we do not have any idea of your particular coding skills, we are trying to point you in the right direction. Please realize that beyond a certain point, we cannot help you write your own custom code.
We all started at the beginning when it came to coding and then had another learning curve when it came to understanding the inner workings of WordPress and BuddyPress. It can be frustrating along the way but it is indeed possible to accomplish!
Here are a few more tips:
- Since you do seem to be wanting to group all user data within stock WP tables, you should search the WP and WPMU forums and ask your questions there
- Visit these WP Codex pages to help shed more light:
- https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference
- Google for tips on learning data-driven PHP coding
- Hire a 3rd-party developer who can do the work: hacking files directly or create a plugin that will accomplish what you’re after
Please hang in there and don’t give up hope.
In reply to: How to use full name, first name + last nameSpecifically, look at the file profile-loop.php and how it calls various functions to retrieve user profile data.
In reply to: How to use full name, first name + last nameI assume you’re specifically talking about customizing a BuddyPress template. If so, then you need to look in the BuddyPress profiles tables in MySQL.
For instance, the field definition for the “Full Name” field is stored in the wp_bp_xprofile_fields table and any corresponding datum is stored in the wp_bp_xprofile_data table.
With respect to this:
At the moment Buddypress/WP MU makes it very hard, perhaps impossible, to flexibly use member’s real names or other data (companyname, city) in the site or have something like ‘Hello John’ in email notifications.
That is not true. Any piece of stored data can be accessed and spit out in any number of ways. It just must first be in the database. Look in the bp-xprofile.php file and the bp-xprofile subdirectory for a number of functions that can be called to extract a user’s data.
By the way, I did see your other post about this topic and it was answered appropriately. With the default WPMU and BuddyPress setup, you will not be able to use a user’s full name until they’ve entered that data. They will not be able to enter their full name until after they register.
So, unless you hack the wp-signup.php or register.php files, and require that a full name be provided when registering, you will not be able to send them a welcome email with their full name since that piece of data does not yet exist.
All of what you are asking is possible but requires either a pre-existing plugin, a custom hack, or your ability in customizing and coding a BuddyPress template.
In reply to: get recent comments & avatarsI assume you’re using the Recent Comments widget. That is a WPMU widget and not specifically a BuddyPress Widget.
You have three options:
- Search the WordPress plugin repository to see if someone has created a plugin to do just that
- Search the forums on the WPMU site for an answer. If you don’t find one, then post a question.
- Hack WPMU’s widgets.php file yourself to provide the necessary functionality
In reply to: PHP-ErrorThere were some changes to the header.php file. Off the top of my head, I cannot remember if both the buddypress-home and buddypress-member themes had changes. Or, if only one of them had changes.
Either way, the best thing to do is open your header.php file and compare it to the new header.php file of the respective BuddyPress theme.
If I have the Blog-Menu in my theme – the bp_home_slug doest point to the right page (the home-blog) but to an article in another blog…
It should be BP_HOME_BLOG_SLUG, not BP_HOME_SLUG.
In reply to: How to install bleeding edge@Famous-
Once you’ve updated to the latest BP trunk following the instructions in Burt’s link, BuddyPress components live in /plugins/. You can keep all your other non-BP WPMU plugins in /mu-plugins/.
Tip: Make sure you read the entire thread Burt linked to at least twice before starting your upgrade. For detailed instructions on upgrading WPMU, visit the WPMU site.
Hum…
Well, as it is written in the example, the populate function gets called directly through the bp_example_tablename(), passing the contents of $id via $this->id.
There are some alternative examples of the populate function that do take arguments. In particular, look at populate() in bp-blogs-classes.php, bp-groups-classes.php, bp-messages-classes.php, and bp-xprofile-classes.php. In some of those files, there is more than one occurrence of the populate function. They exist in different classes.
Perhaps in the skeleton we should provide a commented out example of a populate function that takes arguments.
Ah, I see.
Okay, let me look at this and make the necessary changes. Since we did not change this code in v1.2, this bug was also in version 1.1 as well.
In reply to: Group bug in the latest version?Nightstalker101-
You cannot simply apply one Changeset and expect the entire BuddyPress package to work perfectly. Although that can work sometimes, you really need to apply all the previous Changesets up to that point.
Why, because since RC1 was released, there have been many bug fixes that additively could address your specific problem.
In reply to: Pagination functionRead this thread and see if the issue you’re experiencing is the same. If so, go to the bottom for the solution.

How do I find my old posts/quetions in this forum?
To locate your forum posts, go to the main forum page and look for the link at the top that says, “You can also view your started and replied topics.”
I do not even see a CSS selector named “content” in the link you provided in the OP when I view the source.
If you perform a search on BuddyPress for that specific string, it comes up empty. If you search WPMU, there are over 40 files (no surprise) that have that string. But, wp-signup.php is not one of them.
What exactly are you trying to do?
If I understand correctly what’s happening–or rather not happening–, you’ve created a Buddybar menu item that is not working / not showing up. Is that the issue?
Hooking into the Buddybar menu occurs by adding an add_action call within a given function in the bp-example file, not bp-example-class file. Of course, you need to be hooking into something. The class file is only for coding your database access.
Now, if you’re trying to create site admin menus in WPMU’s backend, then you do so in bp-example-admin.php. Look at the bp-xprofile-admin.php file for great examples of how this is done.
Or, maybe I’m misunderstanding the issue.
