@mercime: Is it really that simple?!? *Groan*
In reply to: Remove blog on group deleteIt’s probably still a good idea to open a ticket and request a new hook.
In reply to: bp-default theme options missing in 1.2.3?No, it’s just the simple theme options page that allows you to switch between blog and activity for your front page. Not too serious but missing none the less.
In reply to: Remove blog on group deleteI think you’re going to have to open a ticket to get a new hook added into groups_delete_groupmeta so you can process the meta info before it gets wiped out.
In reply to: Can I use buddypress for..Sorry, what I meant to say is if you already know how to create custom write screens, etc. for WP, then it’s the exact same thing for a site running BP.
If you don’t know how to create a non-backend custom write page then unfortunately, this isn’t really the place to ask as it’s not really a BP issue. However, you could look at the WP TDO miniform plugin as I believe it can do this sort of stuff.
In reply to: Can I use buddypress for..BP is just a plugin that provides the social interaction components. Everything still works like any other WordPress site.
In reply to: Show private group membersSort of but not easily. If you create a private group, non-group members can’t see who is in the group (by default).
If you code a suitable workaround then it shouldn’t be too difficult to put together some code to fetch the members list of a specific group and display their avatars, etc.
This is an interesting use though and I’d like to see any solution you manage to come up with.
In reply to: Recently Uploaded ImagesNot yet but it’s on the request list so hopefully they’ll include it soon.
In reply to: Can I use buddypress for..Yes.
In reply to: Profile Conditional TagYes, I think that you can use bp_is_X_component() where X is one of profile, activity, blogs, messages, friends, groups, settings.
Yeah, you’re going to have to do the locate_template option. If you really want your Forums (or whatever) to be the front/home page of your site, redirecting will not quite achieve that. It will basically remove your home page at http://example.com and replace it with http://example.com/forums/ so your site will get bookmarked and linked to as http://example.com/forums/ instead. There will be no “root” page.
Does that make sense? I’m not sure if it makes sense to me the way I’ve written it.
What do you mean by “all the WP pages”?
If you set the “Front Page” to be Activity Stream, it’s going to load the activity/index.php template when you are on the front page of your site.
Some days I’m a little slow. We already have an example of this in bp-default with the ability to select either the activity stream or blog posts as the front page. Unfortunately I’m not quite understanding the flow through the various hooks and filters right now. I think what you need to ultimately do is something like the following:
locate_template( array( 'groups/index.php' ), false );In bp-default, this is done (well, with activity/index.php) in a function that filters page_template.
This should be really simple and if you can crack the egg, it opens up the ability to set any page as the front page.
WTF? Are you getting any sort of PHP errors from that? Spitting out a header should work or cause PHP to barf it’s “can’t modify headers already sent” error.
Maybe toss a debugging echo in there to see if the function is even getting triggered on bp_init.
Need a comma in there before the 1.
You may need to bump the priority up:
add_action( 'bp_init', 'xe_redirect',1 );Maybe the redirect isn’t getting called soon enough and something else is sending the header already.
In reply to: My Blogs Menu not in admin bar@Jon Why are you using the version from SVN? Stick with the released versions unless you want to spend a *lot* of time tinkering. Bleeding means it’s, well, bleeding. Not ready for consumption.
In reply to: Idea: Auto Add New Members to GroupTalk to @DJPaul and see if he will add a forced join option then. I’m not sure why you’d want to do that though. Invites mean they have something in their inbox when they join and makes it a little more personal (IMHO).
In reply to: Can't Browse to Setting PagePut the following in your child theme’s functions.php file or in your main wp-config.php file:
define( 'BP_ENABLE_USERNAME_COMPATIBILITY_MODE', true );Spaces (and some other characters) aren’t allowed in usernames by default.
In reply to: Idea: Auto Add New Members to GroupCheck out the Welcome Pack plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/welcome-pack
It might be cleaner to use the current_user_can function to test. Check out the Roles info on the WP Codex, specifically the table (it makes it easy to see what roles apply):
https://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities#Capability_vs._Role_Table
To make it a little cleaner you could do the following:
function my_alter_bp_sidebar_login () {
if( current_user_can( 'edit_posts' ) ) {
printf( '<a href="%s" title="Dashboard">Dashboard</a>',(get_bloginfo( 'wpurl' ).'/wp-admin/') );
}
}This would show the link for any user who can “edit_posts” which is basically anyone other than Subscriber.
Take the background image out of your body tag. Works as expected after that is done.
In reply to: Gravatar redirect chains cause too much load timeThe Gravatar caching idea can be implemented via a plugin as far as I can see. I don’t think there is anything specifically required in the BP core that isn’t already available to use. Maybe I’ll take a stab at it.
As for debugging load times, you need to use tools like YSlow, Google Page Speed, or the built in page load timers in Firebug (Net) or Safari Developer Tools. These can help you visualize what is taking longer to load. There’s lots of information out there on how to improve page load times (in general, not specific for BP) but much of it requires moving away from some of the features we all like/want (like avatars, child themes, javascript/AJAX, etc.).
The other alternative is to pay big bucks for ultra high performance hosting with built in CDN, etc.
In reply to: Gravatar redirect chains cause too much load time@hnla: The Gravatar implementation is rather good considering what it’s trying to do. The unfortunate place where it breaks down is when you have a lot of users who haven’t registered with Gravatar and the default Mystery Man image is sent back numerous times with different URLs.
The biggest change I’d like to see in handling of Gravatars is for WP (or BP or whatever) to intelligently check if a user has a Gravatar. If the user doesn’t have one then save that info in their profile and server either a local default or user the Gravatar Mystery Man default that is generated the the unknown@gravatar.com address. This would result in a consistent URL that can be better cached by browsers for users who do not have a Gravatar.
To handle when users actually register a Gravatar, just check Gravatar every X times their avatar image is needed and if one is found, use it (and update their profile info in the DB to reflect this).
On a “normal” WP site where anyone can toss in their email address, this isn’t as useful but on a BP site where your users are registering, this makes a lot of sense (to me).
Is this with the default theme or with a custom child theme?
Providing a link to the site is always a good idea for stuff like this.
