    I’m going to close this topic and refer everyone to the External Blogs topic going forward.

    (Let me know if there are any objections?)

    Can’t answer to say if it will support this, but it wouldn’t hurt to add this in the trac as an enhancement. I see how this could be valuable.

    I think we’re saying the same thing in two different ways. :)

    Colors, yes. bbPress, yes. BuddyPress integration, No. ;)

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    They don’t. Not one that’s meant for BuddyPress anyhow.

    Remember this website, while orange, isn’t using BuddyPress. :)

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    No I understand, and I would certainly reshape my theme to match the orange one of BuddyPress also. Seamless integration is the goal.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Yes sir that’s exactly what I’m speaking of. The goal is to be able to control all ends of a process inside a component, and this will come with time.

    This means the scope from an administrative perspective, a preferential scope from an individual user perspective, and then of course a viewers perspective. Intertangle groups and friends into this mix, and what results is a very large array of conditionals that need to align to allow/disallow a specific process.

    What if I only want friends to view my contact info? And then also my feed? What if an admin wants to force that info to always be visible if you’re registered? So all users have all access and no one can block it? I think you get the idea…

    Burt, I’m listening, and I applaud your xmlrpc efforts. It haunts my dreams.

    How about using the Extended Profile fields, and just making a field called “External Blogs” and within that, have links to websites?

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Currently there is no “Default Blog Widgets” plugin, but I’ve thought long and hard about making one. :)

    Currently hard coding the sidebars is our only option to do this. It isn’t difficult, but it does involve some knowledge of HTML and WordPress/BuddyPress functions.

    There are however tons of articles in the WordPress codex on how to do this, as well as write ups from random WordPress enthusiasts all over the web that explain very well how to do this.

    The way I did it, was to copy the buddypress-home theme files into a new directory called buddypress-user. Edit the style.css file and rename the second theme to whatever you’d like. Delete home.php. Delete the sidebar code in functions.php. Go into sidebar.php and delete the widget function call. Still in sidebar.php, start editing and inserting your HTML and php functions.

    Goto Site Admin->Blogs and click Edit on your root blog for me.

    Under “Path” what do you have set there?

    Then under Blog options (wp_1_options) under “Siteurl” what do you have set there? And under “Home”?

    I noticed also that you haven’t edited your Member theme’s header.php file yet to match your home theme. Your member theme still wants to direct you to yourdomain.com/blog, instead of blog.yourdomain.com, which is weird because I see you have a subdomain installation in your WPMU.

    It feels like there’s a few different things going on, so lets check those settings first.

    Remember, http://community.beardownarizona.com is supposed to be the root of your blog, not the root of your BuddyPress install. The root of your BuddyPress install should just be http://beardownarizona.com. If you install BP in a subdomain, but also enable subdomains for your blog, you would need to have http://john.community.beardownarizona.com, if that makes sense?

    Rich is correct and thanks so much for stepping in.

    I trust Rich’s judgment since I haven’t personally used that plugin myself. I’ll gladly download it and see what I can come up with if you’d like to explore a different alternative.

    Let me know if you’d like marked as resolved or if we should dive deeper. :)

    Haha I used one of my three wishes to make it work, so I’ve got two left. Burt is my genie. :D

    First things first. You need to use WPMU 2.7, BuddyPress RC1, and bbPress 1.0alpha6. Any other combination will result in a giant stress headache on your behalf for at least a few days.

    To address part 1: When you say that you haven’t gotten the forums to work flawlessly, are you speaking of integration, or alone? Obviously the first thing we need to have is a fully functioning bbPress installation before we can attempt to integrate them together.

    To address part 2: That is bizarre. When you say closed, do you mean the topic is marked as closed, or that when you submit the post that it just refreshes the page immediately back to the main front page?

    The BuddyPress forums are currently running the most stable version of bbPress in the 0.9 branch. The alpha’s have gone through some growing pains in the past few months, mostly due to pressure to make integration work with the rapidly changing WordPress.org updates. bbPress and BuddyPress are both going to get some major super mega awesome momentum this year however, so the next few weeks are going to be pretty fun. :D

    bigkill,

    We’ll be able to get this working this evening, I have no doubt.

    I won’t have time to look at this until about 10pm USA Eastern time, so if you haven’t gotten it by then, I’ll be around to help out.

    The permissions plugin will be an integrated part of BuddyPress when version 1.1 comes around. As it stands today, it isn’t available to anyone but the developer(s). :D

    If I am understanding you correctly, profile groups and fields are used as pages of user editable information within their profiles, so you can have a group for “Personal” one for “Contact” one for “Pets” one for “Vehicle” etc… It’s part of the Extended Profiles plugin, and will also get a bit of a facelift for 1.1.

    If you need to set permissions right now today, unfortunately I don’t have a real great answer for you yet, other than kind of side stepping what you need until a built in option comes available.

    I’m essentially deleting the red, and adding the green in it’s place…right?

    That is correct. No need to apologize, it’s better to ask than start chopping into code and wonder why it’s broken. :)

    Felix, the kinks are that I have a few pages that need incorporating, and I’d like to find something better to do with the bbPress login, registration, and profile pages, like redirect them cleanly to the BuddyPress equivalent.

    You can check out where it’s at right now at my live test platform but do me a favor and don’t register unless you’re actually a Honda del Sol owner. ;)

    Note to self: Setup actual test platform soon. :D

    I think I would hook into the bp_core_signup_do_headers function.

    That should allow the processing of the re-captcha on each signup page load.

    @hempsworth, I think the scope of this plugin for right now is really just getting the initial sign-up/login functionality down. Creating a virtual link between facebook and BuddyPress, while a cool idea, is actually quite a task considering the complexity of fbl.

    After speaking with Andy last night, part of the problem comes from how Facebook locks down your profile if it’s set to be private (which I’m willing to bet a majority are these days.) If your profile is private, all you get is the facebook user_id, and that’s it.

    As far as having the feeds sync up, it would take an active facebook plugin to feed info to both places from both directions. It is a great idea though. I personally wish my Facebook would update my twitter and vice versa.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    dw, anything is certainly possible! ;)

    Right now, there is no built in “rank” structure, but it wouldn’t be too hard to build one. As it stands right now, the permissions plugin for BuddyPress is going to get a brief make over to accommodate some changes to WordPress MU. Once we have a look at how that is going to work, the best way to make user ranks without worrying about backwards compatibility will probably be fairly obvious.

    Kennibc, great work!

    I have a k-12 project I am using BP for as well, so welcome to the club!

    Wow that’s a fancy idea.

    Does each item need to be added manually, or are they imported from Amazon into your database?

    Since there are no admins for those items, technically who can edit them and create forums, etc? Basically just the main admin, correct?

    It’s ideas like this that make me love BuddyPress more everyday. Good work!

    I’ve often thought about this too, and I think it’s a good idea to submit as an enhancement in the trac. If you’re not familiar with how, I will be happy to do it for you. I’ve also thought that it would be nice to have the ajax highlight the currently selected letter.

    The alternative is just clicking the “Members” link again; it’s not all ajaxy, but it’s how I tend to clear the ajax filter.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Yes it can be done, and number 1 is your best bet.

    Things to remember:

    1. You’re going to want to create new Salt keys in your wp-config.php and bb-config.php files.

    2. You won’t have any access to your website until you get all of the domain references in the second database aimed at your second domain.

    The way that I did this was actually to get everything fully installed and synced together, and then dropping all of the tables in the DB and importing them from the original, and then tweaking as necessary.
