    :smacks head:

    I knew that Burt, I really did. :D

    wp-recapcha won’t have any idea how to hook into the BuddyPress registration page, you’ll have to tell it how.

    I haven’t used this plugin myself, but I’m sure that it only hooks into a normal WordPress registration page, and not the new BuddyPress one.

    I’m not the kind to give up, but I also know when I’m licked.

    Lets see if Burt or the others have any good ideas. I’ll call the cavalry. :)

    That is exactly what it is supposed to be, so we know it isn’t that.

    My next guess is it has to be a plugin conflict of some kind. I know you have a few of them installed, so it’s going to be a little bit of effort to track down, but all things we know to be true so far has me a little stumped myself. :/

    For some reason, all of your “Settings” are returning a 404 error.

    Is it possible that a plugin may have modified your .htaccess file, and it’s routing anything with “settings” in the URL someplace else?

    Do you mind posting your .htaccess contents here for me?

    If you are 100% positive the files are in the right places, the next thing to try is to systematically deactivate plugins one by one, and search for a conflict of some kind.

    Of course. Chances are you’re not the only one that could have this issue, so I appreciate you checking back in.

    Is it possible for you to create a test account on your site that I can try out?

    Provided that you don’t have any custom modifications in those files that you can’t get back, yes.

    I’ve found sometimes that my server doesn’t like to replace files, even when it says that it has, or that sometimes a batch upload just goes funky.

    Not saying this WILL fix it, but it does rule out that possibility.

    What version of BuddyPress are you using? It is also possible this could be a _nonce key issue if you’re not using RC1, or if you’re using a hybrid of files or file versions from partial upgrades.

    The files that this uses are actually part of the BuddyPress core plugin (in mu-plugins/bp-core/), so next on the list of things would be to totally delete the bp-core directory, and reupload them from the RC1 zip, to make sure they are all up to date and valid uploads that aren’t corrupted somehow.

    To answer your question, the file specifically that “Settings” uses is bp-core-settings.php. Permissions on the server should be the same as the others, set to 644.

    Burt (one of the other moderators here) and myself are both working on similar (but separate) projects, and I’m sure we’ll collaborate at one point to come up with a workable solution. Burt is much more knowledgeable on the backend subject of how these two speak to each other, so he’s the brains behind the operation. :)

    Mine requires “deep integration” and Burt’s bbGroups plugin to work as expected, and in my opinion it shouldn’t be any other way right now.

    To my knowledge there isn’t a bbPress/BuddyPress theme available for download yet, but it will be my pleasure to release mine once I have worked out all the kinks.

    No Todd, you’re actually right on point, and these are suggestions that have been mentioned before so you can bet that these will be addressed in future updates.

    I’m going to close this topic and route further discussion to the previous topic below.

    Thanks Jeffca for adding that to the trac.

    There’s actually a few little Easter eggs in the database that aren’t being used yet, but are planned for future use.

    My suggestion would be to wait until it’s time, but if you’re comfortable making some modifications that will end up being trumped by a future update, that sounds like one possible way to accomplish that.

    Lets try logging out, deleting ALL cookies for your website, logging in, and trying again. Could be that from changing permissions and things that there’s a cookie out of alignment somewhere. That’s the easiest thing to try first…

    About “Settings”, that is the area you can change your password in, set notifications, and delete your account in, but obviously you don’t want to delete your admin account.

    Lets try this in the same area…

    // Get the total number of friendships
    $total_friends = $wpdb->get_var( $wpdb->prepare( "SELECT count(id) FROM {". $bp->friends->table_name ."} WHERE (friend_user_id IN (". $filtered_friends .") AND initiator_user_id = %d) OR (initiator_user_id IN (". $filtered_friends .") AND friend_user_id = %d)", $user_id, $user_id ) );

    I should also ask if you’re using any custom or particular plugins or modifications to your website, even in your functions.php. Just trying to rule everything out if we can.

    If I was going to make this plugin, that is exactly how I would go about it. :)

    Riolec, I’m heading to bed at the moment (yes, I do sleep occasionally) but if no one has solved this with you by the time I make it back, I’ll continue where we are leaving off.

    I think I have an idea of what to try next, but I’d like to test it before I make you chase down any more code.

    Rob, this would definitely be possible through the use of a plug in, that you or someone would need to make of course.

    This could actually tie into many different types of social interactions, like karma, or user feedback, or post ratings resulting in a cumulative rating for that individual, which could then tie into a ranking system that gives that user expanded access to other areas of the site.

    The possibilities are endless really. :D

    I would recommend installing WPMU in the root directory, and modifying home.php in your buddypress-home theme to best match your existing site while still incorporating most of the typical, familiar BuddyPress links.

    To answer your questions, WPMU gets installed in the root directory, and BuddyPress is installed in the wp-content/mu-plugins/ directory. (Check codex.buddypress.org for install help.)

    The BuddyPress homepage is the home.php file I mentioned above. The files in your root directory are just functionary place holders to help tell WPMU/BuddyPress what content to get from the database and then to tell them which theme files to display that data with.

    I agree on all of these points and think they make for very logical next steps for the messaging platform. If I could add to this wishlist, I find that the drop down list of users sometimes isn’t real accurate, and I’m not sure if it looks for their login name, or fullname, or what.

    Like sometimes I’ll type a “v” and the name James will come up.

    Is the idea with composing an instant message to say that you should only message your friends or through a link from their profile?

    How comfortable are you editing a file to help me test?

    I have no way right now to validate if this is a fix for anything, but it hasn’t broken anything for me yet. :)

    open mu-plugins/bp-friends/bp-friends-classes.php

    Near line 157…

    ABOVE

    $filtered_friends = $wpdb->get_results( $sql, ARRAY_A );

    INSERT

    $filtered_fids = $wpdb->get_col($sql);

    Upload and replace. Try again and let me know what happens. Be prepared for it to break something, just in case. :)

    In the same file, same area, a better solution MIGHT be to…

    FIND

    $total_friends = $wpdb->get_var( $wpdb->prepare( "SELECT count(id) FROM {$bp->friends->table_name} WHERE (friend_user_id IN ($filtered_fids) AND initiator_user_id = %d) OR (initiator_user_id IN ($filtered_fids) AND friend_user_id = %d)", $user_id, $user_id ) );

    REPLACE WITH

    $total_friends = $wpdb->get_var( $wpdb->prepare( "SELECT count(id) FROM {$bp->friends->table_name} WHERE (friend_user_id IN ($filtered_friends) AND initiator_user_id = %d) OR (initiator_user_id IN ($filtered_friends) AND friend_user_id = %d)", $user_id, $user_id ) );

    Since $filtered_friends is an array, it seems to work that way also.

    Try both ways, let me know what results you achieve?

    No apologies necessary… :)

    What Andy meant was applying the background image to the html instead of the body, like so…

    Instead of…

    body {
    #EEEEEE url(images/bgbp.png) repeat-x scroll 0 0;
    }

    use…

    html {
    #EEEEEE url(images/bgbp.png) repeat-x scroll 0 0
    }

    If you’d like, you could actually just snip the code from the my-plugins/bp-core/bp-core-widgets.php file, and combine them both into one mega widget for yourself if you wanted to. :)

    Really, take this a step further to say that anything that is a plugin to BuddyPress could be a content type automatically, that could be turned on or off in the admin panel.

    Groups, Blogs, and Members so far. Later on the Gallery could be part of it, so when the gallery is dropped into mu-plugins, it automatically populates new content types. :)

    I think making this a following rather than a fanning helped this make sense to me.

    Burt, in theory this could be done quite easily with your Content tags idea. Make a tag called “Following” and make the tags aware of the kind of link it is, and spit out the feeds. :)

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Haha Thanks! Happy to help! :D

    I’ve also noticed that WordPress can be particular about the jquery version it’s using also. I’ve tried upgrading to the newer versions just to be on top of things, and it usually breaks something.
