    There is a plugin by Burt called Community Groups, and this will help you do what hempsworth is describing (and what you are requesting) quite easily. Do a search for some of the topics I’ve posted in recently, and you’ll find it somewhere in there.

    Otherwise you could just manually add each member of the group as a user/editor of the blog, which will provide you the same functionality but obviously be more tedious as members join and leave the group.

    I’m going to repost my BuddyPress on this page if no one minds…

    http://delsolownersclub.com

    It’s now a fully integrated BuddyPress/bbPress install, with a bbPress theme to match the Member Theme style layout that BP has become popular for.

    I invite any/all of you to join as well (maybe don’t create a blog if you don’t need one) if you’d like to check it out and give it a test drive.

    From what I can tell, it does work this way. I have users that can contribute to the main blog, and have created a blog, and it seems to work just fine and show all blogs that user can currently post to.

    If you’re using Burt’s community blog plugin, then it will not work this way, since the GROUP is applied as a whole, versus individual users.

    Quick suggestion, although I bet many people won’t run into this issue…

    function oci_get_userdata($u){
    $u = (int) $u;
    $user = bb_get_user($u);
    if ($user->bbGroups) {
    return stripslashes_deep((array)$user->bbGroups);
    } else {
    return stripslashes_deep((array)$user);
    }
    }

    Then, I changed…

    function oci_user_name($u){
    $bp_user = oci_get_userdata($u);
    if ($bp_user['fullname']) {
    return $bp_user['fullname'];
    } else {
    return $bp_user['display_name'];
    }
    }

    Basically, I integrated my forums before installing BuddyPress, so there are users that haven’t updated their BuddyPress profiles that won’t have fullname’s yet… This way I have all of their normal info to manipulate later and still get their original wordpress display_name to fallback on…

    There is probably a much prettier way of doing this, but this is the solution my tired brain could come up with for now.

    It is my experience that postname and category are broken for some reason in the permalink type. Not sure if this is a bug or not, but I can confirm that they alone do not work for me either. I have to include some kind of date in my URL or else the blog posts don’t show.

    Chad, welcome and don’t be scared; you’ve lurked long enough to know we don’t bite. :)

    I’m going to answer as best as I can in probably no particular order…

    In step 6, Trent is referring to the BuddyPress groups page.

    Checking cookie integration works fine, and as a matter of fact I’ve always checked it, because I know that not checking it on the bbPress side leads you down a different installation path. I think it basically makes me do the work twice, because checking the box makes you enter the salts and things that we’re already hard coding into the _config files. So, no worries there.

    If you check my profile and look at some of the posts I’ve started, I had similar problems and Burt was awesome enough to help me through some things, but chances are that the IXR just isn’t linking up somewhere…

    Let me see if I can find exactly how Burt suggested to debug this, but it worked really well and got me up and on my way in a few minutes, after a few hours of banging my head against it.

    Hate to say I told you so… :D

    Something in your .htaccess isn’t matching up with your fancy url’s… If you get them to point to the same place, things should fall into alignment.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    I can’t help but wonder if this is a .htaccess problem, because it really does seem like the files are where they should be, but for some reason your files don’t seem to think so…

    Modemlooper, if you’re using Firefox, install the Firebug and YSlow if you haven’t already… They’re great developer tools that you can use to see what your webpage is doing pretty much realtime as it’s processing things…

    I have a feeling that once we solve your js problems, we’re just going to go duh! Ha ha! Can you make sure there aren’t any .htaccess files anywhere but your root directory for WPMU? Like maybe you copied one over by accident? Also make sure if you’re using ANY caching, that you turn it off and delete any cache files you might have anywhere.

    Looks like I should be able to use “bp_get_field_data” to get the job done, lets see if I can get this to play nice. :D

    @johnjamesjacoby

    So in theory, if I write a function to filter into your oci_user_ function, say with an sql query to get the xprofile data I want to use in the forum, it will hit that function, run the query, add it to the bbGroups array, and that array gets saved to the user_meta for later access, correct? That way it isn’t always running my query everytime, but only if it doesn’t exist in bbGroups already… Am I on the right track?

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    Also in oci_bb_group_forums.php, I added…

    if (defined(BACKPRESS_PATH))
    require_once( BACKPRESS_PATH . '/class.ixr.php' );

    Does the same thing on the bbPress side…

    @johnjamesjacoby

    That makes sense. I’m actually using a modified version of your oci_bp_custom.php that you linked me to previously, and I think I have a good understanding of how they all work together.

    The problem is going to be getting the xprofile fields and data that I want to use, since there doesn’t seem to be a function that says “get all the users extended field data.”

    I guess what I’m running into is that the xprofile data doesn’t seem to be in a variable or a global anywhere, because it isn’t really considered meta. It’s kinda like how $bp doesn’t carry around all of the messages in your inbox on every page load, it also doesn’t carry around all the xprofile fields.

    Deep integration actually starts WPMU and BuddyPress before it ever touches bbPress, so all of the functions and variables and data I need and can access seem to be available within bbPress.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    Wow that’s cool… So if I understand correctly, the idea would be to add another function inside the oci_get_user_filter function that would get the xprofile info that I’m looking for? This way it exists within the bbGroups array for later access versus having to pull the query everytime?

    I get the feeling that getting the xprofile info might be harder than I thought.

    Also for the sake of those of us using deep integration, in oci_bp_group_forums.php if I could ask you to do…

    if (!defined(BBDB_NAME))
    require_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . '/class-IXR.php');

    That helps check to make sure that it isn’t previously included anywhere… Require_once doesn’t seem to really cut it with deep integration…

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    That will be super slick of you. I’ve tried scanning through some of the code, and to be honest the only way that I would know how to do it would be through making a new BP_XProfile_ProfileData object and getting the data that way, which I would rather not add a new query to every user on the page if I can help it.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    Burt, is there any way to add info to the bbGroups array from the extended profile area to be available inside bbPress? Or is there a different method to do this easily? I noticed that the extended profile data in the DB isn’t stored as simply as the user-meta table is, rather each entry associates itself with a corresponding value in another table.

    Say for example in the extended profile area, I want to have “aim, yahoo, google talk” fields, and I want each post in bbPress to have links to what each author entered in extended profile. Possible? :D

    I had a heck of a time converting my WordPress.org install DB over to WordPress MU, simply because my WP export/import only worked for about 10% of the data.

    I currently have a setup like you’re looking for, from delsolownersclub.com and delsolownersclub.com/blog. I think I did this my chance, because I made a few mistakes in my transition myself.

    So, yes it’s possible, and it actually shouldn’t be too difficult if you already have WPMU installed on your /blog directory. If you simply have WP.org there, then it’s a little bit of trial and error and DB dumping and editing.

    The other thing I ran into as an issue were the attachments and their directories, and the associations for those files in the database. Example, WP.org saves files in the root/uploads directory, but WPMU saves them in root/wp-content/blogs.dir. That meant dumping the whole database to a .txt file, searching and replacing /uploads with /wp-content/blogs.dir, and then importing the whole thing in phpMyAdmin.

    I did it that way for myself rather than running any weird SQL queries because my site could afford the downtime and because I didn’t want to miss anything, causing bad image links, etc…

    Does that make sense?

    I know you know this already Burt, but being from Wisconsin and currently living in Miami, and let me tell you that moving out of the Midwest and getting some culture is definitely a good thing. :)

    Did you guys notice…

    Warning: require_once(/home/content/t/w/i/twitterfic/html/bp-core-ajax-handler.php/wp-load.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: Not a directory in /home/content/t/w/i/twitterfic/html/bp-core-ajax-handler.php on line 3

    That file can’t exist, because bp-core-ajax-handler.php isn’t a directory. Is it possible that in all of your moving around and customizing of the locations, that you might have .htaccess’ed yourself into a corner?

    I think the idea is not to have BuddyPress permanently alter the WordPress related data. Right now, and please correct me if I’m wrong, but past of the design and development process of BuddyPress is that it can be added and removed without any changes done to the WPMU data structure, apart from conveniences like changing a password, etc…

    You can rename the “Full Name” in the BuddyPress to say “Nick Name” or “Display Name” or whatever you’d like, and then code your themes to use that info if you so choose…

    To be honest, from a developers standpoint, I like how it is right now, as it allows me to keep things separate. If you’d like to open up the ability to modify the fullname, then really BuddyPress should be able to modify ALL of the original WordPress user info exactly like the profile admin panel does, with website, info, firstname, lastname, etc…

    Will this code allow a user to be added to a blog as a contributor still, and will it allow creation of a blog if they are a contributor to one already? :)

    I’m also on my way to totally eliminating the bbPress profile at http://delsolownersclub.com. If only there was a “Favorites” function inside BuddyPress. Hmm… :)

    At this stage in development, there is no Forum widget unfortunately, and there may not be one based on the complexity of how it is put together.

    There is a pseudo-widget, that will allow for some recent topic and forum display layouts, but past that everything in terms of posting, replying, etc. must be done within bbPress itself, via some integration and theme duplication.
