In reply to: Theme and plugin requests
Group Site Permissions.
I think having a default hidden user group for registered users is a good idea. This way you could put *bad* members into a hidden *bozo* group and maybe restrict their abilities based on preset group permissions? Bozo’s can’t instant message or upload avatars, for example.
In reply to: Problem with short urlsI thought I had this particular issue with 1and1 actually at first also, but it turns out that even though they force me to have “www” in the front of the domain in the control panel, I am still able to override this through WP and .htaccess.
In reply to: BuddyPress on WP (Not the WP mu ?)Unfortunately not, at least right now.
What I consider the main reason for this, among the others, is that WPMU has a specific plugin directory devoted to “instant on” plugins, and BuddyPress relies on that specific ability within WPMU to activate itself and to load up all of the necessary files and functions.
You could, however, install WPMU and BuddyPress together, but then turn off the ability for users to make their own blogs. This will essentially make it operate like a WordPress.org install on the outside, with MU/BP’s sweet creamy insides.
In reply to: Change user blog theme to news blog themeOh no, I’m following you out the door and to the grocery store.
They are the same theme, hosted in the same directory. It is only the home.php file that is in the way.
Follow the exact steps above, and delete the home.php file from your new theme. I called mine buddypress-sub, for example. I renamed the theme in style.css, did exactly as I mentioned above, and tada.
In reply to: Change user blog theme to news blog themeSame rules apply as above except keep the BuddyPress Home theme active and deactivate all others.
Keep in mind that widget layout will never follow, meaning that each new blog will need to configure its own widgets.
I recommend copying all of the contents of BuddyPress Home to a new directory, modifying the style.css to a new name, comparing your existing WP header.php/footer.php files to the ones in your new directory, taking out all the WordPress specific PHP function references and replacing them WordPress MU/BuddyPress ones. Tedious, but effective.
I found that the main hurdle when doing this kind of migration (for me) was letting go of my old WordPress ways of doing things. I.E. no longer using the page widget as my main navigation menu, etc… Which you can still do if you want to, there’s nothing stopping you. The functions are still the same, but you’ll still want to use the BuddyPress home theme as your starting point, as it gives you the building blocks towards integrating your existing theme with the new platform.
In reply to: Group Forum IntegrationHaven’t forgotten, just couldn’t find the topic.
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=426
This topic is ultimately what helped me. I used his little $burt variable trick to help see if the two platforms were communicating in the back end, and it turned out they weren’t. This sounds like where you’re getting stuck as well.
In reply to: Community Blogs PluginBurt, not sure if you saw this or not, and while I don’t usually like to bump topics I’m anxious to see if this is possible.
In reply to: Change user blog theme to news blog theme1. Activate BuddyPress Home theme for main blog.
2. Site Admin -> Themes – Deactivate all themes including BuddyPress Home theme.
3. Site Admin -> Themes – Make sure News theme is enabled.
4. Find and activate the “New Blog Defaults” plug in. (Help ensure new blogs get the default theme you want.)
5. Configure “New Blog Defaults” and set default theme to your News one.
6. Create a new blog yourself, and you’ll be forced to use the only active theme, and cannot change to any other.
In reply to: Users unable to create blogsYes, this is possible.

Not sure if GoDaddy will allow multiple sub domains on a shared server however. Not that you said you were on a shared server, but that’s usually a safe assumption.
Trent, you’re correct as far as I can tell.
In reply to: Member Only ThemeThanks for this. Will be a good patch until the real privacy settings come about.
In reply to: Can’t upload avatarAnytime Ch… Burt.

Just trying to lighten the load if I can.
In reply to: Group Forum Topic delete problem. In reply to: Can’t upload avatarDon’t forget to mark this topic as resolved!
In reply to: Announcing BuddyPress Group Forums for bbPressDer… This might not pertain to you anyhow, as I forgot that it also involves the forum last poster bbPress plugin.
Diving deeper…
Looks like this is only happening on the Groups forums Burt. The hidden forum appears to get the correct last poster info no problem.
Still diving…
Yep, Nevermind! Not your problem!
In reply to: Can’t upload avatarJust keep using BP and report any bugs you find. That’s all I ask.
In reply to: Can’t upload avatarI just registered and uploaded an avatar just fine.
I do get this error when trying to view my own profile though…

Where yourdomain.tld is of course your domain, and you is of course you. That will get you to your friends’ activity.
I like your idea about wigetizing the profile/home page, but I think that’s probably a ways away yet. It would involve splitting the member theme up into two specific themes; a public theme, and a back-end theme. One for yourself, and one for others basically. Most of the code could be snipped from the existing blog wigets, but it would mean that all of the current member areas would need to be turned into widgets themselves, which would be no small undertaking.
In reply to: Announcing BuddyPress Group Forums for bbPressHey Burt… Something strange is happening… Could be I broke something, but I noticed it after I upgraded to .41 of your community blogs plug-in. It probably existed before hand, but I just noticed it now so it’s something to stay cognoscente of.
When looking at the front page of my forums, there are two (three for me) forum sections, public, group, and hidden. The most recent posts in my groups forums area link to the most recent posts in the public forums in the same position. Basically in the same order, but in the wrong forum. I think you’ll have to look at it to see what I mean.
Looks like maybe the $topics needs a separate loop or needs to be cleared? I haven’t dived into it yet, but I plan to shortly.
In reply to: Theme and plugin requestsBurt, I think I’m picking up what you’re putting down, and I plan on integrating much of what you’re mentioning. Trying to bring MU and bbPress underneath the BuddyPress umbrella a little more really, to open up some of the core abilities and release them to the integrated apps.
I wish I understood the ixr more, because I think the purpose of it is to not have to deeply integrate the components, but rather build bridge plugins to turn on only the functions we would need, much like you did with the bbGroups.
In reply to: How to create pages for groups?hempsworth, to be honest, this sounds more like a forum functionality than a blog to me. WordPress has never really had this type of straight forward user based permissions functionality, and while I can say that I think it sure could use it, I will also admit publically that I’m probably not the guy for the job. I think ideas like this should be added as feature requests to the trac, because they’re outside of the current 1.0 scope of BuddyPress, and would also involve some changes to WordPressMU.
Burt, I will take a gander. Also, you think possible to add an option to make the members of the group all editors? Could sort of have a blog/wiki that way.
In reply to: Sitewide forums, stop showing group forums…No need to have a separate install. Did you install Burt’s recent Group Forum plug in? I’ve got it active over at delsolownersclub.com/discussions if you’d like to see how it can be configured.
In reply to: How to create pages for groups?I guess I hadn’t put much thought to it, but the group forum icons don’t show up for guests, at least not for me they don’t. I haven’t looked at the code to see if this is intentional or simply being at the mercy of the core, but figured I’d mention it.
In reply to: Integrating Curently Active BlogsMost of the normal .org plugins will work in MU in exactly the same way. I have yet to find a plugin that I felt to be essential that didn’t.
If you back yourself into any corners come seek me out here and I’ll be around to try and help out.
In reply to: How to create pages for groups?Suppose it would help to have a site with some traffic to have tested that. Sorry Burt.
