In reply to: Customizing Buddypress Activity Wall
Just to add to Roger’s brilliant post above…
Don’t be afraid of Poedit.
It can look a bit intimidating at first but it really isn’t.
I’ve always edited language files directly in a text editor but I decided to give Poedit a whirl.
What caught me out was the fact that when I first opened it I was editing the actual strings and then exporting the PO & MO files.
This wasn’t doing anything because it was the wrong way to do it.
For every string there is a blank translation box beneath it, this is where you need to put your “translation”, then export, upload and boom, works a treat 😉
In reply to: New plugin: BuddyPress MuteThis is fantastic, works perfectly, thanks Henry 😉
In reply to: Changing avatar size?Ok found out how to pass a new class :
bp_member_avatar($args = 'class="mynewclass"');But still can’t work out how to set the size via the args?
In reply to: Changing avatar size?Ok just found this, I think this will achieve the same thing in a different way :
But I’d still like to be able to give the members page avatars a different class, so instead of it rendering img.avatar it would output img.ml_avatar for example.
Any ideas how to pass that new class arg here?
In reply to: "Friends Only" custom filter – codex incomplete?Hey guys,
Thanks for your replies.
Firstly, I am going to eat some humble pie. I didn’t realise that buddypress was entirely user driven and supported so apologies for jumping the gun there.
I promise that I will make it my mission to share anything I learn while using buddypress and offer help to others in the spirit of the project. It could certainly do with some basic “start up” guides, there are a few simple things that virtually everybody using this for the first time is going to want to do and they could be laid out in simple terms with easy to follow “how to” guides and I am more than happy to post a few of these once I am confident that I know what I’m doing is correct.
Thanks for the explanation and link Dan, that is most helpful.
I’m slowly starting to understand how everything ties together, and I’m sure I’ll have a million other questions along the way, but I’m also pretty confident that I’ll crack it and once I do I will be more than happy to contribute to the BP family wherever possible 😉
In reply to: Bump Activity to top PluginReading the plug-in faq this plug-in is never going to do what you want it to.
When a new comment is posted to an activity record - this plugin will copy the original date_recorded to the activity_meta table. The main activity date_recorded is then overwritten with the last activity comment reply date.Reading that, how they’ve made this plug-in work is by re-writing the original post’s date with the date of the latest comment, in effect changing the original post date.
It’s probably going to need a complete re-write to make it work the way you want it to. I’m very surprised that somebody else hasn’t released a plug-in like this though. Pretty standard functionality for a social network site.
In reply to: Merging all BP JS files into oneOnly thing i’ve noticed that is telling me that this could have been done better is that when the page first loads the text entry boxes are fully open, then animate to their “normal” state.
It’s probably just load order though, i’m sure it could be tweaked to work 100% as it should.
In reply to: Merging all BP JS files into oneOk managed to do it, it’s a dirty way but it works…
1) Compile all of the above scripts into a single file “mynewjsfile.js” then minify it to keep it even more compact if you want (forget the buddypress.js thing as what I’ve done stops the script from looking for it completely).
2) Upload mynewjsfile.js wherever you want to put it (for the sake of this I’ve put it into my theme root /js/mynewjsfile.js
3) Make a copy of buddypress-functions.php (inside bp-legacy/)
4) In your new buddypress-functions.php around line 89 comment out the following :
add_action( 'bp_enqueue_scripts', array( $this, 'enqueue_scripts' ) );Like this :
/* add_action( 'bp_enqueue_scripts', array( $this, 'enqueue_scripts' ) ); */5) Create a new folder called “buddypress” in your theme’s root and upload buddypress-functions.php into it. Now buddypress will use this file instead of the original.
6) In your wordpress functions.php add the following :
function mynewjsfile() { wp_enqueue_script( 'mynewjsfile', get_template_directory_uri() . '/js/mynewjsfile.js', 'jquery', false ); } add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', 'mynewjsfile' );The ‘jquery’ is there because our new script requires it to function properly. This ensures that Jquery loads before it. False is telling wordpress to load it in the header.
7) Enjoy your new single minified JS file 😉
In reply to: Merging all BP JS files into oneYes I did see it but I don’t know the names of the functions that are loading the scripts so I can dequeue them.
I tried dequeing ‘bp_enqueue_scripts’ but it didn’t remove anything.
I really wish one of the BP devs would just throw a basic editors roadmap together which clearly explains little things like this. I know probably 99% of the people using BP will never want to mess with things like this, but there are plenty of others like us out there that will only want to use BP as long as we can customise it to our requirements.
The way it all ties together is just so confusing.
I’ve wasted hours already just trying to find where simple things are located in the file structure before I’ve even managed to start editing and changing what I was looking for.
Oh well, onwards and upwards 😉
In reply to: Merging all BP JS files into oneThanks bro, had a look at that plug in but it hasn’t been updated since 2013 and isn’t compatible with my version of WordPress.
Sounds like a great plug-in though, if it works (haha).
Hope you get it fixed.
Still gonna try to do with without a plug-in though as i’ve done all the legwork manually already, just need to stop buddypress from enqueuing the original files (or at very least dequeue them in my functions.php). Just can’t find the functions in BP that are loading them originally.
If only the Apple Watch was an April fool too…
lol I actually didn’t even click the link when I wrote the reply, but afterwards I did and caught on. Pass me the dunce hat 😛
Brilliant thank you @danbp that’s exactly what I was looking for.
I know you were being sarcastic when you said “The light goes on when you click on ↑↑↑ Documentation ↑↑↑” but as I’ve explained in other threads on here, the way the codex is laid out is very confusing for a new user.
Maybe you guys that have all been working with this for years know your way around, but I spent ages trawling through the docs and couldn’t find that holy page you’ve just given me the link to.
Remember, I’ve only been using Buddypress for a couple of days. I didn’t even know what it was that I was looking for so how was I supposed to search for the term “Activity Loop”?
I’m sorry if the questions I’m asking are coming across as lazy but I assure you that is not the case. I just wanted somebody to point me in the right direction which you have just done, so thanks again.
In reply to: Template to change activity URL targetsSadly neither of those methods work in this environment.
In reply to: Template to change activity URL targetsThanks for the link, will give that whirl now!
Thanks for clearing that up @danbp
In reply to: new plugin: BuddyPress Simple EventsThanks @shanebp,
As soon as I’m happy that Buddypress is going to work for me i’ll be in touch 😉
Personally I wouldn’t put too much time and effort into the whole “smart watch” thing.
The whole concept is a terrible and impractical idea that’s been tried and failed before, and it will fail again.
Much better spending your time getting your BP site working great on mobile devices 😉
In reply to: Removing activity "replied" text from activity feedSorry, ignore the part about removing the URL, I understand why it’s required now, I’m still learning 😉
Would also like to be able to add a different class to the time text too.
In reply to: Page Not Found Permalinks IssueI think permalink settings are refreshed automatically when activating / deactivating any plug-in in WP.
Sometimes this doesn’t work properly and you have to do it manually, you’ve probably experienced that at some point?
I’d personally start by picking a dead time of night when there are unlikely to be any (or at least not many) users on the site and start by deactivating the following one by one :
Akismet All in One SEO Pack bbP private groups Contact Form 7 DP Pro Event Calendar Link LibraryIf I had to take a random shot in the dark guess on what is causing problems I’d put my money on Akismet & AIO SEO Pack. I very much doubt that these plug-ins are causing the issues by themselves, but one of the others is probably conflicting with them.
Disabling each of these in turn will at least give you a starting point to debug from if things start working again when they are deactivated.
In reply to: Activity page template? Thanks for the replies guys, but I want to do more than rename the page.
I want to see the template code that is constructing the page so I can get a better idea of how Buddypress works.
Any idea where this is located?
In reply to: Page Not Found Permalinks Issue@alice-kaye No need to run complicated SQL queries 😉
1) Click on the wp_options table
2) Click on Search at the top
3) Enter “permalink_structure” into the option_name value box
4) Click “Go”
5) You will see your permalink structure eg : /%postname/% in the option_value field
6) Click on it and put your new one in there or leave it blank for the WP default one.
7) Hit enter! Done!😉
In reply to: Page Not Found Permalinks IssueIn reply to: Page Not Found Permalinks Issue@alice-kaye Yes your are probably right, I had a look at the plug in and it doesn’t look like it’s doing anything that should conflict with BP.
I’m not sure how much you know about the WP databse so, just in case you need to start messing around in your db (for the permalink issue) :
1) I assume you’ll be using something like phpMyAdmin
2) The first thing you should do once you’re in your WP database is export a back up in case it all goes bananas.
3) Make sure you are in the actual database and not a table.
4) Hit the “Export” button in the top menu.
5) Make sure “Quick – display only the minimal options” is selected.
6) Click “Go” and save it to your computer. If you do end up messing something up you can rescue the entire thing by doing the following :
1) Top level again
2) Click “Import” (top menu)
3) Click “Browse” and locate your downloaded .sql file (It will be the name of your database, the same name you set in your WP Config file) with .sql on the end.
4) Make sure Format is set to SQL
5) Make sure “Do not use AUTO_INCREMENT for zero values” is checked
6) Hit “Go” and depending on the size of your db it should all be back as it was.Very good practice to back up your DB every now and again anyway.
I actually use a bash script to back up my db’s every week automatically and download them locally onto my home computer just in case I ever forget to do it. That way I have a nice archive of backups all dated so I can roll back the db to how it was on any of those dates if I have to 😉
In reply to: Activity page template?Ok i’ve just realised that you can select any page to be the Activity page.
Is this the only way of doing it or could the method above also work?
