@charlietech Have a look at the link @r-a-y added you’ll see the code you can add to your /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php file (if you don’t already have one and this is your first time adding custom code, just create the file through your FTP client)
`// disable the WP Toolbar and revert back to the BuddyBar
add_filter( ‘bp_use_wp_admin_bar’, ‘__return_false’ );`In reply to: Filter Profile Field Question?Something like this would do what you are looking for: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-profile-filters-for-buddypress/
I run it on a School Board site where students and teachers self identify what school they are from in a dropdown, and that link takes you to a member directory of all of the users who selected something similar.
If the options were small enough, you could probably create a custom menu for each item that would take people to the listing for each selection using the URL format: http://domain.com/members/?s=photographer.
In reply to: image beside username by user roleYou could do it manually with something like this: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-verified/. I’m not savvy enough to suggest how something like this could be built, but you might find that this is a good starting point.
In reply to: Pull post from Users activity streamsNot sure exactly what you mean here, but you might want to look at the Curator plugin here: http://wpebooks.com/curator/ to select posts from users blogs. I’m thinking you aren’t running a multisite install though, so another option would be somehow capture an RSS feed of your “favorites” and then feed them back to the blog. You would need to be very purposeful about your use of the Favorites button, but it seems that an RSS feed exists at domain.com/members/username/activity/favorites/feed (I haven’t tested this too deeply, but adding the word feed to the end of that URL opened up a listing of my favorites in a feed reader) that you could feed back into your blog with something like this https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/feedwordpress/ to create the combination. Alternatively you could use the RSS Widget to highlight favorite videos on the sidebar.
@djpaul was creating something “like” this in his BP Labs plugin. Here’s a link: http://byotos.com/2011/12/19/bp-labs-you-may-like-this/
Basically when you click on edit avatar, you are taken to A screen where you can make an avatar using the doppelme engine. It basically looks exactly like doppelme.com, on embedded into your community. Sorry it took so long for me to respond, this site doesn’t seem to be providing notification for mentions anymore.
In reply to: Allow users to join only one group?Depending on the size of your userbase, you could make all the groups Hidden, then use the Invite Anyone plugin to manually invite (or have established group admins manually invite) the users who belong in each separate group. Don’t get thrown by the first bullet in the description of the plugin, in this instance the power of this plugin will be in your ability to invite people to a group even if you aren’t friends with them (bullet 2 in the description on the link below). Perfect if you are using the Followers plugin as well and have Friend Connections turned off:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/invite-anyone/
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-followers/You need this plugin: http://etivite.com/wordpress-plugins/buddypress-restrict-group-creation/
In reply to: User Help file?Case in point, here is the very specific video I created for our BP install: http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=CO&hl=es-419&v=9vJ6AtP7DSI. I made this using Camtasia from techsmith.com, it’s a pretty simple process, but once you create it, you can’t make too many changes to theme or navigation (again supporting Paul’s point).
In reply to: Need help with themeUnder Buddypress / Pages, have you created all of the requisite pages for Activity, Groups, Members, etc.? I don’t understand “Everything was spread all throughout the page”. You’ll need that template pack enabled, and it needs to move some components into your active theme. Did you run through the 4 step process?
It’s a beautiful theme you’ve got going there, but I have honestly never had much luck converting a non-bp theme to be truly bp compatible without a lot of massaging. It’s not a plug and play process, hence the default theme. You may want to consider creating a child theme of the default: https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
The bb-config.php file is the only file necessary to create forums “the old way” using bb-press 1.x instead of the completely reconfigured 2.0. You’ll notice in the Buddypress / Forums menu there are two options: Forums for groups (that single bb-config file uploaded to the root of your site), and Site Wide Forums, which is the separate bb-press 2.x plugin you have enabled. Not sure if that’s your issue or not. All of that said, full compatibility between buddypress and bbpress isn’t expected until version 1.6.
You can download the bb-config-sample.php file from https://bbpress.org/download/legacy/ and then populate the necessary database information to enable the Group Forum capability, but with 1.6 so close (I think) you might be better off holding out.
In reply to: ‘Post Update’ button in Activity does not displayDoes it happen with the Default theme enabled? It could be a theme issue.
In the Buddypress Settings menu, do you have the “Disable BuddyPress to WordPress profile syncing?” set to “No”?
In reply to: Preventing members from leaving a group?Something like this might provide the lock you are looking for: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-mandatory-groups/
In reply to: [Resolved] Member links go to home page?Have you tried going into Settings/Permalinks and changing the setting there to something other than the Default. This can sometimes fix issues like this.
In reply to: Need help with themeDid you install the Buddypress Template Pack Plugin? If you are using a theme that doesn’t have buddypress functionality baked in by default, you need to install this plugin and run through the steps to enable compatibility. https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/
In reply to: Allowing Users to create profile pagesBy default everyone has a profile page within a Buddypress site under domain.com/members/username. You can edit the information that gets added to that profile in Buddypress/Profile Fields. If you want to centralize the community around the profile you can add something like this: http://buddydev.com/plugins/bp-redirect-to-profile/ which would redirect your users directly to their profile when they log in.
You could also allow them to customize the background of their profile with this if you really want to go wild: http://buddydev.com/buddypress/allow-your-users-to-change-their-profile-page-background-using-bp-custom-background-for-user-profile-plugin/ although that has the potential to get really ugly.
In reply to: [Resolved] Confused a little about WP and BP.I should also mention as a sidenote that I run a Buddypress/Wordpress Multisite install for 7000 users on IIS7 without issue.
In reply to: [Resolved] Confused a little about WP and BP.Re: Killing off the blog. Check out testbp.org: the main page is the blog portion of what is otherwise a buddypress community. You can have the blog front and centre like on that site, or let it play a supporting role as it does on this site (you’ll notice the blog cleverly titled “blog” in the menu above. When users post to the blog (posts or comments) that activity is recorded and noted on the activity stream.
Re: your directory: Check out this plugin, that creates a better directory than the default one, hence the title BP Better Directories: http://dev.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2011/11/09/new-buddypress-plugin-bp-better-directories/
In reply to: Cannot Access “Private” groupAre you the site admin? You should be able to access all levels of groups (public, private, hidden) without needed to be a member. Does it happen every time you create a private group, or just this specific group?
In reply to: Pull user updates to a single pageThis plugin does that: http://etivite.com/wordpress-plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/
In reply to: Buddy Press user sign up feature missingCheck under Settings/General and make sure that you have your Registration Settings set to allow anyone to register (checkbox). If this isn’t checked, then no one can create an account or sign up.
I commisioned the creation of a plugin integrating the Doppelme.com avatar creator into BP for a school community where I wanted to control the types of avatars that users create (and wanted to block local uploads of inappropriate pictures.)
It’s a thing of beautiful, but it’s also the developers first go at creating a WordPress plugin, so it isn’t in the repo. Here’s a screenshot. http://dev.commons.hwdsb.on.ca/files/2011/10/doppelme.png
The developer (Andrew Scott) was just talking the other day about figuring out how to get his plugin into the repo. I would email him if it’s something you think you might be interested in: info@doppelme.com
In reply to: hide public groups user is not a member of.buddydev.com has two nice plugins that might do the brunt of the work for you. http://buddydev.com/plugins/bp-redirect-to-profile/ will force your users to their own profile upon login, and http://buddydev.com/plugins/facebook-like-user-activity-stream-for-buddypress/ will feed them content from the groups they are members of and people they are friends with.
In reply to: Home on MenuA couple of things. The permalink issue you are seeing might be caused by you trashing the /home page but not Permanently Deleting it. Check under the Pages menu to make sure you have destroyed all evidence of the page.
While you are there, create a page, call it “home” if you like, or “Welcome to my Awesome Website”, and don’t worry about the permalink.
Now go to Settings, Reading, and you’ll find options for setting up which page you want to establish as your home page. Choose the “Welcome to my Awesome Website” page as the Static page you want as your front page. This will make that page the one that appears when users go to your main domain. This would be an actual homepage (no subdirectory), rather than something that lived at domain.com/home.
You can then optionally go in a customize the menu that appears in your theme (depending on the theme: the BP default theme supports menus) In the Appearance menu, go to Menus, then create a menu using the options on that page, that will allow you to customize what people see on the top of the page. If you go to testbp.org, you’ll see a good example of a customized menu with “child” pages that dropdown from the main titles. Note that in that case the “Home” page is the blog, with the newest update rising to the top.
